Stefano Cagol, " W ", 2009, neon installation, MuHKA, Antwerp Curated by Ria Van Landeghem ERROR ONE een zwervend initiatief voor hedendaagse beeldende kunst a nomadic initiative for contemporary art Antwerpen "W" is a neon installation. The 4 (and more) phases of the light are characterized by a symbolic central W, the unique geometrically symmetric letter of the sequence. Exactly 40 years from when Bruce Nauman conceived his "Raw/War" neon (just realizing the mirrored video "Lip Sync" in 1969), "W" recalls the same palindrome word, but opening to new interpretations. There was the Vietnam War, but Nauman declared that the work was not specifically and politically connected with "this" war, preferring the language manipulation of the three letters of "war" illuminated from one side and then from the other side to write different words. "W" is not referred to a war in particular, too. We can read attribute and following noun as raw war: pure conflict, conflict (war) as basic (raw) element of living. Finally conflict is indivisibly part of our life. This means not only that after 40 years we have the same or even higher number of wars in the world, but that conflict is also in every moment: at work, driving our car, in every family and every community, both national and cultural in the art system. In fact the terms war and conflict mean etymologically confrontation, without a specific negative connotation. Stefano Cagol poses words in front of spectators and city passers-by, as slogans that he opens to wide and familiar, positive and negative meanings, without closing in an a priori interpretation.
