Conchita Wurst sings for equality in the European Parliament

Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst performed in front of the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday, as part of a campaign to fight discrimination and support equal rights across the EU. Wurst gave an hour-long concert attended by a pleased crowd, who stood under the heavy Belgian rain cheering the bearded artist. Seen as a symbol for the LGBT groups, the Austrian singer said she wants to spread a message of “tolerance and respect”. “Not everyone is shown respect, and this is why today I am going to use this opportunity to recall the past from which we have come and to show how important it is to live respect,” Wurst said. Wurst was invited by a group of MEPs from different political parties and led by Austrian Green MEP Ulrike Lunacek, the first openly lesbian politician in the parliament. Lunacek said that Wurst “has an important political message” to spread across the continent. “Conchita Wurst has a very important political message, that doesn't have anything to do with parties or regular work in the party. It has to do with what the EU stands for: Equal rights, fundamental rights, the right to live your life without fear, for LGBT and other minorities,” said Lunacek. The Austrian diva became a sensation around Europe after she won the Eurovision singing contest in Denmark earlier in May with the song “Raise like a Phoenix”.

Η Επιτροπή Συνταγματικών Υποθέσεων του Ευρωκοινοβουλίου έκανε δεκτή την πρότασή μου και μου ανέθεσε έκθεση για να διερευνηθούν οι συνέπειες της δικονομικής διακυβέρνησης στο όλο σύστημα θεσμών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Με λίγα λόγια θα εξεταστούν στο πλαίσιο αυτής της έκθεσης, οι συνέπειες και για την οικονομία και για την κοινωνία και για την πολιτική νομιμοποίηση της Ευρώπης - όλων των διαστάσεων της ευρωπαϊκής οικονομικής διακυβέρνησης και φυσικά με έμφαση στο χρέος. Το χρέος γιατί είναι ευρωπαϊκή υπόθεση: Δεν είναι μόνο μια μυλόπετρα στο λαιμό της ελληνικής κοινωνίας και της ελληνικής οικονομίας, αλλά απειλεί να σπάσει την Ευρώπη στα δύο, γιατί αν το δούμε με βάση τους αριθμούς, τα ελλείμματα των χωρών του Νότου δεν αποτελούν τίποτα παραπάνω από την άλλη πλευρά, των πλεονασμάτων που μαζεύει η Γερμανία. Αυξάνουν οι κοινωνικές ανισότητες και μεταξύ των χωρών, και στο εσωτερικό κάθε κοινωνίας - κερδισμένη μπορεί να φαίνεται ότι είναι η Γερμανία σε σχέση με τις άλλες χώρες, και είναι - αλλά οι Γερμανοί εργαζόμενοι, τουλάχιστον οι φτωχότεροι από αυτούς χάνουν, δεν κερδίζουν. Επομένως είναι βασικό ζήτημα για την Ευρώπη να αλλάξει συνολικά προσανατολισμό, να πάψει να ακολουθεί τις νεοφιλελεύθερες πολιτικές λιτότητας που φρενάρουν την ανάπτυξη και διαλύουν τις κοινωνίες και η αντιμετώπιση του θέματος του χρέους είναι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα ζητήματα προς την κατεύθυνση αυτή.

In 2010 Mark Turner's son, and his friend, were arrested by Hungarian Police and extradited to a Hungarian Jail, with no way for the British Legal system to stop the arrest. The European arrest warrant (EAW) was conceived in the shocked atmosphere after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on 11 September, 2001. In Britain, it came into force in 2004. Designed to fast-track suspects of serious crime and terrorism to face trial, critics say it is being used instead for comparatively minor cases, bypassing traditional safeguards, and leaving citizens of one country at the mercy of criminal procedures in another. More than 9,000 EAWs were issued Europe-wide in 2007. In this case The Hungarian side deny the British complaint that they misused the extradition procedure: "Hungarian law is in complete harmony with the framework proposal of the European commission governing the issuing of the European arrest warrant," said Gabriella Skoda, a spokeswoman for the metropolitan prosecutor's office in Budapest. "In Hungary, you can issue a European arrest warrant at the investigation stage, without charges being issued by the prosecution." "The warrant is an ill-thought-out, ill-considered and inappropriate piece of law, and now needs to be looked at again," said Lord Dartmouth, a member of the European parliament for south-west England for Ukip. Party political wrangling, in both Ljubljana and Brussels, was holding up a new nomination from Slovenia for its seat on the 28-member European Commission after Alenka Bratusek withdrew as vice president-designate for energy. Aides to Juncker said the process could disrupt a timetable by which the new executive is due to take office on Nov. 1. At a single plenary vote scheduled for Oct. 22, parliament must approve the whole Commission in order for it to take over.
