Chess is a two-player board game played on a chessboard, a square checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. It is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide at home, in clubs, online, by correspondence, and in tournaments.
Each player begins the game with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns, each of these types of pieces moving differently. Pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces. The object of the game is to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by the voluntary resignation of one's opponent, which may occur when too much material is lost, or if checkmate appears unavoidable. A game may also result in a draw in several ways, where neither player wins. The course of the game is divided in three phases. The beginning of the game is called the opening (with the development of pieces). The opening yields to the phase called the middlegame. The last phase is the endgame, generally characterized by the disappearance of queens.
Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen (born 30 November 1990) is a Norwegian chess Grandmaster and chess prodigy who is currently the number-one ranked player in the world. In January 2010 he became the seventh player in history to be ranked number one in the world on the official FIDE rating list. His peak rating is 2835, the second highest in history, after Garry Kasparov.
On 26 April 2004 Carlsen became a Grandmaster at the age of &1000000000000001300000013 years, &10000000000000148000000148 days, making him the third-youngest Grandmaster in history. On 1 January 2010 the new FIDE rating list was published, and at the age of &1000000000000001900000019 years, &1000000000000003200000032 days, he became the youngest chess player in history to be ranked world number one, breaking the record previously held by Vladimir Kramnik. Carlsen was also the 2009 World blitz chess champion.
His performance at the September–October 2009 Nanjing Pearl Spring tournament has been described as one of the greatest in history and lifted him to an Elo rating of 2801, making him the fifth player to achieve a rating over 2800 – and aged 18 years 10 months at the time, by far the youngest to do so.
Fabiano Luigi Caruana (born July 30, 1992) is a Grandmaster and chess prodigy with dual citizenship of Italy and the United States.
On 15 July 2007 Caruana became a Grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months, 20 days – the youngest Grandmaster in the history of both Italy and the United States.
In the May 2012 FIDE list, he has an Elo rating of 2770, making him 8th in the world and Top World Junior.
Fabiano Caruana was born on July 30, 1992 in Miami, Florida of an Italian-American father and an Italian mother. At the age of 4 his family relocated from Miami, Florida to Park Slope, Brooklyn. Coincidentally, this was the same neighborhood where Bobby Fischer lived during his youth. At age 5, his chess talent was discovered in an after school chess program at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn. That same year he played his first tournament at the Polgar Chess Center in Queens, New York.
Up to the age of twelve, he lived and played in the United States, occasionally traveling to Europe and South America for tournaments.
Max Lange (August 7, 1832, Magdeburg – December 8, 1899, Leipzig) was a German chess player and composer.
In 1858–1864, he was an editor of the Deutsche Schachzeitung (German Chess Newsletter). He was a founder of Westdeutscher Schachbund (West German Chess Federation, WDSB), and an organizer of the 9th DSB–Congress (Kongress des Deutschen Schachbundes) at Leipzig 1894. He was second President of the German Chess Federation (DSB).
Max Lange won four Western German championships: thrice in Düsseldorf (1862, 1863, 1864), and at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) 1868 (7th WDSB–Congress). He also won at Hamburg 1868 (1st Congress of the North German Chess Federation). The statistical website Chessmetrics.com estimates that Lange was one of the top ten players in the world in the 1860s. He took an extended sabbatical from tournament chess from 1868 until his final appearance in the third DSB-Congress at Nuremberg 1883. Lange finished in a tie for 17th-19th place, which was last. His ability had clearly deteriorated as a result of his long layoff but Chessmetrics.com places him among the top 40 to 50 players in the world in the 1880s on the basis of this result.
Susan Polgar (born April 19, 1969, as Polgár Zsuzsanna and often known as Zsuzsa Polgár) is a Hungarian-American chess Grandmaster. She is an Olympic chess champion, a chess teacher, coach, writer and promoter and the head of the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) at Texas Tech University as well as the coach for the 2011 National Championship college chess team. She is the oldest of the famous "Polgár sisters": Zsuzsa, Zsófia, and Judit. Susan is perhaps most famous for being a child prodigy at chess, for being the first female to earn the Grandmaster title through tournament play, and for breaking a number of gender barriers in chess.
