As World War II raged in May of 1942, three years before the publication of what has since become his best-known novel, Brideshead Revisited, English author Evelyn Waugh was in fact a newly-assigned member of the British Army’s Royal Horse Guards, a cavalry regiment then stationed in south-west Scotland to which he had recently been transferred. Back home, in dire need of some light relief, his wife of 5 years, Laura, was steadfastly holding fort whilst just weeks away from giving birth to their fourth child, Margaret. Entertainment soon arrived, in the form of a letter from her husband in which he expertly and with pitch-perfect comic timing told the story of a tree stump on the Earl of Glasgow’s estate.
Geoffrey Palmer OBE is an English actor known for his roles in British television sitcoms playing Jimmy Anderson in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Ben Parkinson in Butterflies and Lionel Hardcastle in As Time Goes By opposite Judi Dench for over a decade. His distinctive voice also gave him a career in advertising and television voiceovers, and as the narrator for the BBC series Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Holidays. Geoffrey Palmer narrated audiobooks and he regularly voices books for the blind.

Geoffrey Palmer (actor)
Geoffrey Dyson Palmer, OBE (born 4 June 1927) is an English actor known for his roles in British television sitcoms playing Jimmy Anderson in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Ben Parkinson in Butterflies and Lionel Hardcastle in As Time Goes By.
Career
After being demobilised from the Royal Marines, Palmer drifted into theatre, joining a local amateur dramatics society because of a girlfriend. He became an assistant stage manager at the Q Theatre, by Kew Bridge, then the Grand Theatre in Croydon. He spent several years touring with a repertory company, and was an actor in theatre, coming to television and public prominence later in his career. Early television appearances included a variety of roles in Granada Television's The Army Game, two episodes of The Baron and as a property agent in Cathy Come Home.
Getting a major break in John Osborne's West of Suez at the Royal Court with Ralph Richardson, he then acted in major productions at the Royal Court and for the National Theatre Company and was directed by Laurence Olivier in J. B. Priestley's Eden End. Palmer found the play so boring, however, that it put him off a stage career for good. Many of his television parts were as a stuffy, middle class buffoon, with a stiff upper lip, and he is known for deadpan drollery. Two sitcom roles brought him major attention in the 1970s: the hapless brother-in-law of Reggie Perrin in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976–79), and the phlegmatic Ben Parkinson in Carla Lane's Butterflies (1978–83). He has continued to appear in productions written by Perrin creator David Nobbs, the latest being the radio comedy The Maltby Collection.

As World War II raged in May of 1942, three years before the publication of what has since become his best-known novel, Brideshead Revisited, English author Evelyn Waugh was in fact a newly-assigned member of the British Army’s Royal Horse Guards, a cavalry regiment then stationed in south-west Scotland to which he had recently been transferred. Back home, in dire need of some light relief, his wife of 5 years, Laura, was steadfastly holding fort whilst just weeks away from giving birth to their fourth child, Margaret. Entertainment soon arrived, in the form of a letter from her husband in which he expertly and with pitch-perfect comic timing told the story of a tree stump on the Earl of Glasgow’s estate.

Prosecuting Counsel, played by Vernon Dobtcheff, appeared in "The War Games" and Jacqueline Hill (as the wife of the accused) was Barbara Wright, one of the first companions to William Hartnell's Doctor. Director Richard Martin also worked on early Doctor Who adventures.
Tony Caunter was also in Doctor Who in "Colony in Space" but will be probably be best known as Roy in EastEnders, as was Lizzie Power (Defence Counsel) who played Arthur Fowler's romantic interest, Christine.

A Fish Called Wanda was scripted by star John Cleese.

Michael Palin, Cleese's former Monty Python cohort, plays a stuttering mob flunkey who continually messes up his one big assignment: killing a little old lady (it isn't that he has any qualms about knocking off the old dear; it's just that her pet dogs keep getting in the way). Shaggy Dog Story is a charity programme for Children in Need, put together by the BBC in 1999 as a sequel to the previous year's Future Generations video (featuring children's programmes), and the great success of 1997's "Perfect Day" charity single. It was first shown on December 27, 1999. Shaggy Dog Story was dedicated to the BBC's comedy output. It featured various comedians and comic actors (some in character, others as themselves) telling a long-winded shaggy dog story, beginning off with Ronnie Corbett in his trademark armchair, who is most famously known for telling such stories on The Two Ronnies. Shaggy Dog Story is a charity programme for Children in Need, put together by the BBC in 1999 as a sequel to the previous year's Future Generations video (featuring children's programmes), and the great success of 1997's "Perfect Day" charity single. It was first shown on December 27, 1999.
Shaggy Dog Story was dedicated to the BBC's comedy output. It featured various comedians and comic actors (some in character, others as themselves) telling a long-winded shaggy dog story, beginning off with Ronnie Corbett in his trademark armchair, who is most famously known for telling such stories on The Two Ronnies. The story featured a cricket captain who hired a horse for his team, who ends up as a good player but can't run.
A second, shorter story, entitled "Mammals vs. Insects", was also broadcast on 4 January 2000. This story revolved around a football match between the two teams of creatures and featured many of the participants from the other story.

