Oct. 10, or the Double Ten Day, is the National Day
of Republic of China.
In recent years, many mainlanders have chosen this day to
celebrate. We will take a look at the reason why.
A netizen, Poet Wu Hao, issued a post on Weibo on Oct. 2 wee
hours: Many people in my circle of friends are dazzling with
today's "National Day",
but I think today is the motherland’s Good Friday.
It is on this day, our nation completely lost its soul and roots.
Oct. 10, Double Ten, is our motherland's birthday.
I hope one day we can justifiably celebrate this day!
A Hunan netizen stated: Double Ten is coming, although I am
in the seriously troubled red continent,
but I yearn for the Blue Sky and White Sun (ROC flag).
Bless Taiwan, Bless the ROC! Happy National Day!
Anhui democratic activist Shen Liangqing: "It was an
expression of discontent to the regime that I do not agree with you,
the one-party dictatorship People's Republic of China,
and recognition of the Republic of China (ROC),
which, after all, was founded on the basic idea of constitution,
and Taiwan has also realized the democratization.
The recognition of Oct. 10, Double Ten Day, in fact,
represents people’s call for democracy and democratization."
Hunan activist Ou Biaofeng: "ROC has been democratized,
but mainland is still under totalitarian rule.
That should be reason enough why the people are in favor of the
ROC. The Internet has brought the public’s consciousness."
Last Oct. 9, there were Internet users in mainland issuing
notice to celebrate Double Ten Day.
On the 10th, netizens of Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Shanghai,
Beijing and other places organized dinner events.
Some netizens wore the flag of Blue Sky and White Sun
to the party, and some of them sang the national anthem of ROC.
BBC Chinese pointed out that this reflects the widespread
surge of nostalgia prior to the time of 1949
when Kuomintang was ruling.
And this trend has been very popular this past decade.
So why are there so many mainlanders missing the times
of ROC before 1949?
Former Hebei People's Radio Editor, Zhu Xinxin: "The history
of the ROC in mainland has taught people that there was a
fundamental constitution,
judiciary independence, private education, private media,
and plenty of freedom to the people.
So we miss that time. This respect for the Republic also shows
the dissatisfaction with reality.
On the Double Ten, people commemorate the republic as a
yearning for freedom and democracy,
and an expression of dissatisfaction with the
Communist dictatorship."
A BBC report also mentioned that, to emphasize the 1949 seizure
of power and the legitimacy of the ruling party,
the CCP had referred to the Republic as "an evil of the old society."
But after the Cultural Revolution, out of the need for a United
Front, working towards Taiwan,
the regime relaxed its grip of control connected to the history
of the Republic of China,
especially studies on the anti-Japanese war, to some extent.
The Communist regime had previously claimed that the KMT
was not anti-Japanese, but the CCP was.
After 1980, while continually claiming to be the backbone
of the anti-Japanese war,
the regime began to allow the media to issue reports about
the achievements of the KMT military.
Zhu Xinxin: "The CCP wanted to win over the KMT
and Taiwan,
it had to let go of control of the history involving
the KMT,
and let the people see the ROC also as part of China
and a part of the history, and can not be completely fragmented.
The complete fragmentation is equivalent to admitting
an independent Taiwanese KMT.
That’s why it wanted to include the KMT’s history in scope
of a larger Chinese history,
so it had to free up certain space for everyone to understand
this part of history."
The report revealed, that the consequences of doing so, are
unexpected to the Communist regime.
People used to learn from textbooks about the "sparrow war",
"mine warfare", "Tunnel Warfare" that beat the Japanese army,
but the KMT’s "Battle of Shanghai", "Taierzhuang victory,"
China Expeditionary Force to go to Burma and so on,
have deeply astonished the mainlanders.
In order to reverse the negative consequences of the United
Front and relaxed propaganda control,
recently, the CCP propaganda department set the tone.
They referred to the academic researchers uncovering, as the
historical truth, hidden with "historical nihilism,"
and deceptive, therefore, must be suppressed.
However, a BBC report pointed out, everything is too late.
The diverse history and national identity have been formed.
In the foreseeable future, the mainlanders will continue
their commemoration of the Republic prior to 1949,
as an expression of their dissatisfaction with the Communists.