On the July 1984 FIDE Rating List, at the age of 15, she became the top ranked woman player in the world, and remained ranked in the top three for the next 23 years. She was also the first woman in history to break the gender barrier by qualifying for the 1986 "Men's" World Championship. She was the Women's World Chess Champion from 1996 to 1999. In October 2005 Polgar had an Elo rating of 2577, making her the second-ranked woman in the world at the time, after her sister Judit Polgár. Polgar went on to win ten Olympic medals (5 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze) and four Women's World Championships. She has not played in official competition since 2006.
chess is such a difficult game
there are so many pieces
so many squares where you can go
so few promises
never you mind all the others
anticipating your next move
i know it's hard cause you got a lot to do
street signs and traffic lights ever confusing me it's you
stop left, go right, no U-turn, where's the goddamn exit
never you mind all the others
influencing your next move
i know it's hard cause you got a lot to prove
lalalalalalala~
sex and drugs and rock n' roll
pieces by rocking for you
this puzzle can't be done wrong
so cover 'em while you can
never you mind all the others
aniticipating your next move
never you mind all the others
never you mind what they do
don't let them get you down cause it's there too
you'll be trapped forever under their shoe
here is the paper so go
i know it's hard cause you got a lot to do
[Intro: Samuel L. Jackson in "Fresh"]
Now what kinda player am I? Am I an offensive man or a defensive man?
That's right, I'm neither. I play my opponent
If he likes to attack, I force him to defend himself
If he's a cautious man, I draw him into dangerous waters
See, you get so frustrated playing defensive positions
you make stupid moves you would never make if you were thinking
When you come here boy, check that shit at the door
[Bridge]
I'm at the top of my game, cut the check
Somebody better king me, I'm the best
Let's play a game of checkers, better yet
The game don't love nobody, let's play chess
[Chorus]
I keep forgettin' we're not in love anymore
I keep forgettin' things will never be the same again
I keep forgettin' how you made that so clear
I keep forgettin' things will never be the same again
[Verse 1]
I got street knowlege, that's why I outsmart em all
Gotta play chess in the streets, it's the art of war
Rapper get robbed, they took the jewels off your neck
You call the person who you payin' to protect
He got all your jewelery back, more or less
But now you owe him more, you in debt
Guess who got you robbed
Why don't you take a wild guess
The person you pay to protect you, he playin' chess
Oil price high, buildings fall, government stressed
They need somebody to blame for all this mess
capture Sadam but ain't captured Bin Laden yet
That's cause he doesn't exist, they playin' chess
A DJ, he helps artists progress
But as soon as they get in position, they forget
So now he got his own artists on the set
They risin' straight to the top, they playin' chess
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Verse 2]
Life is like a game of chess, get it straight
You cheated on your wife, called it a mistake
I told her I hate to see a heart break
You feelin' bad, lemme take you on a date
I just took your queen right in front of your face
Now it's easy to get to the king, checkmate
One man's pain is another man's pleasure
He treat you like trash, I could treat you way better
'Cause one man's trash is another man's treasure
This is chess not checkers, chess not checkers
She don't love you no more, eat dinner out the fridge
+When a woman's fed up+, you see the difference kid
You try to deny it but you admit what you did
She know you better than yourself, there it is
Females are intelligent, that's the wisdom kid
They're built from the top down like a pyramid
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
Life is like a game of chess, get it straight
I made my first hit record, checkmate
I'ma do numbers on my release date
Here's another hit record, checkmate
You sold millions of records, but what's next?
