They Were Not Divided 1950 War Film Edward Underdown, Ralph Clanton, Helen Cherry This wartime drama recounts the training process of the British Tank Corps. The story concentrates on two recruits: Englishman Philip (Edward Underdown) and American David (Ralph Clanton). After a grueling training period and a long, frustratingly uneventful encampment on British soil, Philip and David are shipped to the Front. Both men have a rendezvous with destiny during the German offensive at Ardennes. R.S.M. Brittain etches a chilling portrayal of a merciless drill sergeant, while the splendidly mustached Michael Trubshawe is equally effective as a by-the-book major. Since there must be a romantic subplot, it is fortunate indeed that the heroes' ladies are played by two charming and talented actresses, Helen Cherry and Stella Andrews

This romantic drama, co-written and directed by former Gainsborough Pictures kingpin Leslie Arliss, stars Edward Underdown as a man under uncomfortable scrutiny from the three women who know him best: his bitter, soon-to-be-ex wife, his recent, flighty, paramour and his lovesick personal assistant. Writer/Director John Huston’s Beat the Devil stars Humphrey Bogart as Billy Dannreuther, the front man for a group of swindlers stranded in an Italian port town, scheming to take ownership of uranium-rich land in Africa. Also stranded is a naive British couple, Mr. and Mrs. Chelm (Edward Underdown and Jennifer Jones.) Flirtations and a web of lies ensue among the group, testing romantic loyalty and allegiances among them. The last of six collaborations between Huston and Bogart, Beat the Devil evokes an effortless wit and charm found only in classic film gems like this.

Undoubtedly one of the most peculiar films to appear from a major director and star in the 1950s is John Huston's Beat the Devil (1953). Produced by Humphrey Bogart's Santana Productions, the film was unlike anything being released by the major studios, and even today is a fascinating gem of cinematic chutzpah. Synopsis: A quartet of international crooks -- Peterson, O'Hara, Ross and Ravello -- is stranded in Italy while their steamer is being repaired. With them are the Dannreuthers. The six are headed for Africa, presumably to sell vacuum cleaners but actually to buy land supposedly loaded with uranium. They are joined by others who apparently have similar designs. Producer/Director: John Huston Screenplay: Truman Capote and John Huston Based on a novel by James Helvick Cinematography: Oswald Morris Production Design: Wilfred Shingleton Music: Franco Mannino Principal Cast: Humphrey Bogart (Billy Dannreuther), Jennifer Jones (Gwendolen Chelm), Gina Lollobrigida (Maria Dannreuther), Robert Morley (Petersen), Peter Lorre (O'Hara), Edward Underdown (Harry Chelm), Ivor Barnard (Major Ross), Marco Tulli (Ravello), Bernard Lee (C.I.D. Inspector).

The science deniers who seek to spread doubt about evolution, climate change and vaccines are not alone in the spreading of bogus information. A new breed of history deniers is rewriting the American story to fit their religion's agenda. Revisionists like former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee seek to reframe the Framers as good Christians seeking to create the newly United States of Jesus. So are we a Christian Nation since the U.S. is predominantly Christian? Are we then a female nation since we are 52.4% female? Does Christianity make the U.S. great? Secular activists Ed Buckner and Jim Underdown will provide lively criticism on the revisionist arguments people - including the Supreme Court - use to evade the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. Dr. Buckner is a longtime secular activist, former president of American Atheists, and past executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism. He's written a number of books, including Fundamentals of Extremism: The Christian Right in America, and In Freedom We Trust: An Atheist Guide to Religous Liberty. Underdown is executive director of the Center for Inquiry-Los Angeles and the founder of the Independent Investigations Group. Both are planning a new book on this subject soon. Two American GIs are the only survivors of a unit wiped out in a battle with Japanese troops on an isolated island. The two, who don't like each other, find try to put aside their differences in order to evade the Japanese and survive. 10,000 men attack--only two got through! This is an ultra-low budget WWII films that was made during the post-war period. However, "Battle of Blood Island" manages to be entertaining despite its many shortcomings. The biggest problem with the film is probably the title. There really isn't any battle--at least not that you'll see in this action-less action picture. When the story begins, a small group of US Marines have already been killed as they were trying to take this small Pacific island (though the film was actually made in Puerto Rico). Two manage to survive...but one just barely. The healthy guy saves the wounded one and they hide from the tiny occupying Japanese force through the first half of the film. Then, a very odd thing happens. When the two soldiers have mustered up the nerve to attack the dozen or so occupants, just before they do so, the Japanese soldiers obligingly kill themselves--apparently they just found out they lost the war and decided to commit mass suicide. Now the two men realize that although they will indeed survive, perhaps no one will ever come to rescue them--after all, the island is small and the Americans probably assumed the entire unit was wiped out in the earlier attack. This is a pretty novel idea and without a working radio, I am sure there must been a few cases like this at the end of the war. The relationship between the two men makes up an interesting second half of the film. I especially was intrigued by what I thought was a gay subtext late in the film when the one healthy guy did NOT try to communicate with the American ships passing by--making you wonder if he really liked the idea of spending the rest of his life with the other man! But, sadly, the film didn't really follow up on this....making you wonder WHY the healthy guy didn't try to signal the ship. A gay love interest seems to be the only answer. But, despite this, the film still is different and pretty well acted. Battle of Blood Island (1960) Full Length War Films

The Unknown War The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force, the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during 1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives. On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks. In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war. The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives. Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming. The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War, which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own that would tell the real story of the War in the East. The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect" of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the world from fascism. Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front. Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union." Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about the Soviet role in WW2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE CONTENT IN THIS VIDEO: All the content belong to their respectful owners. Terence Alan Patrick Seán "Spike" Milligan KBE (16 April 1918 – 27 February 2002) was a British comedian, writer, musician, poet, playwright, soldier and actor. His early life was spent in India, where he was born, but the majority of his working life was spent in the United Kingdom. He became an Irish citizen in 1962 after the British government declared him stateless. He was the co-creator, main writer and a principal cast member of The Goon Show, performing a range of roles including the popular Eccles.
Milligan wrote and edited many books, including Puckoon and his seven-volume autobiographical account of his time serving during the Second World War, beginning with Adolf Hitler: My part in his downfall. He is also noted as a popular writer of comical verse; much of his poetry was written for children, including Silly Verse for Kids (1959). After success with the ground-breaking British radio programme, The Goon Show, Milligan translated this success to television with Q5, a surreal sketch show which is credited as a major influence on the members of Monty Python's Flying Circus.
