Oscar has just arrived in Montreal with his son Jose en route to a small city in Quebec to introduce the boy to his mother. They miss their bus and are stranded for the night in this unfamiliar city. Later, when Jose is fast asleep, restless Oscar decides to get some air. This is where he meets Diane, looking for her lost dog. They walk side by side through the night streets of Montreal. But are they really looking for a dog? Where will the twists and turns of their stroll lead them? Does Diane's husband Vincent, set out on a search for his wife, have reasons to worry? After wandering all night like tortured souls, and meeting a bunch of special characters, among whom the homeless Barack Obama himself, these three scoundrels find themselves together at the bus station in the wee hours of the morning along with dumbfounded Jose. With the help of the cold light of the rising day, all accounts can finally be settled. This film is an ode to Montreal told as an urban symphony, creating characters of the night and the city unto themselves. Oscar and Diane, both played by three actors of different ethnic backgrounds, take turns pulling us into this breathtaking tale that reveals the colorful charm of the melting-pot city of Montreal to anyone willing to look.

As she spends the night avoiding her ex, and the other undesirable guys in attendance, she interacts with a colorful assortment of party peeps. Between disappearing fortune tellers and over crowded jacuzzis, she questions if real love is even possible. The irony; the only person she's the least bit attracted to, is the homeless man!

During a joint interview that aired Sunday, Obama and Clinton chuckled as they described their partnership and stoked speculation that Obama may prefer Clinton to succeed him in the White House after the 2016 elections. Clinton is leaving Obama's Cabinet soon, and speculation about the former first lady and senator has only grown more intense after a heated appearance last week on Capitol Hill. Both Obama and Clinton batted away questions about future campaigns, but the joint interview -- the president's first with anyone other than first lady Michelle Obama -- was only likely to increase the fascination with Clinton's future. "The president and I care deeply about what's going to happen for our country in the future," Clinton said. "And I don't think, you know, either he or I can make predictions about what's going to happen tomorrow or the next year."

(NBC) President Barack Obama, in his first appearance since big Republican gains in the midterm election, said Wednesday that Americans sent a clear message: “They want us to get the job done.” “All of us have to give more Americans a reason to feel like the ground is stable beneath them,” Obama told reporters from the East Room of the White House. He made a point of addressing not just voters but the two-thirds of the electorate that stayed home. “They expect the people they elect to work as hard as they do,” he said. “They expect us to focus on their ambitions and not ours.” Obama singled out job creation, rebuilding infrastructure and boosting American exports as potential points of agreement when the next Congress takes over in January. He said he looked forward to welcoming leaders of both parties and both congressional chambers to the White House on Friday. Even before the new Congress is seated, the president said, he plans to ask for more money to fight Ebola, seek a new authorization for military force against ISIS militants and try to get a budget passed. “It’s time for us to take care of business,” he said. “There are things this country has to do that can’t wait until two years from now or another four years from now.” He also again called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, and raised the prospect of taking some action on immigration on his own by the end of the year — a step that is certain to anger some Republicans. He declined to provide details. He said he was open to changes in his signature health care law but said he would not support eliminating its mandate that people buy insurance coverage. The Republicans gained at least seven Senate seats on Tuesday. They will hold at least 52 in the next Senate and as many as 54, depending on the outcomes of undecided races in Alaska and Louisiana. In the House, Republicans will hold their largest majority in at least 65 years. “There’s no doubt that Republicans had a good night,” he said. He avoided a similar characterization to what he called big losses in the 2010 midterms — a “shellacking.” Just before Obama spoke, Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the incoming majority leader, held his own press conference and said that Americans are clearly frustrated with dysfunction in Washington. The Senate, McConnell said, “basically doesn’t do anything. We don’t even vote.” Obama suggested he’d enjoy sharing a Kentucky bourbon with McConnell. The president struck a similar tone about gridlock, saying he had a unique responsibility “to make this town work.” “The American people overwhelmingly believe that this town doesn’t work well and that it is not attentive to their needs,” he said. “And, as president, they rightly hold me accountable to do more to make it work properly. I’m the guy who is elected by everybody, not just a particular state or a particular district.”