You need a couple of bombs from funk flex
A diss record'll make everybody upset
But that'll make you hot, you playin' chess
Used to be an artist, but now you an exec
You signed a buncha wack artists at your desk
You make sure they wack so you can sound fresh
I guess they just your pawns, you playin' chess
Record labels, y'all signing acts right and left
He pop bottles and celebrate his success
Y'all put him on the shelf but told him he was next
He just a tax write-off, yall playin' chess
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
[Papoose]
I got my rooks on the chessboard, uh
I got my knights on the chessboard, uh
I got my bishops on the chessboard

SONG: Heaven help my Heart
If it were love I would give that love every second I had
and i do
did i know where he'd lead me to?
did i plan doing all of this for the love of a man?
well, i let it happen anyhow, and what i'm feeling now
has no easy explanation, reason plays no part.
heaven help my heart.
i love him too much,
suddenly my life my whole existence turning around a word a smile a
touch.
one of these days and it won't be long he'll know more about me than he
should
all my dreams will be understood,
no surprise, nothing more to learn from the look in my eyes.
don't you know that time is not my friend, i'll fight it to the end
hoping to keep the best of moments when the passion starts, heaven help
my heart.
the day that i find
suddenly i've run out of secrets suddenly i'm not always on his mind.
maybe it's best to love a stranger, well that's what i've done, heaven
help my heart.
heaven help my heart.

Nothing is so good it lasts eternallyPerfect situations must go wrongBut this has never yet prevented meFrom wanting far too much for far too longLooking back I could have played it differentlyWon a few more moments, who can tell? But it took time to understand the manNow at least I know I know him wellWasn't it good? (Oh so good)Wasn't he fine? (Oh so fine)Isn't it madness he won't be mineBut in the end he needs a little bitMore than me, more security (He needs his fantasy and freedom)I know him so wellNo one in your life is with you constantlyNo one is completely on your sideAnd though I move my world to be with himStill the gap between us is too wideLooking back I could have played it differently (Looking back I could have played things some other way)Learned about the man before I fell (I was just a little careless, maybe)But I was ever so much younger thenNow at least I know I know him wellWasn't it good? (Oh so good)Wasn't he fine? (Oh so fine)Isn't it madnessHe won't be mine?Didn't I knowHow it would goIf I knew from the startWhy am I falling apart?Wasn't it goodWasn't he fineIsn't it madnessHe won't be mine? But in the end he needs a little bitMore than me, more security (He needs his fantasy and freedom)I know him so wellIt took time to understand himI know him so well
The Deal
>From the Musical Chess
-The American
Communist, democrat
An intriguing collusion
Fair exchange - tit for tat
Comradeship in profusion
And the appeal, partner
Of this deal, partner
Is we all stand to win
You and me, the lady also
Don't break her heart, partner
Just be smart, partner
Let her think that her past
Is as pure as snow in Moscow
Thank God we're so civilised
And our word can be our bond
We can turn this into friendship for life
And beyond
-The Russian
Refugee, total shit
Is how I've always seen us
Not a help you'll admit
To agreement between us
There's no deal, partner
Who's your real partner?
Could there be just a chance
That you've got some heavy clients?
-The American (+ voice of Molokov)
That's not true, partner
How could you, partner
Think I'd want to pursuse
Any deal but our alliance?
-(on his own)
How can you only think
Of your selfish ambition
And not of her position
Or you'd rather perhaps
See her world collapse
For a tinpot competition
-The Russian
There's no deal!
-The American
Silly boy, woman who
He should not have let walk out
There's no hitch that we two
Can't untangle or talk out
And the appeal, partner
Of this deal, partner
Is we both stand to win
We'll bring back the golden era
Stick with me, honey
Leave him be, honey
In return I know who'll
Tell you all they know in Moscow
-Florence
Are you sick? Are you mad?
