John Locke

John Locke FRS (/ˈlɒk/; 29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.

Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as Hume, Rousseau, and Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception.

John Locke (MP)

John Locke (1805 – 28 January 1880) was an English barrister, author and Liberal Party politician.

The only son of John Locke, a surveyor of Herne Hill, he was educated at Dulwich College. Reading law at Trinity College, Cambridge, he left with an MA in 1832 and was called to the Bar from the Inner Temple in 1833.

Between 1845 to 1857 he was a common pleader of the City of London, and counsel to the Inland Revenue. He was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Southwark at the general election in April 1857, and held the seat until his death. He was mainly active in causes for the working class and local government, introducing a bill that give witnesses in criminal cases the right to affirm as in civil cases.

He died in February 1880 and was buried in the catacombs at West Norwood Cemetery.

John Locke (Massachusetts)

John Locke (February 14, 1764 – March 29, 1855), was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. He was born in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, and attended Andover Academy and Dartmouth College, eventually graduating from Harvard University in 1792. He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar and began practicing law in Ashby in 1796.

Political career

He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1804, 1805, 1813, and 1823, and was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1820. He was elected to the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth U.S. Congresses (March 4, 1823 – March 3, 1829); He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1828. Locke was then a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1830, and of the State executive council in 1831. At this time he also resumed the practice of law.

Writing

He wrote two "essays" about how the Articles were wrong, and was ridiculed greatly by peers.

Death

Locke died in Boston, Massachusetts on March 29, 1855; he is interred in Lowell Cemetery in Lowell.

John Locke (poet)

John Locke (1847–1889) was an Irish writer and Fenian activist, exiled to the United States, and most famous for writing "Dawn on the Irish Coast", also known as "The Exiles Return, or Morning on the Irish coast".

Early life

Locke was born in 1847 in Minauns,Callan, County Kilkenny. When in school he used to write verses of poetry on slips of paper and went on to have his first of many poems published in 1863 at the age of 16 years. He is best remembered in Callan for his poem "The Calm Avonree", where a plaque on the Town Hall building is dedicated to the patriot poet. His many poems included "The Old Abbey Well", "The Burial of Sarsfield" and "Twilight on Slievenamon". However, his most famous poem was "Dawn on the Irish Coast", written in 1877 and later included in school books by the Irish Christian Brothers whose founder Edmund Rice was also born in Callan. This poem under the title of "Morning on the Irish coast" is printed in Volume 5 of Irish Literature edited by Justin McCarthy and published by John D Morris, Philadelphia. Under the title "Dawn on the Irish Coast" it is printed in Werner's Readings no. 3, published by E S Werner & Co., New York.

John Locke (musician)

John Tilden Locke (born September 25, 1943 Los Angeles, California - died August 4, 2006 Ojai, California) was an American rock keyboardist and a member of the rock group Spirit. Locke was also a member of the band Nazareth in the early 1980s.

Career

John Locke has always been a highly respected musician, who was born into a family full of talent: His father was a classical violinist and his mother, still alive, sang operas, besides being a composer.

Death

John died at the age of 62, a victim of cancer.

Despite early interest, his career and most of his life involved no writing, focusing his energy instead on selling insurance and investing in real estate, where he made most of his fortune.