Asia trip tests Obama's postelection global clout

With President Obama's influence at home fading, he is looking abroad to China, the opening stop of a three-country trip that will test his ability to play a commanding global role during his final two years in office. Once Obama was treated like a superstar on the world stage. But the president will arrive in Beijing on Monday under far different conditions, with his most powerful days behind him. At home, Republicans are still rejoicing at having pummeled Obama's party in the midterm elections, relegating Democrats to the minority in both chambers of Congress. His counterparts in Asia surely have noticed. The trip also marks one of Obama's final chances to deliver on his goal to amplify America's influence in Asia and the Pacific. In China, Myanmar and Australia, leaders may render a judgment on whether Obama's lofty ambitions in the region have been sidetracked by crises in Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. "This is going to be a tough trip for the president," said Ernest Bower, an Asia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. He said Asian leaders were viewing Obama's visit with this question in mind: Who is the president after the midterm elections? "They'll be trying to discern whether he has the commitment and political capital to follow through," Bower said. Even before the election, Obama's commitment to the region and his ability to boost U S clout there was in doubt in many capitals. U S allies such as Japan and South Korea have pressed for a greater American presence, partly to counter China's growing influence. Yet Obama's mission against the Islamic State group and his government's Ebola response have diverted U S military and financial resources elsewhere. "The president remains deeply committed to his Asia rebalancing strategy, and its implementation will remain a top priority throughout the second term," said his national security adviser, Susan Rice. During his three days in China, Obama planned to give a speech about U S ties to Asia at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and meet with President Xi Jinping. U S presidents often immerse themselves in foreign affairs during their last years in office, when the focus on the next presidential race saps the energy from their domestic efforts. After last week's elections, White House officials spoke optimistically about Obama's prospects for clinching trade deals in Asia and elsewhere now that Republicans are set to control Congress. Under Obama, U S trade negotiators for years have been pursuing the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a major trade pact being negotiated with 11 nations. The talks repeatedly have blown past their deadlines, and other nations have been wary about Obama's ability to push a deal through Congress, where Democrats are sensitive to the concerns of labor unions. But with Republicans in charge, Obama's prospects may have increased , so the argument goes. Republicans tend to support trade deals as a way to boost the U S economy, and GOP leaders have spoken positively about giving Obama the power to submit a final deal to an up-or-down vote, preventing last-minute amendments that could sink it. China is not part of the talks, and is pursuing its own free trade deals in the region. What's more, Chinese leaders have viewed Obama's focus on Asia with suspicion, fearing an attempt to contain China's growth and influence in the region. In a sign of the political climate facing Obama in China, state-run media have been mocking him in the days before his visit. President Obama, in nominating New York federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch on Saturday to be the country’s next attorney general, called her the most qualified public servant for the job. However Lynch will still face a difficult confirmation process in Congress. Republicans have already told the White House that pushing any nominee through Congress while Democrats still have control of the Senate will be difficult and politically damaging. Republicans want to oversee Lynch's confirmation in the next Congress, after taking control Tuesday of the upper chamber. If confirmed, Lynch will become the first African-American woman in the job, succeeding Eric Holder, who was the first African-American head of the Justice Department. “I couldn’t be more proud to nominate Loretta Lynch as our next attorney general,” Obama said during a brief White House ceremony. “I can think of no better public servant to be the next attorney general. ” The president cited Lynch’s successful efforts as U S attorney for eastern New York in prosecuting terrorists, mobsters and Democratic and Republican public officials. “It’s pretty hard to be more qualified for the job than Loretta,” Obama said. Lynch, 55, is a Harvard Law School graduate and popular prosecutor who is currently serving her second stint as the U S attorney for eastern New York, which covers Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. “No one gets to this place , this room, this podium this moment , by themselves,” Lynch said Saturday in thanking the president, Holder, her New York colleagues, family and others. “I will wake up every morning with the protection of the American people my first thought,” said Lynch, who must be confirmed by the Senate to get the job. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which holds the confirmation hearings, has already indicated that he is unhappy that Obama is making the nomination now, instead of during the new session, when Republicans will have the majority in both chambers. “Democrat senators who just lost their seats shouldn't confirm (a) new attorney general,” he tweeted on Friday, after news surfaced that Lynch would officially be nominated Saturday. “(They) should be vetted by (the) new Congress. ” Still, Holder express confidence on Saturday for Lynch and that she would be confirmed. “Loretta Lynch is an extraordinarily talented attorney, a dedicated public servant, and a leader of considerable experience and consummate skill,” he said. “I am certain that she will be an outstanding attorney general, and I am delighted to join President Obama in congratulating her on this prestigious appointment. ” Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, earlier expressed "every confidence that Ms. Lynch will receive a very fair, but thorough, vetting by the Judiciary Committee. " "U S attorneys are rarely elevated directly to this position, so I look forward to learning more about her, how she will interact with Congress, and how she proposes to lead the department," Grassley said. "I'm hopeful that her tenure, if confirmed, will restore confidence in the attorney general as a politically independent voice for the American people. " Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. , who presumably will become the majority leader in the next session, issued a statement Friday night urging the Senate to wait until January to vote on the nomination. "Ms. Lynch will receive fair consideration by the Senate," he said. "And her nomination should be considered in the new Congress through regular order. Obama Urges FCC to Seize Sweeping New Internet Powers to Save Net Neutrality

