Cisco CEO John Chambers received $16.5 million dollars in compensation for the company’s latest fiscal year, a decline of 22 percent from the previous year. The company didn’t meet revenue and operating income targets for the year that ended in July, and Chambers’s performance-based compensation was reduced accordingly. The world’s largest maker of networking equipment had $47.1 billion dollars in sales in fiscal 2014, falling short of the company’s target of $49.5 billion. Operating income was $13.4 billion, just short of the $14 billion dollar target. Chambers saw his base salary kept the same at $1.1 million. His stock awards declined to $12.9 million in fiscal 2014 from $15.2 million in the prior year, and his non-equity incentive compensation fell to $2.5 million from $4.7 million, according to the filing. Cisco’s revenue fell 3 percent in the latest fiscal year, the first decline in five years.

Markets were punished today as the Dow Jones lost 238 points, the S&P; 500 dropped 26 and the NASDAQ tumbled 71. The Russell 2000 continued its recent capitulation closing down 16 points and Canada’s main index finished 155 points weaker. The VIX moved 2 and a half percent higher, while defensive buying in the bond market had the yield on the 10 year higher by 10 basis points to finish at 2.39%. Energy prices continued lower as both WTI and Brent fell 8 tenths of a percent while gold bounced about 4 tenths of a percent. European markets were sold down over the course of the trading day to finish lower by 1%. Asian markets were mixed with the Nikkei lower by 91 points, the ASX 200 higher by 41, while markets were closed in Hong Kong. In foreign exchange markets the US Dollar was weaker against the Canadian Dollar and Japanese Yen but stronger against the Euro, British Pound and Aussie Dollar.

It's that time of year again! The past two years I've been uploading a 'music' video featuring clips of my past railfanning year. Since I live in the desert, the cooler temperatures that come with October breathe new life into my railfanning, so just as corporations have a 'fiscal year', I have a 'railfanning year' from Oct-Sept. The first half of this year in particular saw many amazing locomotive consists develop, a departure from the relatively boring past 5 years. Observers said the awareness of the law is low and law enforcement sectors aren't serious about fining or taking legal action against those violating the traffic rules STORY: The fatality rate from road accidents has sparked rising concerns across society that the government needs to come up with stronger and concrete measures to deal with the problem. Vientiane Traffic Police Department unveiled a report recently, saying that despite the number of road accidents and fatalities declining in the capital over the past year, the figure remained unacceptably high. According to the report, over 1,470 road accidents took place in Vientiane in the 12 months to September 30 with 175 deaths (of which 38 were women and six were foreigners). The number of road accidents in 2013-14 was 48 less than the previous year and the number of deaths was 27 less than 2012-2013. Meanwhile the number of injuries for the whole year was recorded at 2,173 and the vehicles damaged from the accidents reported at 2,896, but the report did not include the total cost of damage from the road accidents. It seems that Vientiane roads have become more and more dangerous as many people drive their vehicles carelessly without respecting the traffic regulations which results in many people dying each year. Police attributed the main cause of the overall rising number of road accidents and fatalities to drink driving, failure to comply with traffic regulations and speeding. On average, 80 percent of road accidents involve people aged 15 to 44. Observers said the enforcement of traffic regulations is very weak in Laos with many people drinking and driving illegally. The awareness of the law is low and law enforcement sectors aren't serious about fining or taking legal action against those violating the traffic rules.

The Haltom City Council members approved their fiscal year 2015 budget and property tax rate unanimously. According to my understanding, the budget increased spending by 6.76 percent, primarily to accommodate an employee compensation program. The property tax rate was effectively increased 4.7 percent over last year, although the rate itself remained unchanged at $0.6999 for every $100 in assessed property value. An inquiry Friday afternoon to confirm these figures was not returned by the end of the business day.
