Here are items culled from early 1930s UK cinema variety shorts from British Lion - "Musical Film Revue" & "Equity Revue" series. Directed by Herbert Smith. This item is a 9.5mm UK Pathescope 'home movie' release T.9328 "Variety Number 16" of December 1938.
The items include:
Stanelli & Edgar 'murder' Rubenstein's "Melody in F"
The Nile Players - "Speak To Me Of Love"
Betty Astell sings "I Raised My Hat"
(Stanelli was born in Dublin as Edward Stanley de Groot, studying violin at the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music, after graduating playing with the Bournemouth Symphony, London Symphony and Halle Orchestras. Later he moved to variety, initially as a double act Stanelli & Edgar (both classical violinists) who fooled with violins, pianos and tap danced He later toured his own solo show "Stanelli's Stag Party" often with his "Hornchestra" a contraption with dozens of motor horns on which he would play various tunes. Stanelli died in 1961 - great info. from "Roy Hudd's Cavalcade of Variety Acts"! )
These British Lion musical shorts are believed 'lost' as cinema prints with just these rare 9.5mm 'home movie' prints remaining.

Cyril Fletcher - comedian.
Location of events unknown.
L/S of the Fletchers' cottage. The Pathe reporter comes to the door and is greeted by Cyril's wife Betty Astell. She takes him to Cyril who is pushing a wheelbarrow. They chat and he says he is doing a bit of farming to help Britain's food supply but he is not a proper farmer. M/S of sheep in a field. He strokes a rabbit saying it is next Sunday's dinner. Betty feeds the chickens and Cyril shows us the potato patch. He pays tribute to the real farmers in Britain and we see a montage of hay, cows, wheat etc. on a working farm. Cyril then impersonates a comic yokel character called George Wurzel, Betty asks him his views on farming but he would rather talk about his fat girlfriend.

However it was later released (sadly savagely cut) on the UK Pathescope 9.5mm home movie film format as T.9130 in September 1938 - here is George Gee singing "No Fear" from the film.

Betty Astell
Betty Astell (23 May 1912 – 26 July 2005) was an English actress.
Born Betty Julia Hymans at 54 Cranhurst Road in Willesden, Middlesex, she was married to entertainer Cyril Fletcher for more than 60 years, from 18 May 1941 until his death on 1 January 2005. They had a daughter, actress/comedienne Jill Fletcher.
Astell acted with her husband on his television series, The Cyril Fletcher Show, and was one of the first people to appear in John Logie Baird's experimental television on the BBC's 30 line shows.
Astell died in a hospital near her home in Guernsey, aged 93, seven months after the death of her husband.

Here are items culled from early 1930s UK cinema variety shorts from British Lion - "Musical Film Revue" & "Equity Revue" series. Directed by Herbert Smith. This item is a 9.5mm UK Pathescope 'home movie' release T.9328 "Variety Number 16" of December 1938.

Stanelli & Edgar 'murder' Rubenstein's "Melody in F"
The Nile Players - "Speak To Me Of Love"
Betty Astell sings "I Raised My Hat"
(Stanelli was born in Dublin as Edward Stanley de Groot, studying violin at the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music, after graduating playing with the Bournemouth Symphony, London Symphony and Halle Orchestras. Later he moved to variety, initially as a double act Stanelli & Edgar (both classical violinists) who fooled with violins, pianos and tap danced He later toured his own solo show "Stanelli's Stag Party" often with his "Hornchestra" a contraption with dozens of motor horns on which he would play various tunes. Stanelli died in 1961 - great info. from "Roy Hudd's Cavalcade of Variety Acts"! )
These British Lion musical shorts are believed 'lost' as cinema prints with just these rare 9.5mm 'home movie' prints remaining.

They chat and he says he is doing a bit of farming to help Britain's food supply but he is not a proper farmer. M/S of sheep in a field. He strokes a rabbit saying it is next Sunday's dinner. Betty feeds the chickens and Cyril shows us the potato patch. He pays tribute to the real farmers in Britain and we see a montage of hay, cows, wheat etc. on a working farm. Cyril then impersonates a comic yokel character called George Wurzel, Betty asks him his views on farming but he would rather talk about his fat girlfriend.

Albert Sandler and colleagues perform "Black Eyes". Full title reads: "There's little need to introduce the next Artist to British Listeners. Millions have heard him on the Radio... Albert Sandler. The Celebrated Violinist." M/S of Albert playing his violin - he is accompanied by a pianist and a cellist. A L/S shows all three of them playing together. Pathetone Parade of 1940. Compilation of variety turns from Pathetone Weekly, Pathe Sound Pictorial and New Sound Pictorial cinemagazines. Pathe Studio, London. Nosmo King with Hubert - comic sketch with Vernon Watson in blackface and Jack Watson as the orchestra leader heckling him from the pit. They engage in crosstalk about trouble with their wives, politics and big game hunting. This is probably missing item from PSP 898.
