A time-lapse video of the Cornus kousa 'China Girl' (Flowering Dogwood) in our gardens.
The video begins in late May 2012 as the flower bracts begin to colour up and turn white and ends in early July as they begin to go over and fall. June was terribly wet and windy, and you can see the storms go through.

The specimen in the video is approx 7 years old.

Named after the grand daughter of a Japanese nurseryman, Cornus kousa 'Miss Satomi' is an exceptionally free flowering selection with masses of large, rich-pink flower bracts in June. On occasions white flowers may be borne, sometimes on the north side of the plant whilst the south facing aspect has pink flowers.

Two or Three years ago I planted an Alternate Leaf Dogwood sapling because I read a short sentance or two about it in the book "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy. He praises it for the berries it makes that birds love to eat, but I have to praise it for the flowers and assortment of pollinators it attracts! This is the first year it's flowered and I've never seen a tree do it so profusely. I have Viburnums that are taller than this that don't produce as many flowers. This was a good pollinator investment.

The genus Cornus is a group of about 30-60 species of woody plants in the family Cornaceae, commonly known as dogwoods. Most dogwoods are deciduous trees or shrubs, but a few species are nearly herbaceous perennial subshrubs, and a few of the woody species are evergreen. Several species have small heads of inconspicuous flowers surrounded by an involucre of large, typically white petal-like bracts, while others have more open clusters of petal-bearing flowers. The various species of dogwood are native throughout much of temperate and boreal Eurasia and North America, with China and Japan and the southeastern United States particularly rich in native species.
The dogwoods include the common dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) of Eurasia, the widely cultivated flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) of eastern North America, the Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) of western North America, the Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa) of eastern Asia, and two low-growing boreal species, the Canadian and Eurasian dwarf cornels (or bunchberries), Cornus canadensis and Cornus suecica, respectively.

Hydrangea Paniculata - Rheny - Vanilla Strawberry is a cultivar Panicle Hydrangea. Panicle Hydrangeas are members of the eponymous family, Hydrangaceae, although some folks consider it a member of Saxifragaaceae. There are about 23 species in the genus, mostly shrubs, but some climbers. Most all seem to be deciduous. The genus name comes from the Greek, hydor for water and aggos for jar, alluding to theircup-shaped fruits. Panicle Hydrangeas bloom from July through September, and the individual flowers last a long time. Starting out white, they change to a purplish pink as they age. The pyramidal panicles are about six to eight inches long, a bit more than half as wide. Most of the flowers included in the panicle are fertile and not showy, but the sterile flowers make up for it. Enjoy the Panicle Hydrangea during the summer months, because there isn’t a lot to recommend it for the rest of the year. Not much fall color to speak of, a coarse leggy appearance during the winter and spring, and even when in bloom, it’s difficult to find something that really goes with this plant. Your best bet for growing this plant most successfully is to plant it in partial shade, the best situation being sun in the morning, shade in the mid-day and part of the afternoon. It doesn’t look good when drought-stressed, and it gets that way fairly easily. If you plant it in full sun, be prepared to water it well every three or four days during the high heat of summer. Other than that, the Panicle Hydrangea is not that finicky. This plant along with its sister H. arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) bloom on this year’s wood, so cutting it down to the ground in late fall or early spring will keep it somewhat low and subdued in the landscape. If you do it in the fall, the supposedly coarse look during the winter will be replaced by something we all strive for: Zen simplicity, or in other words nothing. -