You still don't understand
Why I loathe you, why I left you
-Florence and the Russian
Who'd ever think it
Such a squalid little ending
Watching him descending
Just as far as he can go
I'm learning things I didn't want to know
Who'd ever guess it
This would be the situation
One more complication
Should be neither here nor there
I wish I had it in me not to care
-The Russian
Let him spill out his hate
Till he knows he's deserted
There's no point wasting time
Pity the Child
>From the Musical Chess
When I was nine I learned survival
Taught myself not to care
I was my single good companion
Taking my comfort there
Up in my room I planned my conquests
On my own, never asked for a helping hand
No one would understand
I never asked the pair who fought below
Just in case they said no
Pity the child who has ambition
Knows what he wants to do
Knows that he'll never fit the system
Others expect him to
Pity the child who knew his parents
Saw their faults, saw their love die before his eyes
Pity the child that wise
He never asked, did I cause your distress?
Just in case they said yes
When I was twelve my father moved out
Left with a whimper not with a shout
I didn't miss him, he made it perfectly clear
I was a fool, and probably queer
Fool that I was, I thought this would bring
Those he had left closer together
She made her move the moment he crawled away
I was the last the woman told
She never let her bed get cold
Someone moved in, I shut my door
Someone to treat her just the same way as before
I took the road of least resistance
I had my game to play
I had the skill, and more - the hunger
Easy to get away
Pity the child with no such weapons
Do defence, no escape from the ties that bind
Always a step behind
I never called to tell her all I'd done
I was only her son
Pity the child but not forever
Not if he stays that way
He can get all he ever wanted
If he's prepared to pay
Pity instead the careless mother
What she missed, what she lost when she let me go
And I wonder, does she know
I wouldn't call, a crazy thing to do
Nobody's Side
>From the Musical Chess
-Florence
You want to lose your only friend
Well, keep it up you're doing fine
Why this humiliation?
Why treat me like a fool?
I've taken shit for seven years
And I won't take it any more
-The American
I'm only teasing Soviets
With gentle bonhomie
And you've a better reason to be anti-them than me
-Florence
There's a time and there's a place
-The American
Is this the girl who always said
She wants to know the truth?
-Florence
There's a time and there's a place
(1956, Budapest is rising
1956, Budapest is rising)
-The American
I'd have thought you'd support
Any attack on these people
(1956, Budapest is rising)
On the people who ran
Mindlessly over your childhood
Don't let them fool you
For thirty years on they're the same
(1956, Budapest is fighting
1956, Budapest is falling)
They see chess as a war
Playing with pawns just like Poland
(1956, Budapest is dying)
If you walk out on me
They will have won the first battle
Wouldn't your father
Have begged you to stay in the game
-Florence
He would, but he didn't know you
He'd loathe your behavior, and so do I
Why'd you have to do this to me?
What's going on around me
Is barely making sense
I need some explanations fast
I see my present partner
In the imperfect tense
And I don't see how we can last
I feel I need a change of cast
Maybe I'm on nobody's side
And when he gives me reasons
To justify each move
They're getting harder to believe
I know this can't continue
I've still a lot to prove
There must be more I could achive
But I don't have the nerve to leave
Everybody's playing the game
But nobody's rules are the same
Nobody's on nobody's side
Better learn to go it alone
Recognize you're out on your own
Nobody's on nobody's side
The one I should not think of
Keeps rolling through my mind
And I don't want to let that go
No lover's ever faithful
No contract truly signed
There's nothing certain left to know
And how the cracks begin to show
Never make a promise or plan
Take a little love when you can
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay too long in your bed
Never lose your heart, use your head
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never take a stranger's advice
Never let a friend fool you twice
Nobody's on nobody's side
Everybody's playing the game
But nobody's rules are the same
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never leave a moment too soon
Never waste a hot afternoon
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never stay a minute too long
Don't forget the best will go wrong
Nobody's on nobody'side
Never be the first to believe
Never be the last to deceive
Nobody's on nobody's side
Never make a promise or plan
Take a little love when you can
