He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1971 with a degree in English and finished coursework in 1974 for a Master in Mass Communications also at UNC but never wrote his thesis because his career took off.
In 1974, while in graduate school, he was chosen along with Don Tollefson in what ABC called a talent hunt. He became the oldest boxer to ever win a world title, when at age 46, he defeated Jean Pascal on May 21, 2011 by a unanimous decision, surpassing the record previously held by George Foreman.
Hopkins is also the former undisputed world middleweight champion, and the first fighter to retain all 4 world titles of each major boxing sanctioning body, plus The Ring belt, in the same fight. Having defended a world middleweight title a record 20 times, he is considered one of the greatest middleweight champions of all time. Born to Bernard Hopkins, Sr. and his wife Sue, Bernard grew up in the Raymond Rosen projects with his family. Hopkins turned to crime early in his life. By the age of thirteen he was mugging people and had been stabbed three times. At seventeen, Hopkins was sentenced to 18 years in Graterford Prison for nine felonies. After serving almost five years, Hopkins was released from prison in 1988. He then decided to use boxing as an escape from his previous life, and converted to Islam. While leaving the prison for the final time, the warden told Hopkins he'd "see [Hopkins] again when you wind up back here," to which Hopkins replied "I ain't ever coming back here."

Too Far
Hey I've gone too far
I can't live this down
Please turn back time
Please, God
This is all I have
I have nothing left
Please turn back time
Please, God
With my empty being
Set me at Your feet
Please turn back time
Please, God
Hey, whats going on?
I feel the darkness taking me
Circle the sin.
Inside there's nothing here.
Steal past the light,
and reconcile our lives.
Avenge us tonight.
Lift up our eyes.
Our dreams are not too dark
to hope for Heaven's door is not too far.
Lines on our hands
from working tired lands.
We toil and bless our time
to reconcile our lives.
Avenge us tonight.
Lift up our eyes.
Our dreams are not too dark
If we are the chosen ones,
than we must come undone.
It all seems...
Blanket round ?us speech,?
surround us in all to reach.
It all seems...
Distance from God we know
is self-induced by days let go.
It all seems...
Dark, dark. It all seems dark.
Way down the road,
we find love.
We find love.
Way down the road,
we find love.
We find love.
Lead us back towards home.
Teach us so we can roam.
It all seems...
Way down the road,
we find love.
We find love.
Way down the road,
we find love.
We find love.
Dark, dark. It all seems dark.