These are not selected for the beauty of their flowers but for the wonderful flavor and production of the fruit. They do have a wonderful flowers though, I love the flowers of of the apricots. They're slightly fragrant, are five petaled with multiples of five of all the stamens and other flower parts which are indicative of its familial heritage in the rose family, Rosaceae. It shares that family with apples, pears and many other what we call pomme fruits. You want to plant apricots where they are protected from an early spring warm up. You want to suppress the time of bloom to a point where, when they're in bloom you won't have a killing frost. So you don't want to plant this in a protected spot on the south side of a wall or a building, you wan to put it where there's lots of air drainage through it so that if it does frost, the frost will sink to the bottom land nearby. You also want that good air drainage because this plant shares the traits with many of its familial cousins that it's subject to fungal problems and by having good air movement through and around the plant, you can lessen a lot of those problems. We also went good soil drainage. Average garden soil is good for most fruit trees, it doesn't have to be real rich and in fact it should not be real rich. You don't want to fertilize fruit trees with lots of nitrogen, you'd rather have a good, well drained garden soil. You definitely want full sun for apricot trees. Apricots flower in mid to late April and then produce the ripe fruit from about fourth of July to the middle of that month. The fruit ripens pretty much all at once so it's best to have your canning equipment ready for apricot preserves, or have an apricot party. You can also use it to flavor wine and cordials, but it's best eaten fresh. Apricots in our climate here in Connecticut are a little bit of a short lived plant. We planted this one as a bare rooted whip and got, a small handful of apricots the second the second year. The third year we had enough to fill my hat or maybe two, and then the fourth year we had almost a bushel. There are a number of disease and insect pests to worry about with apricot trees and peaches and plums unless you have an active spraying program. We don't spray here, we prefer to use good cultural practices. Good cultural practices for apricots include these: Clean up in the fall around the plant, get all the leaves and debris from the apricot trees or other fruit trees. Pick that all up and get it out , remove it from the site. When pruning apricot trees, you want to prune in such a way as to provide as much sunlight penetrating the canopy and hitting the trunk and the branches as possible. This will help dry out the apricot tree and helps prevent the fungal problems. It's also true that horizontally placed branches tend to flower more than branches that ascend steeply and therefore bears more fruit. Apricots may be a short lived tree maybe ten or twelve years so you'll get eight, maybe nine years or so of fruit production out of out them in our climate here in Connecticut, but it's totally worth it. Alternate Leaf Dogwood, Cornus alternifolia
Two or Three years ago I planted an Alternate Leaf Dogwood sapling because I read a short sentance or two about it in the book "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy. He praises it for the berries it makes that birds love to eat, but I have to praise it for the flowers and assortment of pollinators it attracts! This is the first year it's flowered and I've never seen a tree do it so profusely. I have Viburnums that are taller than this that don't produce as many flowers. This was a good pollinator investment. -

Hydrangea Paniculata - Rheny - Vanilla Strawberry is a cultivar Panicle Hydrangea. Panicle Hydrangeas are members of the eponymous family, Hydrangaceae, although some folks consider it a member of Saxifragaaceae. There are about 23 species in the genus, mostly shrubs, but some climbers. Most all seem to be deciduous. Solidago is an interesting genus of plants. I'm looking at this lovely selection of Solidago rugosa, they're the Goldenrods in common parlance. This thing is full of pollinators, I'm seeing Bumblebees, honeybees, and there's some kind of hornet in the middle here. It's a wonderful late season wildflower, also it's a great cut flower. What I like about Solidago rugosa - fireworks is it stays fairly small. Two or Three years ago I planted an Alternate Leaf Dogwood sapling because I read a short sentance or two about it in the book "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy. He praises it for the berries it makes that birds love to eat, but I have to praise it for the flowers and assortment of pollinators it attracts! This is the first year it's flowered and I've never seen a tree do it so profusely. I have Viburnums that are taller than this that don't produce as many flowers. This was a good pollinator investment.

An unusual cross between Cornus kousa and Cornus capitata, this beautiful selection has masses of large, creamy-white bracts in mid-summer and lush green leaves.

Hydrangea Paniculata - Rheny - Vanilla Strawberry is a cultivar Panicle Hydrangea. Panicle Hydrangeas are members of the eponymous family, Hydrangaceae, although some folks consider it a member of Saxifragaaceae. There are about 23 species in the genus, mostly shrubs, but some climbers. Most all seem to be deciduous. The genus name comes from the Greek, hydor for water and aggos for jar, alluding to theircup-shaped fruits.
Panicle Hydrangeas bloom from July through September, and the individual flowers last a long time. Starting out white, they change to a purplish pink as they age. The pyramidal panicles are about six
to eight inches long, a bit more than half as wide. Most of the flowers included in the panicle are fertile and not showy, but the sterile flowers make up for it. Enjoy the Panicle Hydrangea during the summer months, because there isn’t a lot to recommend it
for the rest of the year. Not much fall color to speak of, a coarse leggy appearance during the winter and spring, and even when in bloom, it’s difficult to find something that really goes with this plant.
Your best bet for growing this plant most successfully is to plant it in partial shade, the best situation being sun in the morning, shade in the mid-day and part of the afternoon. It doesn’t look good
when drought-stressed, and it gets that way fairly easily. If you plant it in full sun, be prepared to water it well every three or four days during the high heat of summer. Other than that, the Panicle Hydrangea is not that finicky. This plant along with its sister H. arborescens (Smooth Hydrangea) bloom on this year’s wood, so cutting it down to the ground in late fall or early spring will keep it somewhat low and subdued in the landscape. If you do it in the fall, the supposedly coarse look during the winter will be replaced by
something we all strive for: Zen simplicity, or in other words nothing.

