Brandi Carlile (born June 1, 1981) is an American alternative country and folk rock singer-songwriter Her 2007 album The Story was produced by T-Bone Burnett.
Carlile is best known for the eponymous song from the The Story album. "The Story", the song, was used in a General Motors television commercial aired on American and Canadian television showcasing the car company's new line-up of more fuel-efficient cars. Due to the ad airing heavily during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the song increased in downloads. The song was also used in the 2008 commercial for Super Bock, the most popular beer in Portugal, which led to the song reaching number 1 and the album The Story reaching number 4 on the Portuguese charts. "The Story" was also used in a montage of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno during the opening and closing of the Ohio State-Penn State football game on ABC on October 25, 2008, and was also used in a 2010 Tracker television commercial that aired on South African television. "The Story" is currently being used on Connecticut Channel 3 during promotions for the local news. Aside from "The Story" (specifically the cover version by Sara Ramirez), two other Carlile songs (this time from her third album titled Give Up the Ghost) were used for two more episodes of the TV series Grey's Anatomy.
I'm just a stranger here, despite your everything
I'm not attached to your world of disease
Like father always said, and I can only agree
Son they will hate you because they always hated me
And even though I feel alone
I know that I could never be
If it's a choice between this veil of ecstasy
And all the lonely suffering of seeing this so clearly
If I've said it once I'll say it twice I'll say it for all eternity
I'll find all the comfort that I need inside this bleeding
And even though I feel alone
You know that I could never be
Nobody knows
Nobody cares
Nobody sees outside our safe haven
Together we are so, so ugly with rejection
But to our, our eyes we, we're the ones shimmering
I've unplugged the wires from your spine
At first you'll be afraid
But we will be so content
And we
Will live.
Again
And we will live again
(Alone and so content)
And we will live again
(Alone and so content)
Just crawl across this desert heat
And become tragic with me
And now that we are not alone
You know that we could never be
Nobody knows
Nobody cares
Nobody sees outside our safe haven
And we will live again
(Alone and so content)
And we will live again
Whoa-oh Safe Haven
Lost boy cannot feel
Though you try and you try and you try
You cannot feel
Whoa-oh Safe Haven
Lost girl cannot feel
Though you try and you try and you try
You cannot feel
Whoa-oh Safe Haven
(Turn up this beat up stereo, play it down all soft and slow)
(sweet and lowdown)
It's five o'clock, I find your house.
The bus was long, the sun is up.
Your place is wrecked, its smell is stale
I walk through trash, you're up the stairs
You're on the roof
You said you'd be
Crawl through the window
You smile at me
It's safe to say here, it's safe to say
Relax, slow down, take a breath and breathe
Whoa-oh Safe Haven
this time it's all over again
destroyed again and let down again
built up again to be torn down again
this time it's all over again
built up again to be torn down again
you became a memory awkward in your presence
that state of mind separation from devotion
I have no regrets except for everything
if I offered eternity you'd still expect more
run and run you'll never run far enough
[Townspeople]
This was a safe haven,
Now it's gone, dangers on it's way
Evil can spread out,
Like a stain, and darken all the day
Boundaries wont protect you,
Locks and bolts won't work the way they should
For the sake of all the children,
Track it down, boot it out for good
They say he killed and killed,
No mercy, no remorse, no shame
They say he'll strike again,
No fear and no hope and no end
This was a safe haven,
Bring it back make it that again
The children meet Amos and ask if he is going to the revival meeting. He asks
Swallow what her secret is and she replies that she cannot tell him.
The children play and sing Long overdue for a miracle & When children rule
the world...
Walking with you in these wind-swept fields
Does not keep me honest when honest does feel
The furthest most reach from our fingers and I
I look to the stars and they look to your eyes
ALL ALONE
For trumpets are sounding in the distance tonight
And ravens keep winding to their endless sights
To the furthest most reach from our fingers and I
I look to the stars and they look into your eyes
For surely I know, if I flee here tonight
That I'd be alone, a singular fright
And I'm sure that I'd crumble and crease in the weight
It's safe in your arms, in your arms I will stay
ALL ALONE
Towers will fall and countries will, too
With generals left not knowing what to do
And pleading to their Gods with prayers much too late
They will look to your eyes and I'll not look away
For surely I know, if I flee here tonight
That I'd be alone, a singular fright
And I'm sure that I'd crumble and crease in the weight
It's safe in your arms, in your arms I will stay
Oh surely I'd crumble and crease in the weight
It's safe in your arms, in your arms I will stay
Oh then maybe we'll lay down, we'll lay down
Oh in the safe haven that we've made, that we've made
Walking in the pouring rain
Thought of you driving me insane
How time has come and gone
Seven years of singing songs
I'll find an end to all of this
I'll find an end to this
And we'll say we were young and full of hope
And we never really did what we're told
And we'll say we were dumb and all alone
But we're still chasing the sun
Chasing the sun
Through the night, trying to stay awake
Working hard to make a way
So pack your things and we'll run away
We'll find a place for you and me
I'll find an end to all of this
I'll find an end to this
And we'll say we were young and full of hope
And we never really did what we're told
And we'll say we were dumb and all alone
But we're still chasing the sun
Some days you've got to move on, move on
Some days you've got to hold on, hold on
Some days you've got to try to remember
Some day you've got to try to forget
And we'll say we were young and full of hope
And we never really did what we're told
And we'll say we were dumb and all alone
But we're still chasing the sun
And we'll say we were young and full of hope
And we never really did what we're told
And we'll say we were dumb and all alone
But we're still chasing the sun
One day we'll fade but we'll never forget
That we lived without regret
And we were young, and proud and we raised our voices loud
But we're still chasing the sun
Chasing the sun
We're chasing the sun
We'll find an end to all of this
