She is best known for her 13-year tenure on NBC's Today program, followed by 12 years as co-host of Dateline NBC, and for her public acknowledgements of her struggle with mental health and bipolar disorder.
Pauley competed in debate and public speaking tournaments through the Indiana High School Forensic Association while enrolled at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. Pauley graduated from Warren Central High School in 1968. She subsequently earned a scholarship to Indiana University, where she was involved in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. From 1976 to 1989 Pauley was the co-host, with Tom Brokaw and later Bryant Gumbel, of NBC's The Today Show. Following in the footsteps, both in career and in style, of the first female anchor of the show, Barbara Walters, she became a symbol for professional women, more specifically female journalists, in the 1980s (In her autobiography, "And So It Goes", Pauley's colleague Linda Ellerbee wrote, "She (Pauley) is what I want to be when I grow up"). NBC briefly experimented with a trio of anchors, Pauley, Gumbel, and Chris Wallace, before returning to a co-anchor format with Gumbel and with Pauley serving in a deferential co-host capacity.

Thou art God, all the evidence I ever need
Never shake my faith, I know, I know what it means
No books, no magic words, we don't need a ritual
Absolute truth it's so personal
Now I understand, Now I know it's true
Now I know it's me, Now I know it's you
You are, you're My Religion Now
Youre My Religion
You and I remain, were one in the same
No flesh, no blood can change
No more doubt or fear, Your mouth to my ear
Use me, flow through me, I am listening
Sing through me, let the song be pure
I know why Im here, Ive been here before
I know how it ends, it never ends
Now I understand (Heaven and Hell)
Now I know it's true (Heaven and Hell)
Now I know it's me (Heaven and Hell)
Now I know it's you
You are, you're My Religion Now
Youre My Religion
You and I remain, were one in the same
No flesh, no blood can change
No more doubt or fear, Your mouth to my ear
My religion now
In my native tongue I can call your name
Any name, what's in a name, I'd love you just the same
Thou art God, all the evidence I need
Yes the ghost of Christmas yet to come
Has left his mark on everyone
Though the Winters looming dark and near
There's time to see while Springs still here
Don't turn your face to the wall
Trust in the strength of the small
Though uncertainty in every heart
And differences tear us apart
Oldest prophecies already true
Fear no mysteries, just me and you
Heaven on earth in a day
Always a will and always a way
Hold on (Brother)
Hold on, (Sister)
I imagine your lips on mine
And it takes my breath away.
I imagine what it would feel
Like to be the one in your arms
And in your dreams.
They say we come from two
Completely different worlds.
But anyone can see that they're
Wrong.
When I'm with you I feel blessed,
Safe and precious.
To know you is a gift from above
Imagine if we fell in love.
I imagine your hand on mine
And I'm filled with butterflies.
I imagine what it would sound
Like to hear you say that you'll
Love me 'til you die.
You saved my life in more ways
Than you will ever know.
When I see you I feel like I'm home.
When I'm with you I feel peace, I am
Complete.
To know you is a gift from above
Imagine if we fell in love.
Bridge
They say we come from two completely
Different worlds
But anyone can see that they're wrong.
When I'm with you I feel blessed,
Safe and precious.
Imagine if we fell in love.
What a gift it would be from
Driving down the freeway in my shiny big car
Sometimes forget what the truths are
My urge is to crash, the sweet Indian music
Flowing from my overturned car
You make me feel
You are so real
You make me feel like a step out of time
Chapman has a mansion at the top of the hill
He pays young girls for a good thrill
Is pleased all day long, until one day with boredom
Decided to go out for a kill
You make me feel
You are so real
You make me feel like a step out of time
It wasted a peace man
And gave us a fleece band
When times are tough
Roll baby roll
I see you spinning in your restless grave
Roll baby roll
I see you spinning in your restless grave
Ever did you see me on ritual road
I was a king to the flat toad
Almost turned the wheel when I came to see
Wisdom in the words that you wrote
You make me feel
You are so real
Your lips are moving darling
I know your saying something
Its revolutionary
But Im not listening honey
Casual conversation
Im going through the motions
Inside Im dieing baby
I think Im going crazy
The judges nudge each other
They nod in recognition
Their conscious responding
To this divine condition
Inside my head I hear a choir of angels screaming
Why don't you
What's the matter?
I try to myself
No I mustnt let it show
I gotta keep control
(Oh)
[Music]
You gaze into my eyes and
I know your seeing something
Its revolutionary but your not listening honey
A different hear and now I breathless to expectations
Id like reassure it
Don't look my hands shaking
They talk about me darling
Their voices loud as thunder
Its all that I can do to
Keep me from going under
If you could hear a voice
My upper lasting corner
Relentless mother-a-fucker
I try to tell myself
No I mustn't let it show
I gotta keep control
(Aw) yeah yeah
And every second Im awake
And every second I'm survive
And every ounce that I posses
(Ohs)
Every second that Im hear
Every second on the edge
Every second I could blow
Uh uh uh uh
What if I feel them coming
Smash you a thousand pieces
What if I gave all up?
