Evita is the 1996 film adaptation of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical of the same name based on the life of Eva Perón. It was directed by Alan Parker and written by Parker and Oliver Stone. It starred Madonna, Antonio Banderas, and Jonathan Pryce. The film was released on December 25, 1996 by Hollywood Pictures and Cinergi Pictures.
Evita traces the life of Eva Duarte (later Eva Duarte de Perón) (Madonna) from a child from the lower class to becoming the first lady and spiritual leader of Argentina.
Eva's death is announced in a movie theater and a public funeral is held in Buenos Aires. Che (Antonio Banderas), an everyman, narrates the story of Eva's rise to power and later illness and death, appearing in many different guises and serving as Eva's conscience and critic. As a young child, Eva attempts to attend her father's funeral in the town of Junín with her mother and siblings. Despite her father's wife and other family denying her family from entering, Eva pays her last respects to her father.
Tell me before I waltz out of your life
Before turning my back on the past
Forgive my impertinent behavior
But how long do you think this pantomime can last?
Tell me before I ride off in the sunset
There's one thing I never got clear
How can you claim you're our savior
When those who oppose you are stepped on,
Or cut up, or simply disappear?
Tell me before you get onto your bus
Before joining the forgotten brigade
How can one person like me, say,
Alter the time-honored way the game is played?
Tell me before you get onto your high horse
Just what you expect me to do
I don't care what the bourgeoisie say
I'm not in business for them
But to give all my descamisados
A magical moment or two
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government
Quite incidental
So what are my chances of honest advances?
I'd say low
Better to win by admitting my sin
Than to lose with a halo
Tell me before I seek worthier pastures
And thereby restore self-esteem
How can you be so short-sighted
To look never further than this week or next week
To have no impossible dream?
Allow me to help you slink off to the sidelines
And mark your adieu with three cheers
But first tell me who'd be delighted
If I said I'd take on the world's greatest problems
From war to pollution, no hope of solution
Even if I lived for one hundred years
There is evil, ever around
Fundamental system of government
Quite incidental
So go, if you're able, to somewhere unstable
And stay there
Whip up your hate in some tottering state
But not here, dear
Is that clear, dear?
Oh what I'd give for a hundred years
But the physical interferes
Every day more, O my Creator
What is the good of the strongest heart
In a body that's falling apart?
A serious flaw, I hope You know that
Eva: I don't expect my love affairs to last for long
Never fool myself that my dreams will come true
Being used to trouble I anticipate it
But all the same I hate it
Wouldn't you
So what happens now (another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now (take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to (you'll get by you always have before)
Where am I going to
Time and time again I've said that I don't care
That I'm immune to gloom that I'm hard through and through
But everytime it matters all my words desert me
So anyone can hurt me
And they do
So what happens now (another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now (take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to (you'll get by you always have before)
Where am I going to
Call in three months time and I'll be fine I know
Well maybe not that fine but I'll survive anyhow
I won't recall the names and places of each sad occasion
But that's no consolation
Here and now
So what happens now (another suitcase in another hall)
So what happens now (take your picture off another wall)
Where am I going to (you'll get by you always have before)
Where am I going to
Photographer: Don't ask anymore
I pressed my face across the window. It won't get any easier. I drown in my consideration. I am changing from within this corpse. Reality has been taken from me, seems like this happened just gone yesterday. I wave goodbye to a world I once knew I pressed my face against the glass, I embrace the end. I promise this won't get any easier. Now I drown in my consideration. This is mercy across your face. I am changing from within this corpse. Reality has been taken from me, seems like this happened just gone yesterday. I wave goodbye to a world I once knew.
For far too long I have bared this secret, I cannot bare these lies no more. I swear to you my love, your kingdom will fall. Everything you loved will be mine. Everything you fucking love will be mine. Your sacred throne will be mine. You were the crown of disgust. I won't pray for you today. I severed the head of your son, like a cattle to the butcher. Everyone has their price. Everyone has a price to pay. Like an ocean we'll rise again. We set sail.
Ask yourself would it really be worth it?
Is it fear you fear, or is it just the knife?
Are you capable of pulling the trigger,
Have you got it in you to end a life?