Apricots and how to grow apricots. How to prune apricot trees.
This time of year, all the cherry trees are starting to pop into bloom and the same genus applies to Apricots. Apricots belong to the same genus that includes cherries and plums, Prunus, a very large group of plants. These are not selected for the beauty of their flowers but for the wonderful flavor and production of the fruit. They do have a wonderful flowers though, I love the flowers of of the apricots. They're slightly fragrant, are five petaled with multiples of five of all the stamens and other flower parts which are indicative of its familial heritage in the rose family, Rosaceae. It shares that family with apples, pears and many other what we call pomme fruits.
You want to plant apricots where they are protected from an early spring warm up. You want to suppress the time of bloom to a point where, when they're in bloom you won't have a killing frost. So you don't want to plant this in a protected spot on the south side of a wall or a building, you wan to put it where there's lots of air drainage through it so that if it does frost, the frost will sink to the bottom land nearby. You also want that good air drainage because this plant shares the traits with many of its familial cousins that it's subject to fungal problems and by having good air movement through and around the plant, you can lessen a lot of those problems. We also went good soil drainage. Average garden soil is good for most fruit trees, it doesn't have to be real rich and in fact it should not be real rich. You don't want to fertilize fruit trees with lots of nitrogen, you'd rather have a good, well drained garden soil. You definitely want full sun for apricot trees.
Apricots flower in mid to late April and then produce the ripe fruit from about fourth of July to the middle of that month. The fruit ripens pretty much all at once so it's best to have your canning equipment ready for apricot preserves, or have an apricot party. You can also use it to flavor wine and cordials, but it's best eaten fresh. Apricots in our climate here in Connecticut are a little bit of a short lived plant. We planted this one as a bare rooted whip and got, a small handful of apricots the second the second year. The third year we had enough to fill my hat or maybe two, and then the fourth year we had almost a bushel.
There are a number of disease and insect pests to worry about with apricot trees and peaches and plums unless you have an active spraying program. We don't spray here, we prefer to use good cultural practices. Good cultural practices for apricots include these: Clean up in the fall around the plant, get all the leaves and debris from the apricot trees or other fruit trees. Pick that all up and get it out , remove it from the site. When pruning apricot trees, you want to prune in such a way as to provide as much sunlight penetrating the canopy and hitting the trunk and the branches as possible. This will help dry out the apricot tree and helps prevent the fungal problems. It's also true that horizontally placed branches tend to flower more than branches that ascend steeply and therefore bears more fruit. Apricots may be a short lived tree maybe ten or twelve years so you'll get eight, maybe nine years or so of fruit production out of out them in our climate here in Connecticut, but it's totally worth it. The taste of fresh, hand picked, tree ripened apricots is something you won't forget. It's like biting into sunlight!

Solidago is an interesting genus of plants. I'm looking at this lovely selection of Solidago rugosa, they're the Goldenrods in common parlance. This thing is full of pollinators, I'm seeing Bumblebees, honeybees, and there's some kind of hornet in the middle here. It's a wonderful late season wildflower, also it's a great cut flower.
What I like about Solidago rugosa - fireworks is it stays fairly small. A lot of the Solidagos are very aggressive plants, not only setting seed and spreading by the germination of seeds, but also underground runners. They will colonize an area very quickly. Solidago rugosa - fireworks is a little bit more restrained, it plays nice in the garden. They call it fireworks for reason, these lovely sprays of golden yellow flowers pointing the same way on the branch. That's a lovely, lovely trait on this particular variety of Solidago rugosa.
Another interesting aspect about Solidago the genus is that in the early part of the twentieth century the rubber tree had gone into a serious decline because of a disease that affected all of the rubber plantings. So they were looking for other sources for rubber and Thomas Edison was working on cultural techniques and a breeding program to create a Solidago that would provide a source for rubber. He ended up with a twelve foot Solidago plant, and actually his friend Henry Ford delivered a Model-T to Thomas Edison with tires made from rubber from Solidago!
In the genus Solidago there are over a hundred and twenty species, we looked at Solidago - fireworks. I'm not sure which one this is, but I want to emphasize that there are different sizes of plants. The Solidago rugosa - fireworks, rather small, two and a half or three feet and some of the others species can get well over five or six feet tall. They are very aggressive plants if you allow them to set seed, they will set seed all over your garden the underground runners will also colonize an area very quickly. They do like full sun, they will tolerate light shade. Solidagos are very forgiving as to soils they are tolerant of just about the type of soil except the very boggy soils. They do well in dry locations, they do will near road sides which makes me think that there are salt tolerant.

