The Hermann Trophy is awarded annually by the Missouri Athletic Club to the United States's top male and female college soccer players.

History[link]

In 1967, Robert Hermann, the president of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the NPSL's successor, the North American Soccer League, established a trophy to annually recognize the top men's collegiate soccer player. The trophy, named the Hermann Trophy, has been awarded each year since 1967. In 1988, a second Hermann Trophy was inaugurated to recognize the top women's collegiate player of the year.

In 1986, the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) began naming an annual player of the year as a rival to the Hermann Trophy. Then in 1996, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) initiated its own annual player of the year award. These three competing awards began merging three years later when the NSCAA and MAC agreed to cooperate on naming a combined collegiate player of the year. Finally, beginning in 2002, the MAC/NSCAA and Hermann Trophy organization merged to create a unified trophy for the top college soccer player of the year.

The original Hermann Award Trophy is on display in the Hermann Atrium located in the McDonnell Athletic Center at MICDS in Ladue, Missouri. The original trophy was donated to the school by Mr. Hermann in 2003.

Selection process[link]

Today, the process of selecting a winner begins at the start of the college soccer season when a list of potential nominees is compiled by a nominating committee. Near the end of the collegiate regular season, 15 players whom the committee considers the best in Division I soccer are announced as semifinalists for the award. That list is then voted on through an online voting process by men's and women's Division I soccer coaches whose teams are current NSCAA College Services members. In early December the top three vote-getters for both the men's and women's trophy are announced as finalists for the award. These six individuals are invited to an annual banquet held at the Missouri Athletic Club of St. Louis. That evening, the winners of the two awards are announced and receive a 10 pound crystal replica soccer ball made by Tyrone Crystal of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Teresa Noyola Bayardo (born April 5, 1990), also nicknamed "T", is a Mexican-American soccer player from Palo Alto, California. She is a midfielder for the Stanford University women's soccer team and the Mexico women's national football team. Since the age of 2, when she watched her father play in an college alumni match in Mexico City, Noyola has been captivated by the game of soccer. She has played on the U.S Women's National Teams for years but recently made the decision that playing for Mexico's Women's National Team fits her style of gameplay better.^[2] It is not surprising that one of Noyola's role models is Marta, considering they are very similar in their footwork, how they see the game, and even their stature.^[3] Recently, on December 4, 2011, Noyola also helped Stanford to win their first Women's Soccer National Title by defeating Duke and scoring the only goal in the match to win 1-0.^[4]

Her father, Pedro Noyola and her mother, Barbara Bayardo went to Stanford University for their graduate-level education. Her mother earned a degree in education and now teaches Social Studies and English at a middle school in the Mountain View Whisman School District. Her father received a degree in applied math, economics, and engineering and is now a partner with a business firm. Her family moved to the Bay Area when Noyola was 3 years old.^[5] Teresa went to Palo Alto High School, also known as PALY, which is right across the street from Stanford University, where she has been playing for the last four years. Besides playing soccer, Noyola loves playing the drums and learning. In high school, she had a GPA over 4.0.^[6]

Noyola is currently a senior at Stanford University and is majoring in math and computational science. She has recently been named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also named the 2011 College Cup's Most Outstanding Offensive Player and is a finalist for the 2011 Hermann Trophy.^[7] If Noyola wins the award, she will be the third consecutive Stanford player to win. Kelley O'Hara won in 2009 and Christen Press won in 2010. The last school to have three straight winners was the University of North Carolina with Kristine Lilly in 1991, Mia Hamm in 1992 and 1993, and Tisha Venturini in 1994. For her senior year, Noyola had nine goals and 15 assists. She also scored the winning, and only goal against Duke in the national finals. During her four seasons playing for Stanford, she was a major component in helping get a 95-4-4 record, including 53-0-1 at home.^[8]

National Team Experience[link]

Teresa Noyola has been playing in the national team programs since the age of 14 and because her gameplay was more advanced than players her age, she was moved up to U-16s. She has played for the U.S. U-20s National Team at the age of 17 and was named the National Youth Club Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She was also named National Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She recently has made the transition from the United States National Team to the Mexican National Team, so she cannot play for the U.S. anymore. ^[9]

Early career in England[link]

Darvill attended Bexley Grammar School, Meopham Sports College, and was a member of the youth academy at Conference National side Ebbsfleet United as a teenager, scoring 82 goals in 95 games for the team's U18 side. He spent time playing on loan at Dorking in 2006,^[1] before breaking into the first team at Ebbsfleet United. In June, Darvill informed The Fleet that he had committed to a scholarship and would be moving to the United States to attend and play college soccer at Loyola University Maryland.

Darvill played four years at Loyola; he was named to the MAAC All-Rookie squad in his first year, was the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, and earned spots on the league First Team, the NSCAA/adidas All-North Atlantic Regional team and the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Year as a junior in 2008, and repeated as the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2009 while being named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list.^[2] He finished his college career having played 73 games for the Greyhounds, with 36 goals and 27 assists to his name.

Darvill turned professional in 2010 when he signed to play for the Real Maryland Monarchs in the USL Second Division.^[3] He made his professional debut on 17 April 2010 in the team's 2010 season opener against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.^[4]

Mike Tucker (born South Wales) is a special effects expert who worked for many years at the BBC Television Visual Effects Department, and now works as an Effects Supervisor for his own company, The Model Unit. He is also the author of a variety of spin-offs relating to the television series Doctor Who and novelisations based on episodes of the television series 'Merlin'. He sometimes co-writes with Robert Perry.