It takes a real man to walk away, just walk away, just walk away.
And maybe when you look back on this day,
You can finally call yourself a decent man,
Together we will discover a new tomorrow.
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me,
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me.
Time to find out what you're all about,
Is it fear you fear or is it just the knife?
Any simple man can pull the trigger,
Any simple man can end a life,
It takes a real man to walk away.
And maybe when you look back on this day,
You can finally call yourself a decent man,
Together we will discover a new tomorrow
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me,
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me.
DECENT MAN
Are you willing to wake up,
And finally call yourself a decent man?
Are you willing to wake up,
And finally call yourself a...
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me,
Do you need a little time to think for yourself?
Don't try to disguise this is greater than you and me.
You've got to ask yourself,
Would it really be worth it?
All hope is lost
Shattered in two,
I lay here a broken soul,
Waiting for this to be over
Will this ever change?
It seems we'll hold onto what we've forgotten,
I will not stand by and watch as innocence bleeds
All hope is lost
There is still hope left,
On this empty road,
It is up to us to fight,
For what we're owed
Even with the pain I still see through,
All the lies that stop the truth,
This kingdom was meant for us all,
Even with the pain I still see through,
All the lies that stop the truth,
This kingdom was meant for us all
There is still hope left,
Along this empty road,
It is up to us to fight,
For what we're owed
I'll hold on to this,
I'll hold on to this
Even with the pain I still see through,
All the lies that stop the truth,
This kingdom was meant for us all
Even with the pain I still see through,
All the lies that stop the truth,
This kingdom was meant for us all,
Even with the pain I still see through,
All the lies that stop the truth,
I guess it's up to me now, to figure this out for myself.
So this is how it feels to be stuck to the walls then wake up,
In the same old dream where there is no air for me to grasp.
Now show me the right path to take,
I guess it's up to me now, to figure this out for myself.
Time to get out of this routine,
Time for me to decide my own life.
I'll carry your words on my back,
And I won't notice the scars they leave behind.
There is a place that we call home,
Heaven is hatred, betrayal.
Someone please hold me in close,
So I can erase deants in my back.
I'll carry your words on my back,
And I won't notice the scars they leave behind.
Get me out of this place, I am no longer afraid of the arrogance.
Your words, just fall...
On deaf ears, I guess we all find out nothing is set in stone now,
Is that what you came to see?
Just watch it fall down in ruins.
And I'll...
I'll carry your words on my back,
I lay in the dusty sands
Of swords and the bloody hands
My fleshy tomb Cradle's me
This tyrant won't rest.
I lay in the dusty sands
Of swords and broken hands
My fleshy tomb Cradle's me
This tyrant.
This tyrant will never rest
This everlasting nightmare
Will never, end!
I will rest,
Tyrant will rest
And as I fold, my dreams fade away
(I have no dreams. I have no lies)
The darkness becomes my only escape
(Nightmare will end. Nightmare will end)
All that I've seen so far,
All the mistakes I've made,
Darkness claims me
I lay in the dusty sands
With the swords and the broken hands
My fleshy tomb will never Die.
This tyrant will never rest
This Devil's laugh's behind me.
Will never, end!
As We Perish!
As we perish, We forget
As We Perish!
And as I fold, my dreams fade away
(I have no dreams. I have no lies)
The darkness becomes my only escape
(Nightmare will end. Nightmare will end)
All that I've seen so far,
All the mistakes I've made,
Darkness claims me.
Tormenting me, 'til there's nothing left
Tormenting me, 'til there's nothing
As We Perish,
We Forget!
I step off the train
I'm walking down your street again
And pass your door
But you don't live there anymore
It's years since you've been there
Now you've disappeared somewhere
Like outer space
You've found some better place
And I miss you-
Like the deserts miss the rain
Could you be dead ?
You always were
Two steps ahead of everyone
We'd walk behind
While you would run
I look up at your house
And I can almost hear you
Shout down to me
Where I always used to be
And I miss you-
Like the deserts miss the rain
Back on the train
I ask
Why did I come again ?
Can I confess
I've been hanging'round
Your old address ?
