ROST -7.80% said Thursday its third-quarter profit rose to $171.6 million, or 80 cents a share, from $159.5 million, or 72 cents, a share, a year earlier. Sales rose 6% to $2.4 billion. The company forecast fourth-quarter profit of 97 cents to $1.01 a share in the fourth quarter. Third-quarter results matched the consensus estimate while fourth-quarter outlook fell short of an average estimate of $1.08 a share, according to FactSet. "We are up against our own challenging multi-year comparisons and an upcoming holiday season that we believe will be the most intensely competitive and promotional selling period in recent years," said Chief Executive Michael Balmuth.