Effects work[link]

Tucker's early work for the BBC was as a holiday relief assistant on the 1982 history series Timewatch. Following this, he became a full time member of the BBC Visual Effects Department working on practical effects and models for a range of BBC programmes including Casualty, Top of the Pops, EastEnders, The Singing Detective, Proust and Tomorrow's World among many others. He was one of the principal effects crew for Red Dwarf series 1 - 7 and worked as an effects assistant on the final four series of the original Doctor Who. His association with Doctor Who continued long after the series was "rested" by the BBC, working on the Children in Need special Dimensions in Time.

He became a fully fledged effects supervisor in the early 1990s, handling the effects for shows including 'I Was a Rat', '999 International', 'Raging Planet' and 'Twister Week'. Starting to specialise in miniature effects he went on to handle model sequences for 'Egypt's Golden Empire', 'Disasters at Sea', 'Nelson's Island' 'Billy and the Fighter Boys', 'Hiroshima' and 'The Brighton Bomb'.

In 2005, Tucker became the first person to work on the original series of Doctor Who to work on the revived version starring Christopher Eccleston as model work supervisor, work which continues to the present day. Following the closure of the BBC effects department in 2001 he set up his own company 'The Model Unit' based at Ealing Studios and has since contributed miniature effects sequences for the Munich air disaster segment of BBC's 'Surviving Disaster' series, 'Krakatoa - The Last Days', also for the BBC, 'Moonshot' and 'Primeval' for ITV and 'Human Body - Pushing the Limits' and 'Clash of the Dinosaurs' for the Discovery Channel.

In May 2006, Tucker won a BAFTA Craft Award for his special effects work on the drama-documentary Hiroshima.

In July 2008 Tucker was part of the team nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Television Series for his work on the "Strength" episode of Discovery Channel's 'Human Body - Pushing the Limits'.

Writing work[link]

Tucker's first writing work was co-writing with Sophie Aldred the non-fiction book Ace! about the final season of the original Doctor Who. This was quickly followed by the short story Question Mark Pyjamas in the second volume of the Virgin Decalog anthology series: this was the first story that Tucker wrote with his longtime writing partner Robert Perry. This was followed by several stories for the BBC Short Trips anthology, again all co-written with Perry.

In October 1997, the first book in Tucker and Perry's self-styled Season 27 run was publish as part of BBC Books' Past Doctor Adventures series. The book, Illegal Alien, was rumoured to be based on a script which was in consideration for production had a twenty-seventh season of Doctor Who gone ahead. Tucker and Perry continued to write their Season 27 stories, with the novels Matrix (1998), Storm Harvest (1999), Prime Time (2000, written by Tucker alone) and Loving the Alien (2003).

The fourth book in the series, Prime Time, was Tucker's first novel written without Robert Perry, and instigated an arc that continued in Dale Smith's Heritage before ending in Loving the Alien, for which Perry returned. It sparked some small controversy amongst Doctor Who fans for stating that the Ace's last name was Gale: Ace's surname was never established on screen, but her creator Ian Briggs suggested that if one was needed then Gale should be used as he saw the character as a parallel to Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz. However, the Virgin New Adventures established after the end of the original series that Ace's last name was McShane, and Tucker's change was interpreted as an attempt to remove the New Adventures from the nebulous Doctor Who canon. Tucker, however, stated that the error was due to him not having known of the McShane last name, and later books have attempted to establish that Ace's full name is Dorothy Gale McShane.

Between writing his novels, Tucker also wrote for Big Finish Productions' audio adventures, writing the audios The Genocide Machine in 1999 and Dust Breeding in 2001. Dust Breeding featured the return of the Krill, a race of aliens created for Storm Harvest, and also Bev Tarrent, a character from his previous audio. Tucker has also written for Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield and Tomorrow People range of audios.

During this period, Mike also had a brief stint as a university academic, giving multiple lectures on science fiction and other topics. Later, in 2003, Tucker and Perry also wrote the novella Companion Piece for Telos Publishing Ltd.'s range of Doctor Who books, again for the Seventh Doctor but introducing a new companion, Catherine Broome.

More recent Doctor Who books are the Tenth Doctor novels The Nightmare of Black Island (his first published Doctor Who book not featuring the Seventh Doctor) and Snowglobe 7. He has also contributed comic strips to the magazines Doctor Who - Battles in Time and Doctor Who Adventures.

Away from Doctor Who he has recently novelised the 'Merlin' episodes 'Valiant', 'The Labyrinth of Gedref' and 'The Traitor Within' for Random House and co-authored (with Mat Irvine) the History of the BBC Visual Effects Department for Aurum Press.

Daniel Felix Hermann (born October 12, 1986 in Wuppertal) is a German ice dancer. He competes with his sister, Carolina Hermann. Together, the Hermanns are the 2009 German national champions and 2008 national bronze medalists.

Career[link]

The Hermanns began skating with each other in 1997.^[1] Since Daniel had to study one term abroad for his degree, they spent the summer of 2008 training in Vancouver under Victor Kraatz and Maikki Uotila-Kraatz.^[1]

The Hermanns missed the 2010-11 season due to injury and returned to the ice in March 2011, working with Rene Lohse in Berlin.^[2]
