Generation (particle physics)

In particle physics, a generation (or family) is a division of the elementary particles. Between generations, particles differ by their (flavour) quantum number and mass, but their interactions are identical.

There are three generations according to the Standard Model of particle physics. Each generation is divided into two types of leptons and two types of quarks. The two leptons may be classified into one with electric charge −1 (electron-like) and one neutral (neutrino); the two quarks may be classified into one with charge −¹⁄₃ (down-type) and one with charge +²⁄₃ (up-type).

Overview

Each member of a higher generation has greater mass than the corresponding particle of the previous generation, with the possible exception of the neutrinos (whose small but non-zero masses have not been accurately determined). For example, the first-generation electron has a mass of only 6999511000000000000♠0.511 MeV/c², the second-generation muon has a mass of 7002106000000000000♠106 MeV/c², and the third-generation tau has a mass of 7003177700000000000♠1777 MeV/c² (almost twice as heavy as a proton). This mass hierarchy causes particles of higher generations to decay to the first generation, which explains why everyday matter (atoms) is made of particles from the first generation. Electrons surround a nucleus made of protons and neutrons, which contain up and down quarks. The second and third generations of charged particles do not occur in normal matter and are only seen in extremely high-energy environments such as cosmic rays or particle accelerators. The term generation was first introduced by Haim Harari in Les Houches Summer School, 1976.

Generations (South African TV series)

Generations is a South African soap opera which first premiered on SABC 1 in 1994. It was created and is produced by Mfundi Vundla and airs weekdays at 20h00 on SABC 1.

Set against the backdrop of the advertising industry, this drama celebrates the hopes and dreams of South Africans who aspire to a better future.

The show has received positive reviews throughout its run. Production of the series stopped on 11 August 2014 when 16 principal actors started withholding their services following wage disputes, a cut of R500 million in royalties and three-year extended contracts.

In August 2014, the cast of the popular United States CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory were also on strike. The cast managed to negotiate a 1 million dollar pay per episode for three years plus more back end money and production deals. The cast of the CBS sitcom had previously been earning R350 000 an episode. The cast of the popular NBC sitcom Friends also managed to negotiate a 1 Million pay per episode during their 10th and final season. So this says a lot about South Africa's television industry.

Family Π

Family Π is a group of New Testament manuscripts. Belonging to the Byzantine text-type, it is one of the textual families of this group. The name of the family, "Π" (pronounced in English as "pie"), is drawn from the symbol used for the Codex Petropolitanus. One of the most distinct of the Byzantine sub-groups, it is very old and the third largest. The oldest Byzantine manuscripts belong to this family.

Hermann von Soden designated this group by the symbol "K^a". According to him, its text is not purely Byzantine.

Codices and manuscripts

Soden included the following in this group of codices: Cyprius (K), Petropolitanus (Π), 72, 114, 116, 178, 265, 389, 1008, 1009, 1079, 1154, 1200, 1219, 1346, and 1398. Lake added to this group of manuscripts: 489, 537, 652, 775, 796, 904, 1478, 1500, 1546, 1561, 1781, 1816. Soden also associated Codex Alexandrinus with this group. Wisse lists about 150 witnesses of the family, but the majority of them belong to this family only in some parts of their text. The Peshitta, in the Gospels, represents this family.

Index set

In mathematics, an index set is a set whose members label (or index) members of another set. For instance, if the elements of a set A may be indexed or labeled by means of a set J, then J is an index set. The indexing consists of a surjective function from J onto A and the indexed collection is typically called an (indexed) family, often written as (A_j)_j∈J.

Other uses

In computational complexity theory and cryptography, an index set is a set for which there exists an algorithm I that can sample the set efficiently; i.e., on input 1ⁿ, I can efficiently select a poly(n)-bit long element from the set.

Family (Spanish band)
