Plot
Dr. Stephen Sorenson plans to tap the geothermal energy of the Earth's interior by means of a thermonuclear device detonated deep within the earth. Despite dire warnings by fellow scientist Ted Rampion, Dr. Sorenson proceeds with the experiment after secretly learning that he is terminally ill. This experiment causes a crack to form and grow within the Earth's crust, which threatens to split the Earth in two if it is not stopped in time.

We must hear Dr. Rampion complete his report. You were saying that the crack is extending to the east.::Dr. Ted Rampion: Along the Macedo Trench. It's following a geological flaw in the Earth's crust, known as the Macedo Fault. That runs from here, to the tip of India, then veers across towards Indonesia, and terminates off the Australian continental shelf.::Sir Charles Eggerston: How do you know the crack will stop there?::Dr. Ted Rampion: We don't.::Sir Charles Eggerston: What if the crack keeps going? Right around the world? What happens then?::Dr. Ted Rampion: Where the land masses split, the oceans will be sucked in, and the colossal pressure generated by the steam will rip the Earth apart, and destroy it.::Indian Ambassador: You mean, the world will come to an end?::Dr. Ted Rampion: The world as we know it, yes.
Dr. Ted Rampion: Suppose the Macedo Trench splits open under the ocean? A crack a thousand miles long, bringing superheated magma in contact with the ocean: earthquakes, tidal waves, mass destruction on an apocalyptic scale!

The crack is moving twice as fast as before.

Rowing the Atlantic Ocean: Sea Fever
An attempt to give some of the flavours of the ocean and try to explain what motivates me to relish challenges such as rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.
"Expeditions are about pitting yourself against nature. This project has frustrated me because much of the struggle has instead been within ourselves (nausea, hunger, exhaustion) and our immediate environment (seats designed during the Spanish Inquisition). Last night though I experienced the addictive sensation I have enjoyed so often on hills and mountains, deserts and rivers. That is the outpouring of “a kind of glory that lights up the mind of a man” and which comes with surviving and thriving in the world’s wild places and relishing the variety, the beauty and the ferocity of nature..."

John Masefield (1878-1967) was England's Poet Laureate for 37 years. This now quite famous poem is often misquoted in several ways. The two more obvious misquotes are "I must go down" for his "I must down" and in the same line "to the sea again" for "to the seas again." While "I must go down to the sea again," fits our mind more comfortable, he actually wrote "I must down to the seas again."
A video for classroom use. The poem text is in the public domain in the USA, as it was first published before 1923. The videos were taken in West End, Long Branch, NJ.

John Edward Masefield, OM, (1 June 1878 – 12 May 1967) was an English poet and writer, and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 until his death in 1967. He is remembered as the author of the classic children's novels The Midnight Folk and The Box of Delights, and poems, including "The Everlasting Mercy" and "Sea-Fever".
Masefield was born in Ledbury in Herefordshire, to Caroline and George Masefield, a solicitor. His mother died giving birth to his sister when Masefield was only six, and he went to live with his aunt. His father died soon after following a mental breakdown. After an unhappy education at the King's School in Warwick (now known as Warwick School), where he was a boarder between 1888 and 1891, he left to board the HMS Conway, both to train for a life at sea, and to break his addiction to reading, of which his aunt thought little. He spent several years aboard this ship and found that he could spend much of his time reading and writing. It was aboard the Conway that Masefield's love for story-telling grew. While on the ship, he listened to the stories told about sea lore. He continued to read, and felt that he was to become a writer and story teller himself.
