Carmen is an opera in four acts by the French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, on 3 March 1875, and was not at first particularly successful; its initial run extended to 36 performances. Before this run was concluded, Bizet died suddenly, and thus knew nothing of the opera's later celebrity.
The opera, written in the genre of opéra comique with musical numbers separated by dialogue, tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naive soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen's love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life, immorality and lawlessness, and the tragic outcome in which the main character dies on stage, broke new ground in French opera and were highly controversial. After the premiere most reviews were critical, and the French public was generally indifferent. Carmen initially gained its reputation through a series of productions outside France, and was not revived in Paris until 1883; thereafter it rapidly acquired celebrity at home and abroad, and continues to be one of the most frequently performed operas; the "toreador's song" from Act 2 is among the best known of all operatic arias. Later commentators have asserted that Carmen forms the bridge between the tradition of opéra comique and the realism or verismo that characterised late 19th-century Italian opera.
Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1986), better known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer-songwriter. Raised in upstate New York, Del Rey moved to New York City at age eighteen, where she attended college and began writing music and performing in clubs.
In 2008, Del Rey contracted with an independent label and recorded a self-titled debut album which was briefly available on iTunes in 2010; Del Rey ultimately bought back the rights to the album and it was withdrawn soon after.
In June 2011, she released the song "Video Games" on the Internet, accompanied by a self-made music video that went viral in the following months. The song was later released as a single in October, leading up to Del Rey's major-label debut album, Born to Die, which was released on January 31, 2012 through Interscope Records. Born to Die debuted at number one in seven countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia. The album has spawned two worldwide top 10 hits: "Video Games" and "Born to Die".
Carlos Kleiber (3 July 1930 – 13 July 2004) was a German-born, Austrian classical conductor who spent most of his early life in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Vienna and New York City, and from the early 1960s his professional career in Germany.
Kleiber was born as Karl Ludwig Kleiber in Berlin, the son of the Austrian conductor Erich Kleiber and American Ruth Goodrich, from California. In 1940, the Kleiber family emigrated to Buenos Aires. Karl's name became Carlos. As a youth, he had an English governess, grew up in English boarding schools. He also composed, sang, and played piano and timpani. While his father noticed his son's musical talents, Erich Kleiber nevertheless dissuaded Carlos from pursuing a musical career: "What a pity the boy is musically talented", wrote his father to a friend.[citation needed]
Carlos Kleiber initially studied chemistry in Zürich, but soon decided to dedicate himself to music. He was repetiteur at the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich in 1952, and made his conducting debut with the operetta Gasparone at Potsdam theatre in 1954. From 1958 to 1964 he was Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg, and then at the Opera in Zürich from 1964 to 1966. Between 1966 and 1973 he was first Kapellmeister in Stuttgart, his last permanent post. During the following years, he often conducted at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
Georges Bizet (French pronunciation: [ʒɔʁʒ bizɛ]) formally Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, (25 October 1838 – 3 June 1875) was a French composer, mainly of operas. In a career cut short by his early death, he achieved few successes before his final work, Carmen, became one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the entire opera repertory.
During a brilliant student career at the Conservatoire de Paris, Bizet won many prizes, including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857. He was recognised as an outstanding pianist, though he chose not to capitalise on this skill and rarely performed in public. Returning to Paris after almost three years in Italy, he found that the main Parisian opera theatres preferred the established classical repertoire to the works of newcomers. His keyboard and orchestral compositions were likewise largely ignored; as a result, his career stalled, and he earned his living mainly by arranging and transcribing the music of others. Restless for success, he began many theatrical projects during the 1860s, most of which were abandoned. Neither of the two operas that reached the stage—Les pêcheurs de perles and La jolie fille de Perth—was immediately successful.
Maria Callas, Commendatore OMRI (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας) (December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. She combined an impressive bel canto technique, a wide-ranging voice and great dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.
Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. The press exulted in publicizing Callas's allegedly temperamental behaviour, her supposed rivalry with Renata Tebaldi and her love affair with Aristotle Onassis. Her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press. However, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "The Bible of opera"; and her influence was so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as artist—and still one of classical music's best-selling vocalists."
L'amour est un oiseau rebelle
Que nul ne peut apprivoiser
Et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle
S'il lui convient de refuser
(Love is a rebel bird
That no one can tame
And it's in vain that we call him
It's him that just refused us)