And the years have proved
To offer nothing
Since you moved
You're long gone
But I can't move on
And I miss you-
Can you see me?
Can you even see me or have I faded into the background once again?
Do you even see me, 'cause every time I see you it seems the distance grows between us.
Can you feel me?
Or has my presence faded into the corners of my mind.
These false impressions that I seem to convey,
Without intention, they've already judged me.
How can we be so sure in the decisions we make,
When all we see is the world through the thoughts of others?
I have always seen you,
Through the decisions you make and the roads you walk down,
I have always felt you and the presence you have made,
Maybe one day you will realise this,
I no longer see the world through the thoughts of others
These false impressions that I seem to convey,
Without intention, they've already judged me.
They've already judged me.
Why can't they trust me?
How can we be so sure in the decisions we make
When all we see is the world through the thoughts of others?
I will not lie again you know what lies ahead, your face is covered in blood and sin your scars show no remorse. Remember what was left, discovered what was left. Oh.. what we left. That was what was left. Like me. You're taking it all away. These words they speak, these lines they break. I pay. Monroe faked it all. You can make your own destiny. As the light becomes what we need, we pay. Showing no evidence of what was left, Relief runs through your veins. You can make your own destiny. As the light becomes what we need. We pay this destined. Monroe faked it all. You faked it all. We pay on this destined day.

High flying, adored
So young, the instant queen
A rich, beautiful thing
Of all the talents
Across between
A fantasy of the bedroom
And a saint
You were just a backstreet girl
Hustling and fighting
Scratching and biting
High flying, adored
Did you believe
In your wildest moments
All this would be yours
That you'd become
The lady of them all?
Were there stars in your eyes
When you crawled in at night
From the bars, from the sidewalks
From the gutter-the-atrical?
Don't look down
It's a long, long way to fall
High flying, adored
What happens now?
Where do you go from here?
For someone on top of the world
The view is not exactly clear
A shame you did it all
At twentysix
There are no mysteries now
Nothing can thrill you
No one fulfill you
High flying, adored
I hope you come to terms with burden
So famous, so easily
So soon is not the wisest thing to be
You won't care if they love you
It's been done before
You'll despair if they hate you
You'll be drained of all energy
All the young who've made it
Would agree
High flying, adored
That's good to hear
But unimportant
My story's quite usual:
Local girl makes good
Weds famous man
I was slap in the right place
At the perfect time
Filled a gap - I was lucky
But one thing I say for me
No one else can fill it
Hello and goodbye, I just unemployed you
You can go back to school
You've had a good run, I'm sure he enjoyed you
Don't act sad or surprised, let's be friends, civilized
Come on little one, don't sit there like a dummy
The day you knew would arrive is here, you'll survive
So move, funny face
I like your conversation, you've a catchy turn of phrase
You're obviously going through some adolescent phase
So what happens now? So what happens now?
Where am I going to?
You'll get by, you always have before
I am broken,
Torn apart by misery,
I wait behind locked doors,
Hoping they will never find me,
I hear your voice through the cracks in the wall,
Bitterness now fills me,
My eyes are closed to reality,
Bitterness now fills me,
My eyes are closed to reality,
I'm sure I've been here once before,
I feel it's me against the world,
(Me against the world)
Will this ever cease to be?
This misery.
I'll walk you to the edge,
Just to see you fall,
Tides will come crashing but we still stand tall,
Bitterness now fills me,
My eyes are closed to reality,
I'm sure I've been here once before,
I feel it's me against the world,
(Me against the world)
Will this ever cease to be?
This misery.
I'm sure I've been here once before,
(Been here once before)
I feel it's me against the world,
Will this ever cease to be?
This misery.
I feel it's me against the world
I'll walk you to the edge,
These bloodstained hands will never come clean. They are my scars, they lie deeper than my flesh. They live in my memories, and I shall take them to my death bed. To my death bed. Tear out my eyes to see another day. Tear out my eyes to see beyond the rising sun. And let every tear I shed, be a part of the memory I have of you. With both thumbs I stub out the eyes, the eyes of yesterday. Grasping with both hands I begin to suffocate. And as her skin turned numb, I said good bye. She lays there cold but she is still breathing. I turn away and forget.
