Deep Impact was a NASA space probe launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on January 12, 2005. It was designed to study the interior composition of the comet Tempel 1 (9P/Tempel), by releasing an impactor into the comet. On July 4, 2005, the impactor successfully collided with the comet's nucleus. The impact excavated debris from the interior of the nucleus, forming an impact crater.
Deep Impact embarked on an extended mission designated EPOXI (Extrasolar Planet Observation and Deep Impact Extended Investigation) to visit other comets, after being put to sleep in 2005 upon completion of the Tempel 1 mission.
Its first extended visit was to do a flyby of Comet Boethin, but with some complications. On July 21, 2005 Deep Impact executed a trajectory correction maneuver that allows the spacecraft to use Earth's gravity to begin a new mission in a path towards another comet.
The original plan was for a December 5, 2008 flyby of Comet Boethin, coming within 700 kilometers of the comet. However, as the Earth gravity assist approached, astronomers were unable to locate Comet Boethin, which may have broken up into pieces too faint to be observed. Consequently, its orbit could not be calculated with sufficient precision to permit a flyby.
JPL team targeted Deep Impact toward Comet Hartley 2. However, this would require an extra two years of travel for Deep Impact. On May 28, 2010, a burn of 11.3 seconds was conducted, to enable the June 27 Earth fly-by to be optimized for the transit to Hartley 2 and fly-by on November 4.
On November 4, 2010, the Deep Impact extended mission (EPOXI) returned images from comet Hartley 2.[63] EPOXI came within 700 kilometers of the comet, returning detailed photographs of the "peanut" shaped cometary nucleus and several bright jets. The probe's medium-resolution instrument captured the photographs.
On August 8, 2013, communications with the spacecraft were lost. The mission team determined the source of the problem on August 30, and attempted to restore communications.
On September 20, 2013, NASA abandoned further attempts to contact the craft and declared the mission lost.

Encouraing Girls to Major in Science Talk by Dr. David E. Harker
On Friday, April 24, 2015, 10:00 - 11:00 am in the Electronics Lab,
A talk on how to Encourage Girls on how to Major in Sciences by Dr. David E. Harker; He is an Associate Research Scientist at the University of California, San Diego/Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (UCSD/CASS), and has studied the dust properties of comets for over 15 years. He began his career participating in numerous flights on the NASA Kupier Airborne Observatory, flying out of the NASA Ames Research Center (Moffet Field, CA) and Christchurch, New Zealand. Subsequently, as a graduate student at the University of Wyoming, he became involved with mid-infrared spectrophotometric observations of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at the 2.3-m Wyoming Infrared Observatory and the 3-m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). As an NRC postdoc at NASA Ames, he continued to observe comets at the IRTF and the NOAO Gemini 8-m telescope on Hawaii and in Chile. He led the Gemini-North (Mauna Kea, HI) observations of the NASA Deep Impact Mission in 2005 in which an impactor collided with comet 9P/Tempel 1, as well as led the Gemini-South (Cerro Pachon, Chile) observations of comet 103P/Hartley 2 during the NASA EPOXI Mission in 2010 during which the Deep Impact satellite performed a close flyby of comet Hartley 2. Along with collaborators, he has been involved with observations of a suite of comets using the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, creating a large database of cometary spectra. He was also involved in the planning and execution of ground-based IR observations from the IRTF and Gemini-N of the NASA LCROSS experiment in which an impactor collided with the southern polar region of the Moon in search of subsurface water. Dr. Harker has been a researcher with UCSD/CASS for over 10 years, his research centering on the dust mineralogy in comets, and what that mineralogy tells us about the conditions in the early protosolar nebula that not only led to the formation of early cometesimals, but to the planets as well. Specifically, he observes comets in the mid-infrared part of the spectrum, taking images and spectra. He then analyzes the spectra using laboratory measured spectra of minerals and tries to match those with the spectra we get from the comets.

Tempel 1 - Deep Impact Mission
Tempel 1 (official designation: 9P/Tempel) is a periodic Jupiter-family comet discovered by Wilhelm Tempel in 1867. It completes an orbit of the Sun every 5.5 years. Tempel 1 was the target of the Deep Impact space mission, which photographed a deliberate high-speed impact upon the comet in 2005. It was re-visited by the Stardust spacecraft on February 15, 2011

Deep Impact - Orbiter Space Flight Simulator 2010