And gave it all away
Would you say I was crazy?
Would have let a minute
Would you embrace me darling?
Or turn and runaway
[Music]
I try to tell myself
I mustnt let it show
Gotta keep control
I try to tell my self
Questioning the answers, looking for a passage to the
light
Reaching out for something, anything to make it through
the night
I don’t need tomorrow anymore, for this moment I am
higher
Closer than I’ve ever been before, and I feel it for
the first time
My imagination never could have dreamed a dream like
this
A silent revelation, clear enough to know it’s a good
thing when it is
Nothing ventured, nothing gained,
Even now it’s still the same
To the moon and back again,
Unafraid and unashamed
All my life I have waited for this
The stars align and the planets promise
And all creation united strong in our Perfect Love
Little four-leaf clover never really took me very far
I really thought it over, there’s more to this than
wishing on a star
As we decorate the righteous way, as we’re praying for
asylum
Sanctuary’s not so far away, as we see it for the first
time
Beautiful forever, more than just a miracle to me
I want to know it better
Opened up my eyes and the truth has set me free
And we know without a sound,
Sweet as honey, love profound
Fear is lost and joy is found
Ours forever, solid ground
All my life I have waited for this
The stars align and the planets promise
And all creation united strong in our Perfect Love
In the dark and unfamiliar I will not look away
Like a junkie for the real thing, I banish yesterday
Mona Lisa smiles, yes I’m fluent in both tongues
She’s got legs for miles, she could make it fun
She knows, she toys, it shows, oh boy
Moulabunda she says, Will I try a little harder?
She wants everything I’ve got,
she says she can almost taste it
She’s that kind of girl, And she’s knocking,
knocking down my front door
She could rock your world, she could take you down like
never before
She knows, she toys, we’re girls
In another life, or maybe on another planet
We were loving life, we were lavender lovers, yeah
She’s that kind of girl, and she’s knocking,
banging down my front door
She could rock your world, she could take you down like
never before
She knows, she toys, we’re girls
And she keeps coming back,
and she keeps coming back for more
And she keeps calling me, and she keeps calling me for
more
And she keeps coming back,
and she keeps coming back for more
And Sappho’s calling me, and Sappho screams to me to
come on, come on
She’s that, and she’s knocking, knocking down my front
door
She could rock you, Oh, she could take you down and beg
you for more
She’s that kind of girl, and she’s knocking,
kicking down my front door
She could, Oh, oh, she could shake you down and beg you
for more
She knows, she toys, we’re girls, oh boy
I have no quarrel with your point of view
Just understand that I got me mine too
Beauty in sunshine and beauty in rain
All things divergent and all things the same
Don’t try to change me,
Don’t rearrange me
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Oh no, I won’t do what you want me to
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Oh no, never will I be you
This is my canvas, I’ll paint what I like
Who ever told you that you had a right
Beauty in pleasure and beauty in pain
See how we differ again and again
Don’t try to play me
Love me or hate me
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Oh no, I won’t do what you want me to
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Oh no, never will I be you
Sometime I, I try to
Be like you, just like you
The hell that I’ve been through
I’m not you, I’m not you
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Oh no, I won’t do what you want me to
Oh no, I do not feel as you do
Nobody knows me like the monkey on my back
Hes got control now and I'll never get it back
Its a brutal attraction, like a moth to a deadly flame
Its a knee-jerk reaction, fall to my knees and beg
Just a still little voice, just a matter of choice
Just the mention of your name
Did it have to be me, why did it have to be me
The hunter is the game
Hey Mr. Jones, you led me on
Hey Mr. Jones, you did me wrong
Hell never leave me and he'd rather see me dead
He has deceived me, Im in way over my head
You appear every morning, and you scream when I try to sleep
You come on without warning, watch laughing as I bleed
Why you fucking with me, let me go I can't breathe
Yes the desperate have no shame
My insatiable need, my uncontrollable greed
The pleasure is the pain
Hey Mr. Jones, you led me on
Hey Mr. Jones, you did me wrong
Hey Mr. Jones, look what you did
Hey Mr. Jones, Im just a kid
Just look at me Im skin and bones
Well Im here, Im not there, and it feels good
To be here, and not there, watching burning wood
Floating through the air, I don't have a care
Two past three, it can't be any other time
It explodes in the road, and I witness it
No reply, bat an eye, cause it doesnt't't fit
See you over there, sitting in my chair
Perfect world, perfect girl, perfect tourniquet
I am over here, that is not my problem
I can disappear, I can just ignore them
Go away, Go away, I don't want to see
Go away, leave today, have a lovely trip
Only half believe what the five receive
Uncle Bob lost his job, Bobs your uncle, mate
I am over here, that is not my problem
I can disappear, I can just ignore them
Go away, it's OK, they'll make more of it
Itching stop, did I cop, did I get me some
Sing my little song, life goes marching on
Cause Im here, Im not there
You are the ignited, power I cannot explain