The genus was first formally described by German botanist Joseph Gaertner in the second volume of his major work De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum in 1791. Gaertner named the genus after Theodorus Gaza, a 15th-century translator of the works of Theophrastus.
Gazania is a member of the tribe Arctotideae and the subtribe Gorteriinae. Within the subtribe it is close to Hirpicium and Gorteria. Many of the species of Gazania are hard to distinguish and the number of species assigned to the genus has varied widely from one author to another.
In 1959, Helmut Roessler published what he considered to be a preliminary revision of Gazania. At that time, he recognized 16 species. Roessler published some amendments to his treatment in 1973.
In 2009, a phylogeny of the genus was published. It was based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequences. In this study, all of Roessler's species except Gazania othonnites were sampled. The authors found that eight species were not really separate, but formed a species complex. The seven species found to be distinct were G. jurineifolia, G. caespitosa, G. ciliaris, G. tenuifolia, G. heterochaeta, G. schenckii, and G. lichtensteinii.

Light shade or full sun is just fine, although I have seen one or two growing under Oaks and Tulip Poplars, and they flowered reliably. They are reputed to be pollution tolerant, but on that point I will not stake my reputation. There is pollution and there is POLLUTION, in my opinion, and where the line that divides tolerant and intolerant depends on whether you live in Chester, PA or Chester, CT.
The main display for the American Fringe tree happens in early June here in Connecticut, lasting for about three weeks, if the weather permits. Rowans are mostly small deciduous trees 10–20 m tall, though a few are shrubs.
The fruit has a 4 to 8 mm diameter and is bright orange or red in most species, but pink, yellow or white in some Asian species.
The fruit are soft and juicy, which makes them a very good food for birds, particularly waxwings and thrushes, which then distribute the rowan seeds in their droppings.
The fruit are eaten by about 60 bird species and several mammals.
The wood is dense and used for carving and turning and for tool handles and walking sticks.
Rowan fruit are a traditional source of tannins for vegetable dyes.
The fruit of European Rowan can be made into a slightly bitter jelly which in Britain is traditionally eaten as an accompaniment to game, and into jams and other preserves, on their own, or with other fruit.
The fruit can also be a substitute for coffee beans, and have many uses in alcoholic beverages.
It is used to flavour liqueurs and cordials and to produce country wine and to flavour ale.
The European rowan has a long tradition in European mythology and folklore.
It was thought to be a magical tree and give protection against malevolent beings.
The tree was also called "wayfarer's tree" or "traveller's tree" because it supposedly prevents those on a journey from getting lost.

Port Orford Cedar is native to southwestern Oregon and spots in northwestern California. It will grow to well over a hundred feet in the wild (the national champion is 239 feet high by 39 feet wide, in Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon), but generally under cultivation it will grow to 60 maybe 80 feet in height. As you saw from the figures representing the national champion, they are rather narrow in stature, with a narrow pyramidal shape as a youngster. The growth rate is medium to fast: the photo shows one of our specimens bought as a two foot plant and planted four years ago. It’s about sixteen feet tall, so I’d count that as growing pretty quickly.
Port Orford Cedars prefer well-drained soil but with adequate moisture available. In the wild, they grow along stream banks but also can be found on drier upland soils. They seem to do better when there is good soil- and atmospheric moisture handy: think the misty valleys of the Siskiyou Mountains. They do not like the heat of the summers in the southern areas of our great nation, but so far, here in New England, they seem to do well. I would also add that some protection from winter wind is recommended. They are hardy from Zone 5 to Zone 7 or 8, so that’s right in the wheelhouse of us here in New England.
The leaves are arranged in flattened tightly pressed planes along the horizontal frond-like stems, giving this plant an unusual textural focal point in the landscape. Used as a screen or as a specimen, the Port Orford Cedar will provide wonderful deep green to blue-green and even light yellow green color to the landscape. There are many cultivars or selected varieties of the species, some with the color variation of the leaves, some with a more dwarf or weeping form.
There is a root-rot fungus that has affected this tree, including in its home territory. Unfortunately it is easily transported on the tires of vehicles like logging trucks (inherent in the activity is ill health and mortality for trees) and off-road recreational vehicles. Just by visiting the forest, we affect it. That is the fate of the human condition, I’m afraid. By the time we’ve figured out what’s affecting natural systems, we’ve damaged them by just being there.

This family has about 27 to 30 genera (depending on which authority you use), ranging from the Junipers to Bald Cypress, Giant Redwoods to Arborvitae. The largest plants on our planet (tallest=Coast Redwood; largest by trunk volume =Giant Sequoia) are members of the Cypress family as is the second-oldest plant (Alerce or Fitzroya cupressoides which is 3642 years old), after the Bristle-cone Pine.
