VISITOR SERVICES ASSOCIATE

Chinati’s mission is to preserve artist Donald Judd’s vision, and includes making the museum collection available to the public, while maintaining the educational programs Judd initiated. The Visitor Services Associate’s primary function is to assist visitors in experiencing and learning about Chinati, specifically its permanent collection and exhibitions. S/he performs reception, retail, and administrative duties as described below. S/he also works closely with docent tour guides, museum guards, and education and development staff. The position reports to the Visitor Experience Coordinator.

Visitor Reception

S/he will be responsible for visitor reception and education at the front desk. This includes welcoming visitors to the museum; providing information about Chinati’s history, mission, permanent collection, and public programs; and receiving visitors for collection tours. Additionally, s/he will provide information about other attractions and amenities in Marfa and the surrounding areas.

Retail

S/he will perform retail duties, handling cash and credit transactions related to tours, bookstore sales, and museum memberships throughout the day. S/he is responsible for accurately reporting sales transactions daily to the accounting department as well as daily stocking and upkeep of the bookstore.

Administrative

Administrative duties include handling visitor and tour related phone and email correspondence, processing tour reservations, updating visitor brochures, accurate tracking of visitor data and surveys, assisting with scheduling of docents and exhibition guards, and implementing special arrangements related to private and group tours.

Further duties include following protocol related to conservation and museum security.

The ideal candidate works as a team with the Visitor Experience Coordinator, their fellow Visitor Services Associate(s), and docent tour guides to create the best possible experience for an increasingly diverse audience. S/he is extremely organized with a high attention to detail, is responsible and self-motivated, possesses exceptional energy, patience and customer service skills, and has professional verbal and written communication skills. It is essential that s/he thrive in a setting that demands working with the public on a daily basis. S/he has experience working in a museum or other non-profit arts institution. Conversational fluency in multiple languages, especially Spanish, is a plus.

This is a part-time, salaried position, 20 hours per week, with regular weekend hours. The successful candidate must be available to work during special museum events and holidays. Must have a valid driver’s license. Upon successful completion of a 90-day trial period, the employee will be offered a part-time position.

Education Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in museum studies, fine art, art history, design, or a related field.

Required skills

Has a strong knowledge of contemporary art and architecture

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office

Knowledge of POS systems and OvationTix, a plus

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, a plus

Press or marketing experience, a plus