One speaks well, the other shuts up
And it's the other I prefer
He didn't say a thing but he pleases me)

Battit de l'aile et s'envola
L'amour est loin, tu peux l'attendre
Tu ne l'attends plus, il est là

Flapped its wing and flew away
Love is far away, you can wait for it
You're no longer waiting for it, it's there)
(All around you, quickly, quickly
It comes, goes away and it comes back
You believe holding it, it moves away from you
You think you're away from it, it holds you)

Last night she ran away
Left a letter by the telephone
She didn't take the time to say goodbye
He knows he has to find her
Find a way to make her come back home
She stretched her wings and learned to fly
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care for me
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care
Carmen, don't you care for me
He calls but there's no answer
Operator, ring it one more time
He thinks of her and shuts his eyes
She wears the ring he gave her
Something magic, and it once was mine
Will she be thinking of him tonight?
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care for me
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care
Carmen, don't you care for me
He has to find her
I really miss that girl
He steals into the night
He'll go mad without her
I'm really mad about her
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care for me
Carmen
Carmen, don't you care
Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem
Lying to herself cause her liquour's top shelf
It's alarming honestly how charming she can be
Fooling everyone, telling them she's having fun
She says you don't want to be like me
Don't wanna see all the things i've seen
I'm dying, i'm dying
She says you don't want to get this way
Famous, and dumb at an early age
Lying, I'm lying
The boys, the girls, they all like Carmen
She gives them butterflies, bats her cartoon eyes
She laughs like god, her mind's like a diamond
Audiotune lies
she's still shining
Like lightning, white lightning
Carmen, Carmen, staying up til morning
Only seventeen, but she walks the streets so mean
It's alarming truly how disarming you can be
Eating soft ice cream, coney island queen
She says you don't want to be like me
Looking for fun, get me high for free
I'm dying, i'm dying
She says you don't want to get this way
Street walking at night, and a star by day
It's tiring, tiring
The boys, the girls, they all like Carmen
She gives them butterflies, bats her cartoon eyes
She laughs like god, her mind's like a diamond
Audiotune lies
She's still shining
Like lightning, white lightning
Baby's all dressed up, with nowhere to go
That's the little story of the girl you know
Relying on the kindness of strangers
Tying cherry knots smiling doing party favours
Put your red dress on, put your lipstick on
Sing your song, song, now, the camera's on
And you're alive again
Tu as besoin de moi, tu as besoin de...
The boys, the girls, they all like carmen
She gives them butterflies, bats her cartoon eyes
She laughs like god, her mind's like a diamond
Audiotune lies
She's still shining
Like lightning, white lightning
Like lightning, white lightning....
Darling, darling, doesn't have a problem
(claude s.)
There was a girl who used to live
At the grey house by the bridge.
At the edge of the empty world.
Carmen's the name
That evokes the fear and shame
From the people that she left behind.
She had the spirit
To live her life so free
Although many people wanted to clip her wings.
She ran away,
She broke away the chains,
That they wrapped around her heart...
The people said, 'out of all the things she's done.
The worst one was just leaving without saying goodbye.'
The people said, 'out of all the things she's done
The worst one was just leaving without saying goodbye.'
(oh,oh,oh...)
(oh,oh,oh...)
Carmen,
The voices cry out.
Carmen,
The voices die out
Carmen,
The voices cry out.
Carmen,
The voices die out.
(oh,oh,oh...)
(oh,oh,oh...)
Carmen...
(Anderson/Berenyi)
Carmen tells me what she's done
Says she's having fun
Wants to be a mom
Copper hair and golden smile
Sparkles all the while
But life can be a trial
Carmen's in a world of pain
Don't cry now for yesterday
Babys' gone but she's okay
Carmen tells me where she's been
Nightmares that she's seen
Makes me want to scream
Hear the things that she's been through
Grey and black and blue
Life can be so cruel
Sit down here and take a drink
Tell me about everything
And he shrugs and then he winks again
Chocolate box and photograph
Life is hard and life is tough
Carmen smiles and then she laughs again
It's time we started heading home now
I've made mistakes along the way
It makes no sense but I'm okay now
Its happened again
I guess I'll live another day
Sit down here and take a drink
Tell me about everything
And he shrugs and then he winks again
Chocolate box and photograph
Life is hard and life is tough
Carmen smiles and then she laughs again

