The Strange Case of the End of Civilization as We Know It (1977)

The grandchild of Professor James Moriarty had promised the world that it has only five days left to live. Moriarty is a master of disguise, a crack shot, and is very patient. Several government figures are shot to death, and it seems that it truly is the end of civilization as we know it- until the President learns that the grandson of Sherlock Holmes is living at 221B Baker Street, and send the Police Commisioner of Scotland Yard to employ him. Unfortunately, Arthur Sherlock Holmes is a quick-tempered, ranting, violent bungler, and his assistant, Dr. William Watson (grandson of Dr. John H. Watson) is one of the most moronic creatures ever to walk the earth, although he is invaluable because he has "bionic bits". Holmes has inherited a drug habit from his grandfather, one which his housekeeper, Mrs. Hudson, is less than discreet about, and the sleek Moriarty is also one step ahead of him, eventually murdering the police commisioner. Finally, Holmes decides to hold a party, inviting the world's most distinguished detectives, hoping to flush Moriarty out of hiding. However, it does not go as planned.

(CBS) — President Barack Obama attended a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Lincoln Park Monday after casting his ballot on the first day of early voting in Illinois. CBS 2’s Jim Williams reports the president had quite an encounter with a couple of voters this morning at his polling place at 43rd and Cottage Grove. The president did vote with the predictable fanfare and sounds of cameras, but what happened as he stood next to fellow voter Aia Cooper was not expected. Mike Jones, Cooper’s boyfriend, told President Obama, “don’t touch my girlfriend.” “I said, I know you’re Mr. President, but don’t touch my girlfriend,” Jones said. Yep, Jones teased the president. “I didn’t know what to say. I was just shaking. I said ‘Oh boy, this is the president. What am I supposed to do?” Cooper said. The president expressed mock annoyance. “There’s an example of a brother just embarrassing me for no reason, just for no reason whatsoever.” Mr. Obama predicted what Cooper would say later to her friends. “‘I can’t believe Mike — he’s such a fool. I was just mortified. Fortunately, the president was nice about it. So it’s alright,’” Obama said. Jones says that, “It was so silent in there and everyone was just taking pictures I figured I had to say something to make people laugh.” It was President Obama who got the last laugh as he gave Cooper a hug and kissed her on the cheek. “Give me a kiss and give him something to talk about. Now, he’s really jealous.” No jealousy, just an everlasting memory. Mike and Aia say they didn’t know the president was going to be there on the same day they were planning to vote. One day, they’ll tell their grandkids about it. After the president voted, he made a stop at one of Gov. Quinn’s campaign offices on 47th St. The governor and Senator Dick Durbin were both there. The president brought sweets and encouraged campaign workers. President Obama arrived in Chicago Sunday night and attended a rally for Illinois Democrats at Chicago State University. The president left Chicago about 6:15 p.m. after leaving a fundraiser where he was expected to raise $400,000. South Side Pastor Corey Brooks is a staunch supporter of GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner and, he thinks people will be able to separate support for the president versus the candidates. “Our message is the same. This is not a race between Bruce Rauner and President Obama. This is a race between Bruce Rauner and Pat Quinn and based upon that, we still tell people to do the exact same thing that we’re telling them all the time, that is vote for Bruce Rauner because we absolutely believe he’s the best candidate,” he said. Pastor Brooks says he still supports Mr. Obama and voted for him for both times for president. In a major reversal, President Barack Obama ordered the United States into a broad military campaign Wednesday night to "degrade and ultimately destroy" Islamic State militants in two volatile Middle East nations authorizing airstrikes inside Syria for the first time as well as an expansion of strikes in Iraq. The president added that the U.S. will send 475 more U.S. troops into Iraq to supplement an existing American military presence that is helping Iraqi security forces battle Islamic State militants and secure diplomatic facilities. Obama announced the additional forces Wednesday in a prime-time speech to the nation. The new troops would join more than 1,000 U.S. military personnel in Iraq and would be embedded with Iraqi security forces and help identify targets for U.S. military airstrikes against the extremist group. The U.S. already has more than 750 U.S. military personnel supporting diplomatic security at facilities in Baghdad and nearly 300 at joint operating centers in Baghdad and Irbil. The White House says Obama spoke by telephone Wednesday with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. A Canadian soldier standing guard at a war memorial in the capital of Ottawa, Ontario, was shot and killed Wednesday. Gunfire also erupted inside Parliament and authorities say at least one gunman was killed. On Monday, authorities say a recent convert to Islam killed one Canadian soldier before being shot to death by police. Obama also expressed the American people's solidarity with Canada. Numerous Gunmen Reported, Shootings Confirmed Multiple Gun Shots Fired. Parliament Hill Attacked UPDATE: the soldier who was shot at the National War Memorial in Ottawa has died, CTV News has learned. Police confirmed the shooting at the War Memorial, and sealed off the area while the injured soldier was given emergency medical aid. He was later put into an ambulance. "We were waiting there for a city tour and suddenly I heard four shots," said Jan Luchtenburg, a tourist visiting downtown Ottawa from Holland. "Suddenly I saw a small guy with long black hair... with a long rifle, and he ran away after the shots, across streets in the direction of Parliament Hill," he said. Reevo Namic, another bystander, said "all of a sudden I just heard a shot, turned around and there was a guy with a rifle....and just pow pow." "Then I saw one of the other armed forces guys just running. He barrelled over, just ran right over. The other guy just dropped. I looked back and just dived underneath and immediately called 911." Because he has no medical background and because he's enjoyed a career as Democratic political insider, working as chief of staff for both former Vice President Al Gore and current Vice President Joe Biden. Except, apparently, when the president was George Bush, the health fear was the bird flu virus, and Bush's czar had no medical background. Note that prior to becoming the nation's bird flu czar, Bush's point-person served as general counsel for Amtrak. In 2004, Bush's bird flu czar was Stewart Simonson. He worked as an assistant secretary of health and human services for public health emergency preparedness.