President Obama leapt directly into the net neutrality fight Monday, urging the Federal Communications Commission to claim expansive new powers over the Internet to enact the "strongest possible" regulations. "'Net neutrality' has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation — but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted," Obama said in a video posted on the White House website. "We cannot allow Internet service providers (ISPs) to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas." Under his plan, the FCC would classify broadband Internet as a "telecommunications service" under Title II of the Telecommunications Act, a provision the agency already uses to regulate telephone companies. His statement is a huge win for Internet activists, who have been warning the future of the Internet could be at stake unless the FCC invokes stronger authority to prevent abuses by Internet providers. But broadband providers like Comcast and Verizon have been lobbying fiercely against applying the provision to the Internet, warning it would strangle their industry with utility-style regulations. Shares of major broadband providers sank early Monday following the announcement. Verizon issued a statement saying it supports an "open Internet," but warned that Obama's plan would face "strong legal challenges." "The Internet has not just appeared by accident or gift -- it has been built by companies like ours investing and building networks and infrastructure," Comcast executive David Cohen said in a statement. "The policy the White House is encouraging would jeopardize this engine for job creation and investment as well as the innovation cycle that the Internet has generated." It's also a confrontational move against congressional Republicans, who just won control of the Senate last week. They consider Title II an archaic provision designed for a time when a single monopoly controlled all telephone service. They warn that using the provision on the Internet would destory jobs and mean slower Internet for everyone. The new GOP Congress will be sure to try to repeal any net neutrality rules the FCC enacts. Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, tweeted Monday that net neutrality is the the "Obamacare of the Internet" and that the "Internet should not operate at the speed of government." But Democrats, including Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Anna Eshoo, praised Obama's statement and urged the FCC to enact the stronger rules. In his statement, Obama noted that the FCC is an independent agency and that the ultimate decision will be up to Chairman Tom Wheeler and the four other commissioners. But his statement puts tremendous pressure on the Democratic appointees to seize the controversial new powers. Wheeler thanked Obama for his input Monday, but didn't explicitly say he would follow the president's directions. The various net neutrality proposals raise "substantive legal questions," Wheeler said, and he'll need more time to develop rules that can hold up in court. The FCC chief had previously said he wanted new rules on the books by the end of the year. Under Obama's plan, the FCC would ban Internet providers from blocking websites, throttling Internet service, or creating any special Internet "fast lanes" for websites that pay more. The rules would apply equally to a home Internet connection and mobile devices. He also said the FCC should consider applying regulations to the interconnection points on the backend of the Internet, which would help Netflix and other companies deliver large video files without having to pay Internet providers for better connections. Traditionally, net neutrality has only covered how Internet providers must handle traffic once its on their networks.