Her role in this was to set the tone for the rest of the Carry On films. "...For once the costumes were made for me, rather than my having to resort to some old dress that had been used before and had to have a new panel sewn in the back to accommodate my girth - which by now was unvaryingly plump."
Sims' characters evolved from objects of desire in the early films to frumpy, nagging wives in the later ones, epitomised by the Emily Bung role in Carry on Screaming. Following the success of Carry On Cleo she stayed with the films all the way though to the final one in the original series, Carry On Emmannuelle, appearing in 24 Carry On films in all; she did not return for the one-off revival film, Carry On Columbus. She also appeared alongside Kenneth Williams in the radio show Stop Messing About in 1969-70.
After the Carry On series ended in 1978, Sims continued to work on television. She appeared opposite Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier in the award-winning 1975 television film Love Among the Ruins and had a recurring role as Gran in the BBC comedy series Till Death Us Do Part. From 1979 until 1981 she played the recurring character Mrs Bloomsbury-Barton in Worzel Gummidge for Southern Television. During 1986 and 1987, Sims starred as Annie Begley alongside Angela Thorne in the Yorkshire Television sitcom Farrington of the F.O.. Sims suffered from Bell's palsy in 1999 and fractured her hip in 2000 but recovered well. However, her alcoholism was beginning to dominate life in her rented Kensington flat, and she described herself as "the queen of puddings." After assessment by a doctor, she was offered a place in a rehabilitation centre, but she decided to take control of her life. Offered the opportunity to write her autobiography, she took a role in the BBC television film The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, alongside Dame Judi Dench and Olympia Dukakis.

Here's the first episode of series one of the brilliant comedy "Fairly Secret Army" starring the brilliant Geoffrey Palmer it was broadcast in 1984 in the early days of Channel 4,strangely this excellent series which despite getting poor press reviews at the time lasted for a second series,but has never been repeated or released on vhs or dvd video. I seem to be the only one who recorded it at the time for my collection. Mid way through this you will see a short interlude sequence which I have shortened for this upload which channel 4 used at the time to fill up for a lack of advertising.Amazingly channel 4 in an age when their were only 4 TV channels in the UK was unable to find sufficient advertisers to fill its advertising slots,but they soon remedied the situation as advertisers woke u...

This inevitably leads to all sorts of complications, and a fine cast of British character actors are on hand to support the fun, including Basil Radford & Naunton Wayne in their final screen appearance together. Watch closely and you will also spot Arthur Lowe in a small bit part, his third appearance on screen. "Stop press girl" has been virtually unseen in the UK since its original release, having never been shown on UK tv or given a release on VHS or dvd. This idea first emerged in an episode of Perrin when Jimmy confided the plan to Reggie (who rubbished it) and was based on persistent though unsubstantiated rumours in the 1970s press that right wing generals were secretly planning a coup to rescue Britain from union militancy. The character's name was changed due to Fairly Secret Army being broadcast on Channel 4, and the television rights to The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and its characters being held by the BBC.
The first series was script edited by John Cleese, whose training films company was responsible for the series. The series did not have a laughter track.[1] Nobbs only started work on the show when he turned down an offer to write a spin-off sitcom for Manuel of Fawlty Towers.

"Stop press girl" is a farcical comedy about a young girl (Sally Ann Howes) who has the ability to stop any kind of machinery by an act of will. This inevitably leads to all sorts of complications, and a fine cast of British character actors are on hand to support the fun, including Basil Radford & Naunton Wayne in their final screen appearance together. Watch closely and you will also spot Arthur Lowe in a small bit part, his third appearance on screen. "Stop press girl" has been virtually unseen in the UK since its original release, having never been shown on UK tv or given a release on VHS or dvd. It was however shown several times on the ABC Network in Australia which is where this copy was obtained. I will remove the film immediately if a copyright holder objects, or if a dvd release is announced. Life is late 1940s Britain was pretty grim for many people with ongoing rationing, and this film would have brought a smile to many faces at the time.
