Post-bop is a genre of small-combo jazz that evolved in the early to mid-1960s.
Post-bop is jazz from the mid-1960s onward that assimilates hard bop, modal jazz, avant-garde and free jazz without necessarily being immediately identifiable as any of the above.
According to musicologist Jeremy Yudkin, post-bop does not follow "the conventions of bop or the apparently formless freedom of the new jazz". He wrote in his definition of the subgenre:
Miles Davis' second quintet was active during 1965 to 1968 and featured pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and drummer Tony Williams. They recorded six studio albums that, according to All About Jazz's C. Michael Bailey, introduced post-bop: E.S.P. (1965), Miles Smiles (1967), Sorcerer (1967), Nefertiti (1968), Miles in the Sky (1968), and Filles de Kilimanjaro (1968).
Much "post-bop" was recorded on Blue Note Records. Key albums include Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter; The Real McCoy by McCoy Tyner; Out to Lunch by Eric Dolphy; Miles Smiles by Miles Davis; Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock; and Search for the New Land by Lee Morgan (an artist not typically associated with the post-bop genre). Most post-bop artists worked in other genres as well, with a particularly strong overlap with earlier hard bop.
Jazz is a music genre that originated from African American communities of New Orleans in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African American and European American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz spans a period of over a hundred years, encompassing a very wide range of music, making it difficult to define. Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation and the swing note, as well as aspects of European harmony, American popular music, the brass band tradition, and African musical elements such as blue notes and African-American styles such as ragtime. Although the foundation of jazz is deeply rooted within the black experience of the United States, different cultures have contributed their own experience to the music as well. Intellectuals around the world have hailed jazz as "one of America's original art forms".
Georg Breinschmid (born 25 April 1973 in Amstetten, Lower Austria), is an Austrian double bass player, composer and jazz musician.
Breinschmid studied classical double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna and substituted in various Viennese orchestras as a student. From 1994 to 1996 he played with the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, then with the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, touring Europe, America and Asia.
In 1999, Georg Breinschmid quit being a (well-paid) classical orchestra musician, playing pre-fabricated music, in favour of his all-important love: jazz music. He played with the Vienna Art Orchestra, with the Zipflo Weinrich Group and gave concerts with various other ensembles all over Europe. Charlie Mariano, Jasper van’t Hof, Adam Taubitz and Archie Shepp were among his international playmates, as well as Austrian jazz musicians like Harry Sokal, Thomas Gansch, Christian Muthspiel, and many others. He issued the CD Tanzen (Dancing) with singer Agnes Heginger in 2005, both (clearly) obviously enjoying themselves improvising and experimenting with voice and double bass. With violinist Benjamin Schmid (Beni Schmid), in cooperation with Biréli Lagrène and Stian Carstensen, Georg Breinschmid has revived the music of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt with his own original compositions.

By the mid 1960’s the rise of Free Jazz had shaken the very foundation of Jazz. So Mainstream Jazz had to somehow find a way to respond to the avant-garde – and this response was a genre called Post-bop. Post-bop mixes elements of bebop, hard-bop, modal and free jazz without necessarily being any one of these style. Post-bop was more or less invented by Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet, so a lot of what I’m going to say here relates directly to this group. The way that Post-bop responded to this attack by Free Jazz was with ambiguity – writ...
