A patient suspected of suffering from the deadly Ebola virus left quarantine in Monrovia to search for food at a local market. The video shows him being chased and finally being caught by doctors. He is forced back into an ambulance while scared and angry crowds watched on. One local woman said care for Ebola patients was so inadequate they were not even being fed. “The patients are hungry, they are starving. No food, no water. The government need to do more,” she said. More than 1,550 people in four West African countries have died from the virus since the outbreak was first recorded in March. Liberia has the highest infection rate with around 700 deaths out of 1,327 suspected and confirmed cases. What is in the news today? Around 150 Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have arrived in Turkey. The forces will travel through the country to Syria, where they aim to help defend the besieged town of Kobani. A military convoy carrying weapons, including artillery, is also being driven to the border town. For more than a month, Kobani has been under threat from insurgents from the self-proclaimed Islamic State, also known as ISIL. During this period, more than 800 people have been killed in the town. So far, ISIL has defied US-led airstrikes, but it is hoped the extra resources will help Kurds already fighting in Kobani to repel the jihadists’ advance. Almost 200,000 Syrian Kurds fled across the border to Turkey after militants threatened to massacre those defending Kobani, prompting a call to arms from Kurds across the region. The Iraqi Kurdish region’s parliament responded and voted to deploy some Peshmerga to Syria. Under pressure from the west, Turkey agreed to let them travel through its territory. However, the government is still refusing to allow Turkish Kurds from the separatist PKK group to cross the border to fight.

http://democracynow.org - The governors of New York and New Jersey are facing federal pressure to reverse new quarantine rules on medical workers returning from West Africa. Under the policy, arriving passengers with a risk of Ebola exposure will be placed in a 21-day quarantine. White House officials lobbied New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the weekend, saying the rules would discourage workers from joining the Ebola response in West Africa. On Sunday night, Cuomo announced a slight easing of the restrictions, saying the workers can be quarantined at home. A nurse named Kaci Hickox became the first health worker isolated under the rules after returning to New Jersey from Sierra Leone. Hickox has been placed in an isolated tent inside a Newark hospital despite testing negative for Ebola. She has threatened to fight her 21-day quarantine in court, saying the order violates her constitutional rights. We are joined by Carissa Guild, a nurse with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) who has just returned from Guinea, where she took part in the Ebola response effort. The Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket launch failed on Tuesday evening (Oct. 28) after exploding in midair six seconds after blasting off, according to NASA. The rocket was set to send a CRS-3 Cygnus cargo spacecraft into space to resupply the International Space Station at 6:22 p.m. ET from the Wallops Flight Facility along the Atlantic Ocean. The Cygnus was carrying some 5,000 pounds of supplies and experiments, CNN reports. About a third of the cargo was material for scientific investigations, while another third included supplies for the space station’s crew, including more than 1,300 pounds of food. There was also classified equipment on board in the form, according to Orbital. According to Time magazine, the booster made it only 200 feet off the ground before the rocket exploded, causing the rocket to fall back to earth. CNN reported the explosion and flames covered a roughly 100-yard area around the launch site. The launch marked the first flight of the upgraded Antares 130 rocket, which was equipped with a more powerful second stage to accommodate larger future payloads, according to NASA. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Italian President Napolitano to testify at Mafia trial
Italian President Napolitano to testify at Mafia trial

  • Updated: 28 Oct 2014
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano is to give evidence at a high-profile anti-Mafia trial in Rome. Prosecutors are investigating possible collusion between ministers, police chiefs and the Mafia to end a period of violence in the early 1990s. President Napolitano, 89, denies any knowledge of the negotiations. Opposition politicians have called for his evidence not to be held behind closed doors when the trial moves from Palermo to the capital on Tuesday. There is no suggestion that he was involved in any wrongdoing. Prosecutors are investigating a dramatic period of Mafia violence in the 1990s - marked by car bombings and assassinations. They accuse the state of making an illegal deal with the Mafia to bring the violence to an end. The BBC's James Reynolds in Rome says that prosecutors believe that President Napolitano may have been told of this deal in recent years and want to ask him exactly what he knew. In October last year, however, he wrote a letter to the court saying he had "no useful knowledge" to give the trial, but would have been happy to give evidence if he had. Prosecutors allege that government officials sought to make an agreement with the Mafia after bombings in 1993, reportedly promising less harsh jail conditions in exchange for calling off the bombing campaign. Two leading anti-mafia prosecutors died in devastating explosions in Sicily. A former interior minister, Nicola Mancino, is on trial for allegedly negotiating with the Mafia after the attacks in Rome, Florence and Milan. Mr Mancino denies the charges. The court ruled last year that President Napolitano could not be asked about conversations he had with Mr Mancino in 2011 and 2012. Evidence from an intercepted phone-call was destroyed after an application from Mr Napolitano. The former interior minister is on trial along with several other people including two jailed Mafia bosses, Toto Riina and Benardo Provenzano. A final verdict in the case is not expected for at least two more years.

The Orbital Sciences Corp.\'s Antares rocket launch failed on Tuesday evening (Oct.

The BBC\'s James Reynolds in Rome says that prosecutors believe that President Napolitano may have been told of this deal in recent years and want to ask him exactly what he knew.

In October last year, however, he wrote a letter to the court saying he had \