Verse:
Hey girl,
als wir in deinem Raum waren
und uns verliebt in die Augen sahen,
damals sagtest du mein verrückter Sex, kostet Extra. (ohh)
Uhh girl,
mein Kumpel will mich zu warnen, dann
nennt er dich Carmen die Samenbank.
Ich geb ihm 2-3 Kinnhaken, nur für dich. (oohh)
Bridge:
Du hast gesagt, dass du mich magst,

Für dich würd ich sterben Carmen,

Verse:
Oh Carmen du Wunder.
Mein Samen läuft grad an deinen Haaren herunter.
Oh Carmen

Have been within your tender sights
You were a woman, was I a man
Your eyes said, “Take me” and I took your hand
And darlin’, I love you
Too much to love you
Carmen
I’ll make you more than human
Hoo, Carmen
I’ll put you on a mountain
So high above me
Carmen
Oh, maybe had I touched you
But Carmen
My love made you untouchable
How could you love me
Days have come and days have gone
I’ve got someone and we get on
Tell her I love her there in the night
But it’s just a shadow I’m holding tight
I never had you
And I’ll never have you
Oh, Carmen
I’ll make you more than human
Hoo, Carmen
I’ll put you on a mountain
So high above me
Carmen
Oh, maybe had I touched you
But Carmen
My love made you untouchable
How could you love me
Oh, darlin’, I love you
Too much to love you
Whoa, Carmen
I’ll make you more than human
Hoo, Carmen
I’ll put you on a mountain
So high above me

Oh, maybe had I touched you

Liebe ist wie ein wilder Vogel
wer den will zähmen
hat es schwer
ganz umsonst wirst du nach ihm rufen
wenn er nicht will
kommt er nicht her.
Nichts zu wollen mit Drohn und Bitten
kein Schmeicheln hilft und keine Wut
grad der and're ist gern gelitten
obwohl er schweigt
bin ich ihm gut.
gut! Ja
gut! Ja
nur Mut!
Die Liebe gleicht Zigeunerart
für sie ist keinerlei Gesetz gemacht
auch wenn du mich nicht liebst:
ich lieb' dich
und lieb' ich dich
nimm dich in acht!
Auch wenn du mich nicht liebst
auch wenn du mich nicht liebst:
ich lieb dich!
Und wenn ich liebe
wirklich liebe
gib acht auf dich!
Glaubst den Vogel du schon gefangen
ein Flügelschlag entführt ihn dir;
Liebe läßt dich vergebens bangen
doch bangst du nicht mehr
ist sie hier.
Sie umkreist dich zu allen Stunden
sie naht
entflieht
naht wieder sich;
die du halten willst ist verschwunden
und eh du sie hast
hat sie dich!
Auch du
du! Grad du
hör zu:
Die Liebe gleicht Zigeunerart
für sie ist keinerlei Gesetz gemacht;
auch wenn du mich nicht liebst:
ich lieb dich
und lieb ich dich
nimm dich in acht!
Auch wenn du mich nicht liebst
auch wenn du mich nicht liebst:
ich lieb dich!
Und wenn ich liebe
wirklich liebe

senza dogmi né tabù incrociammo i sentimenti
e ne uscimmo vincitori come fossimo due geni
Ne parlammo in poche ore,
Here we are, servicing these dogs and plants, house-
sitting in the valley for your aunt. We're laughing
because this is the last place we should be. We search
the shelves. There is nothing we can eat. And all of
these shampoos are animal-tested, too. There goes our
dream of perfumed heads to compliment these pristine
beds. Carmen I never thought that this would be so hard.
I mean, we both came from these luxuries. But, Carmen,
you were right. This is our life. The rice has all gone
cold and the record stopped an hour ago. And late at
