W/S Presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan posing for pictures SCRIPT Participants of the "Caspian Five" discussed the legal status of the Caspian Sea and security issues in the region at the Caspian Summit in Astrakhan on Monday. The presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan signed a joint statement and adopted a final communiqué during the meeting. This included an agreement on the preservation and responsible use of water in the Caspian Sea, as well as a document on cooperation in hydrometeorology. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, they also made significant progress in the "preparations for the convention on the Caspian Sea legal status." The first Caspian summit was held in 2002 in Ashgabat, the second - after five years in Tehran, the third in 2010 in Baku. After the meeting in Astrakhan the next one will be held in Kazakhstan.