I get so excited, love that I cannot unchain
When we make contact, and you start to rise
You`ll be the only one, my DS 21
Pushing the maximum, me and my, my DS 21
I`m turning you on, I`m starting the fire
We know where it`s going when sparks start to fly
When we make contact, and you start to rise
You`ll be the only one, my DS 21
Pushing the maximum, me and my, my DS 21
Take me to the limit, my foot`s to the floor
I want to go faster baby, keep giving me more
You`ll be the only one, my DS 21
Pushing the maximum, me and my, my DS 21
Allons Y tout le monde with my DS 21
Don't Wanna Fall In Love
Jane Child
Ain't no personal thing, boy
But you've got to stay away
Far, far away from my heart, my heart
Don't you know what your kiss is doing
Let me tell it to you from the start, boy
I don't wanna fall in love
Love cuts just like a knife
You make the knife feel good
I'll fight you to the end, baby
You've been hanging around, boy
And you have started sinking in
Whoa baby, you're way out of line now
Unaware how this all got started
Let me tell it you one more time, boy
I don't wanna fall in love
Love cuts just like a knife
You make the knife feel good
I'll fight you to the end, baby
I learned something about myself
Last night with you I knew
I didn't want nobody else
And you're scaring me to death now baby
Nothing I can do, Now you're on your own
Better make it good on the telephone
I know how to make your hair stand up
Are you hip to what it's all about
Must be something you can do
To distinguish you from you
Don't Let It Get To You
All the puppets on the stage of life
Wearing costumes, Someones husbands wife
Wicked thoughts have been concealed from view
Id die blushing if I only knew
Must be something you can do
To distinguish you from you
Don't Let It Get To You
Time to testify, Baby tell the truth
Is my lifestyle really so uncouth
Give me liberty or give me death
Give me reason to get myself undressed
Happy ending, they're satisfied
You and I remain simply horrified
Smiling pillars, Holier than thou
Deviate, then take their bow
This should come as no surprise,
Its been happening right before your eyes
Baby, Baby Do Whatcha Do, what you’re doing
Baby loving you, and I do boy, Boy you move me
When the day is through, honeydew and no fooling
Ooh wee whatcha do, baby do what you’re doing
Ooh I got it bad, I got it good
Baby making love feel like it should
You came like an answer to a prayer
I’m all hung up and baby I don’t care
I’ve never been in love like this before
Every second I fall even more
Closer baby than I realize
One away from drowning in your eyes
Baby, Baby Do Whatcha Do, what you’re doing
Baby loving you, and I do boy, Boy you move me
When the day is through, honeydew and no fooling
Ooh wee whatcha do, baby do what you’re doing
Nothing else on earth could feel like this
Oh you took me prisoner with a kiss
Never wanted anything this much
I’m feeling my salvation in your touch
Ooh how did you know, how did you know
I was so afraid to let it show
Oh I want you so much I could die
Barely breathing, never so alive
I caught a feeling, I never knew before
Oh it’s good, it’s good, it’s good, it’s good, so good, so good
I’m beginning to falter, I’m only human, oh baby
Boy your love is heavy, love is deep
Oh you really knocked me off my feet
Hold me close and whisper in my ear
All those things that lovers love to hear
Baby when you look at me that way
You tell me more than words could ever say
Oh it’s so amazing, it’s so right
Im attracted anatomically
Need to know you scientifically
Strange confusion has come over me
Need the fusion between you and me
Mother Natures legislature, Mother Nature takes her course
Gravitation of the nation, Gravitation to the source
Im distracted biologically
My attention dominating me
Im a victim of Divine design
Im a victim of a one-track mind
Gut reaction, satisfaction, Gut reactions never lie
Need I mention my intention, Do I need an alibi
It happens every time you're next to me, Biology
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh uh oh, BiologyIm defenseless, lacking all control
Its relentless, longing of my soul
I am driven, Im completely yours
Its a given, I'll be back for more
Its instinctive, so distinctive, and on that you may depend
Don't go mess with Mother Nature, shell defeat you in the end
It happens every time you're next to me, Biology
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh uh oh, Biology
Need I mention my intention, Are you willing to supply
Gut reaction, Satisfaction, Gut reactions never lie
It happens every time you're next to me, Biology
All I do all day and all night I think of you
Every waking hour, at night I dream about you
Thoughts of you keep running through my mind
You haunt me like a song I can’t forget
I’m on a carousel
In endless circles, always coming back to you
I wonder if you ever think about me too
The more I tell myself to stop, the more I do
It’s getting to the point, I know, what can I do
I live and breathe and all I do is think of you
When I close my eyes I see your picture in my head
I feel your touch and taste a thousand kisses
Open up a book a to read, on every page I see
Your name in black and white
No matter how I try
It covers me like a blanket, wrap myself in you
I hold it close when it’s cold outside, I’m warm in you
The more I tell myself to stop, the more I do
It’s getting to the point, I know, what can I do
I live and breathe and all I do is think of you
Time stood still and I won’t be the same
I can’t go on like this, I’m calling out your name
What can I do
