North Korea frees detained US men Miller and Bae (BBC) Two Americans who were being held in detention in North Korea, Matthew Todd Miller and Kenneth Bae, have been released and are on their way home. US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is accompanying the men, the US has confirmed. Their release follows that of a third American, Jeffrey Fowle, last month. The US had accused North Korea of using the detained Americans as pawns in a diplomatic game, a charge the North Koreans had denied. 'Hostile acts' The US department of state said in a statement that it "welcomes the release of US citizens Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller from the DPRK [North Korea], where they have been held for two years and seven months, respectively". Mr Miller, 24, had been sentenced to six years' hard labour in September for what North Korean state media described as "hostile acts". He had been in custody since 10 April when, according to North Korean sources, he destroyed his tourist visa and demanded asylum. Mr Bae had been arrested in November 2012 as he entered the north-eastern port city of Rason, a special economic zone near North Korea's border with China. He has been described as both a tour operator and Christian missionary. North Korea said he used his tourism business to form groups to overthrow the government. He was sentenced to 15 years' hard labour in May 2013.

Regional authorities in Japan have approved the restart of the idle nuclear power plant at Sendai, paving the way for a revival of the nuclear industry three years after it was shut down in the wake of the Fukushima disaster. The southern Kagoshima prefecture has voted to back a move by a local township to restart the two-reactor Sendai plant. Anti-nuclear protesters who had crowded into the hall were not shy in making their opposition known, waving banners with the word “no” written in large letters as they uttered howls of protest from the public gallery. They did not manage to prevent 38 of the assembly’s 47 members from voting in favour. They did manage to drown out the region’s pro-nuclear governor, who struggled to make himself heard above the din. “With regards to the Sendai nuclear plant reactors 1 and 2, I take seriously the prefectural assembly’s decision to approve the petition to restart and believe that their intent to restart has been shown,” Yuichiro Ito said, though few in the chamber heard his words. Lying 1,000 kilometres southwest of Tokyo, the Sendai nuclear plant should become the first to re-open since an earthquake and tsunami sent the Fukushima station into meltdown in 2011. The vote represents a victory for Japan’s government, which has been forced to import expensive fossil fuels to replace atomic power. Until the disaster, the nuclear industry supplied around 30 percent of Japan’s electricity. Sendai will operate under a new independent regulator, but is unlikely to open until next year pending further safety checks.

Rob O'Neill named as SEAL Team Six hero who shot 9/11 mastermind three times in head The Navy SEAL who shot Osama bin Laden dead in the special force's most famous operation can be named today. The Navy hero is set to give a full interview to Fox News later this month and waive his anonymity but MailOnline has established that he is Rob O'Neill, a highly decorated veteran who quit after 16 years service. In an exclusive interview Rob's father, Tom O'Neill, tells MailOnline, 'People are asking if we are worried that ISIS will come and get us because Rob is going public. I say I'll paint a big target on my front door and say come and get us.' He is one of the most distinguished members ever of the elite force but now faces being frozen out of its circles for revealing its most closely held secrets. O'Neill was personally congratulated for killing bin Laden in his account at close range with three shots to his forehead during the SEAL raid on Abbottobad, in Pakistan, on 2 May 2011. Questions have previously been raised over the exact narrative of how bin laden came to die, although the dispute centers on an alternative account which claims O'Neill shot him once, leaving him mortally-wounded and the terrorist was killed by two other SEALs with further shots to the chest rather than forehead. O'Neill's decision to speak out was prompted by losing some of his military benefits by quitting the SEALs after 16 years rather than staying for a full 20 years of service. Today details of his extraordinary military record can be disclosed. O'Neill grew up in Butte, Montana, a former copper mining boomtown that has now fallen on hard times. In total he was deployed on more than a dozen tours of duty in active combat, in four different warzones, including Iraq and Afghanistan. In the course of those tours he undertook more than 400 separate combat missions.

The International Criminal Court announced Thursday that it will not prosecute Israel for a 2010 raid on a Turkish flotilla bound for Gaza, in which nine activists were killed, despite evidence that pointed to war crimes. Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said that despite a "reasonable basis" to believe war crimes were committed, there was not "sufficient gravity to justify further action by the ICC." The Israeli foreign ministry took "positive note" of the decision, but added Israel considered the case politically motivated and legally unfounded, and regrets the waste of the court's time and resources. Pro-Palestinian activists aboard the Mavi Marmara were aiming to break the maritime blockade of Gaza when Israeli forces swarmed the vessel, killing eight Turks and one Turkish-American.

Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population.
