21. The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000: Crisis of the Carolingians
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) In this lecture, Professor Freedman discusses the crisis and decline of Charlemagne's empire. Increasingly faced with external threats -- particularly the Viking invasions -- the Carolingian Empire ultimately collapsed from internal causes, because its rulers were unable effectively to manage such a large empire. In the absence of strong social infrastructure and an idea of loyalty to the ruler, government servants strove to make their positions hereditary and nobles sought to set up independent kingdoms. Although it only lasted for a short time, the Carolingian Empire helped shape the face of Europe, especially through the partitions of the Treaty of Verdun which created territories roughly equivalent to France and Germany. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Hall of Shame ("Hall of Fame" Parody)
Hall of Shame ("Hall of Fame" Parody)
Here is a historical parody about the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at the Paris Peace Conference after WWI based on "Hall of Fame" originally performed by The Script ft. will.i.am. Lyric subtitles and interactive transcript are available. Lyrics: [Spoken] After all this war we must come together To plan for new peace And punish those who began the terror And place them in the Hall of Shame. [Verse 1] We are Yeah I said it We are We are League of Nations Pledge your allegiance Taking German property All German everything German Troops, German Planes All German everything And we take their submarines no more Anschluss mergers We'd get more in depth If you Frenchies really real enough Taking back the Saarland give it back later But for now let us get back to this treaty Got a couple Baltic states, gonna go and make them free Gotta make them Germans pay for all this war debris Yeah I'm talkin' six comma nine zeros dot zero what up Wilson runnin' circles round Paris 14 point up [Chorus] Standing in the Hall of Shame And league knows who's to blame 'Cause France wants to take an aim It will lead to many reclaims G 'll be on the walls of the Hall of Shame [Verse 2] Verdun Yeah I said it We're done You can call me Wilson work for the long run with the 14 point plan Self-determination Treaty of Versailles It's the return of freedom Peace man (Auh! Auh!) And blame all of the Germans in Article 2-3-1 (Ah!) Weimar Republic forced to give up all its Colonies away, as mandates, We got a table full of power That we use to set things straight (Yeah!) And limit German domain demobilize the Rhine Take Alsace and Lorraine (Yeah!) Whole Europe now fixed So my treaty lookin' like dictionary thick [Chorus] Standing in the Hall of Shame And league knows who's to blame 'Cause France wants to take an aim It will lead to many reclaims G 'll be on the walls of the Hall of Shame Treaty of Versailles Treaty of Versailles Treaty of Versailles Treaty of Versailles Standing in the Hall of Shame! [Verse 3] It's crazy how you can go from being potent to have your country all beaten and broken All of my land was not taken but stolen Used to formulate the land of new Poland Self-determinate citizens to the states That's the thing that Wilson really debates It ain't happening So we are on a crash course What you think the League for to stop any future wars? But I know what Congress is thinking All these senators won't sign nothing I could spend my whole life good will hunting Only good will come if Congress starts signing But I know that they all be rightwing 14 points, ungh... Free Trading Start Disarming Safe Sailing And we need to stop all future allying Protect the world against any communist left-wings I'm just tryin' to change the world for the bettering Germany Baby You need to start abiding But have we ever had peace without fighting? What's that, France? Baby, still scared? Free the Rhine. What? Let's declare The Anglo-French-American Treaty to appease Germans feeling like they runnin' But it's what we do for peace [Chorus] Standing in the Hall of Shame And league knows who's to blame 'Cause France wants to take an aim It will lead to many reclaims G 'll be on the walls of the Hall of Shame (Treaty of Versailles) Versailles will be the greatest Versailles will be the best (Treaty of Versailles) Versailles will put Germany down to rest (Treaty of Versailles) They will meet in Paris G won't beat the war (Treaty of Versailles) Wilson's got a plan early at Congress's door (Treaty of Versailles) You can meet the Big Four You can see George (Treaty of Versailles) You can block Clemenceau You can face Orlando (Treaty of Versailles) You can be like Wilson Come meet the League The Treaty of Versailles will leave the guilty Germans Standing in the Hall of Shame!
