Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652): Missa Christus resurgens
Allegri's Missa Christus Resurgens is based on his Easter Motet 'Christus resurgens ex mortuis' its concise and decaratory nature clearly marks it out as a product of a composer striving towards the Counter-reformation ideal of textual clarity. Like the motet on which it's based there's a lot of antiphonal writing particularly in the Gloria and some very telling use of dissonance in the wonderfully spacious Agnus Dei. Enjoy :-). markfromireland And if you're wondering why I'm not allowing comments it's because google's idiotic upgrade has prevented me from commenting on my own videos or responding to other peoples' comments Timings: Kyrie: 00:02 Gloria: 03:32 Credo: 08:37 Sanctus & Benedictus: 17:06 Agnus Dei: 20:16 Summary: Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652): Missa Christus resurgens ex mortuis Performers: The Choir of King's College, London, David Trendell (conductor). Gregorio Allegri 1582 1652 Missa In lectulo meo
Gregorio Allegri is known today for one piece of music - his setting of Psalm 51 Miserere mei deus. But, as the fact that he was elected maestro di capella of the Papal choir in 1650 and that his fellow musicians had elected him in 1640 to revise Palestrina's hymns (which was necessary because of Pope Urban VIII's revision of the texts), there was far more to him than that. He wouldn't have had those honours bestowed upon him if his contemporaries hadn't seen him as Palestrina's successor and a worthy composer in the the stile antico in his own right. His Missa in lectulo meo is a parody Mass in eight parts based upon a motet of the same name by Pierre Bonhomme (or Bonomi) a Flemish composer who was active in Rome before being granted livings in his native Liege by the Pope. It' a wonderful piece of music and one which, to my mind. goes a long way to explaining why Allegri's fellow musicians thought so much of him. In it he takes Bonhomme's motet as a starting point and builds something entirely new from it. This becomes clear very early on in the Mass when during the Kyrie he takes a melisma of Bonhomme's and uses it to create points of imitation - something he does repeatedly throughout the Mass. (His double Christe Eleison reminds me somewhat of De Lassus). Taken as a whole it's an opulent and lively piece full of inentive melodicism and with very effective use of dissonance. Enjoy :-) markfromireland Timings: Kyrie: 00:01 Gloria: 06:40 Credo: 11:51 Sanctus & Benedictus: 19:52 Agnus dei: 24:27 Summary: Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) Missa In lectulo meo Performers: The Choir of King's College, London, David Trendell (conductor). Gregorio Allegri (1582 1652): Missa Vidi turbam magnam
Allegri's six-part unaccompanied setting of the Mass 'Missa Vidi turbam magnam' (I saw a great multitude) shows how as well as being the leading exponent of the stile antico he was capable of composing using the more modern techniques of the seconda practica. This performance includes the plainchant introit and gradual. Text, translations, and timings are all below. Amen. RepeatStatuit ei Dominus... The Lord made to him a covenant of peace, and made him a prince: that the dignity of priesthood should be to him for ever. (Ps. 131: 1) O Lord, remember David: and all his meekness. v. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Graduale: Exaltent eum in ecclesia plebis: et in cathedra seniorum laudent eum. V. Confiteantur Domino misericordiae ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum. Allelúja, allelúja. (Matth. 16: 18) Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram ædificábo Ecclésiam meam. Allelúja. Let them exalt Him in the church of the people: and praise Him in the chair of the ancients. V. Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to Him: and His wonderful works to the children of men. Alleluia, alleluia. (Matth. 16: 18) Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church. Alleluia. (Ps. 44: 17, 18) Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth: they shall remember Thy name through-out all generations. Alleluia.