President Obama's vow to press ahead with executive action on immigration may already be poisoning the well, as House Speaker John Boehner warned last week. The president, in a TV interview aired Sunday, repeated his pledge to sidestep Congress to change U.S. immigration law. "I'm going to do what I need to do," Obama told CBS' "Face the Nation." Amid expectations that Obama will act before the end of the year – and before Republicans take the Senate majority in January – the debate has swiftly complicated other top agenda items. Over the weekend, GOP lawmakers linked their immigration concerns to Obama’s nomination of federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch to replace Attorney General Eric Holder. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, aside from wanting the Senate to wait until the Republican-led Senate is seated to take up the nomination, put out a statement urging Lynch to declare whether she supports the president’s use of executive action. “The Attorney General is the President's chief law enforcement officer. As such, the nominee must demonstrate full and complete commitment to the law,” they said. “Loretta Lynch deserves the opportunity to demonstrate those qualities, beginning with a statement whether or not she believes the President’s executive amnesty plans are constitutional and legal.” On another front, conservatives want to use the lame-duck session’s budget debate to strip funding for any executive action One of the major priorities of the lame-duck session is to pass a spending bill to keep the government running beyond Dec. 11. National Review reports that Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., is circulating a letter building support for language that would “prohibit funding for the President’s reported intentions to create work permits and green cards for undocumented immigrants currently in the United States.” Salmon reportedly wrote: “President Obama has spoken publicly and privately about his intentions to use executive action to create these work permits for those who are here illegally. This would be in direct violation of U.S. law. As you know, the Congress has the power of the purse and should use it as a tool to prevent the President from implementing policies that are contrary to our laws and the desire of the American people.” Some analysts had expected Republicans to eventually use the appropriations process to combat Obama’s immigration action. But their leverage is limited until the party takes the majority in the Senate next year. Until then, any stand-off between the GOP-led House and Democrat-led Senate over immigration in the budget process runs the risk of another partial government shutdown, which congressional leaders have little appetite for. Still, the immigration action push threatens to spoil any bipartisan spirit going into the next Congress. Boehner warned as much in a press conference last week. The immigration push reportedly led to some tension even at the White House. The Associated Press reported last week that during the meeting between Obama and bipartisan congressional leaders on Friday, a source claimed Obama cut Vice President Biden off when he asked Boehner how long Republicans would need on an immigration bill (though other sources disputed that characterization to Fox News). Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” said the move would “hurt cooperation on every issue.” “I think it would be like the president pulling the pin out of a hand grenade and throwing it in as we are trying to actually work together,” he said. “I am hoping that cooler heads at the White House can prevail."

On Monday, President Barack Obama came out in favor of the "strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality," endorsing a popular proposal that would empower the Federal Communications Commission to require Internet service providers to treat all web traffic equally and not charge content providers for better access. "We cannot allow Internet service providers to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas," Obama said in a statement. The FCC is currently weighing whether ISPs, such as Verizon and Comcast, can choose to block or prioritize delivering traffic to certain websites. The consideration comes in the wake of a federal appeals court ruling in January that struck down the rules that barred companies from doing so. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the FCC was considering a "hybrid" compromise that would empower ISPs to make deals with companies to allow for faster content delivery, while still allowing for oversight. Obama's plan provides for more regulation than that. He's backing a proposal that would reclassify ISPs as common carriers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act, treating the service as a public utility. Under that section, it's illegal "to make any unjust or unreasonable discrimination in charges, practices, classifications, regulations, facilities, or services." Obama is also asking for a ban on paid prioritization, a practice that allows companies to put service in the "slow lane" if a content provider doesn't pay a fee. "If a consumer requests access to a website or service, and the content is legal, your ISP should not be permitted to block it," Obama's statement said. "Nor should ISPs be able to intentionally slow down some content or speed up others ... based on the type of service or your ISP's preferences." Obama's plan won't be popular with telecom companies, but it has wide support from the U.S. public, which submitted to the FCC almost 4 million comments overwhelmingly in favor of net neutrality this summer. Whether FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will adopt Obama's plan remains in question. On Monday morning, a group of protesters showed up at Wheeler's house to advocate for net neutrality. They wielded a banner reading, "Save the Internet," which Wheeler initially helped them hold. "This is not a photo-op for you to pretend like you're saving the Internet," one protester said.
