Roads Untraveled Podcast - Ep.1
A road is a route, thoroughfare or way that supports travel by a means of conveyance.
For purposes of international statistical comparison, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines a road as "a line of communication (travelled way) using a stabilized base other than rails or air strips open to public traffic, primarily for the use of road motor vehicles running on their own wheels," which includes "bridges, tunnels, supporting structures, junctions, crossings, interchanges, and toll roads, but not cycle paths." In urban areas roads may diverge through a city or village and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space easement and route. Modern roads are normally smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel. Historically many roads were simply recognizable routes without any formal construction or maintenance.
In the United States, laws distinguish between public roads, which are open to public use, and private roads, which are privately controlled.
My Dying Bride are an English doom metal band formed in Bradford, England in 1990. To date, My Dying Bride have released eleven full-length studio albums, three EPs, one demo, one box set, four compilation albums, one live album, and one live CD/DVD release. Along with bands such as Anathema, Paradise Lost, and Katatonia, they are one of the forerunners of the death/doom metal genre. While bands like Paradise Lost and Katatonia have expanded their musical styles beyond doom metal, though Paradise Lost later returned to the genre, My Dying Bride has continued to play doom metal since its foundation.
My Dying Bride were formed in Bradford in the north of England in June 1990 after guitarist Andrew Craighan and drummer Rick Miah co-formed the band after they had split from Abiosis, joining vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe and guitarist Calvin Robertshaw while ending Abiosis. After six months of rehearsing, the band recorded and released their demo, Towards the Sinister, which was produced by Tim Walker of Voltage Records. Its title was taken from a line in the song "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium". The band would soon release their first single, "God Is Alone", on a small French label called Listenable. After the single had sold out almost immediately, they were picked up by Peaceville Records, and they could release their first EP, Symphonaire Infernus Et Spera Empyrium, which also featured their latest recruit, bassist Adrian Jackson. The EP was soon followed by their first full-length album, As the Flower Withers.
Chris Mann (born 1949) is an Australian-American composer, poet and performer specializing in the emerging field of compositional linguistics, coined by Kenneth Gaburo and described by Mann as "the mechanism whereby you understand what I'm thinking better than I do." He is currently based in New York City.
Mann studied Chinese and linguistics at the University of Melbourne, and his interest in language, systems, and philosophy is evident in his work. Mann founded the New Music Centre in 1972 and taught at the State College of Victoria in the mid-1970s. He then left teaching to work on research projects involving cultural ideas of information theory and has been recognized by UNESCO for his work in that field.
Mann moved to New York in the 1980s and was an associate of American composers John Cage and Kenneth Gaburo. He has performed text in collaboration with artists such as Thomas Buckner, David Dunn, Annea Lockwood, Larry Polansky, and Robert Rauschenberg.
Mann has recorded with the ensemble Machine For Making Sense with Amanda Stewart and others, Chris Mann and the Impediments (with two backup singers and Mann reading a text simultaneously while only being able to hear one another), and Chris Mann and The Use. His piece The Plato Songs, a collaboration with Holland Hopson and R. Luke DuBois, features realtime spectral analysis and parsing of the voice into multiple channels based on phonemes. Mann has also participated in the 60x60 project.
Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997), known professionally as John Denver, was an American singer/songwriter, activist, and humanitarian. After traveling and living in numerous locations while growing up in his military family, Denver began his music career in folk music groups in the late 1960s. His greatest commercial success was as a solo singer. Throughout his life Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed. He performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, his enthusiasm for music, and relationship trials. Denver's music appeared on a variety of charts including country & western, the Billboard Hot 100, and adult contemporary, in all earning him 12 gold and 4 platinum albums with his signature songs "Sunshine on My Shoulders", "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "Rocky Mountain High", "Annie's Song", and "Calypso".
Denver further starred in films and several notable television specials in the 1970s and 1980s. In the following decades he continued to record, but also focused on calling attention to environmental issues, lent his vocal support to space exploration, and testified in front of Congress to protest censorship in music. He is known for his love of the state of Colorado, which he sang about numerous times. He lived in Aspen, Colorado, for much of his life, and influenced the governor to name him Poet Laureate of the state in 1974. The Colorado state legislature also adopted "Rocky Mountain High" as one of its state songs in 2007. He was an avid pilot, and died while flying his personal aircraft at the age of 53. Denver was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the 1970s.
Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, orchestral and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse and 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands; he later switched to electric guitar.
He was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often impossible to categorize. His 1966 debut album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. His later albums shared this eclectic and experimental approach, irrespective of whether the fundamental format was one of rock, jazz or classical. His lyrics—often humorously—reflected his iconoclastic view of established social and political processes, structures and movements. He was a strident critic of mainstream education and organized religion, and a forthright and passionate advocate for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation and the abolition of censorship.
Can't anybody see? you've got a war to fight
never found our way, regardless of what they say
How can it feel this wrong?
from this moment, how can it feel this wrong?
Storm in the morning light, I feel
no more can I say, frozen to myself
I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right
and surely that ain't right
Can't anybody see? you've got a war to fight
never found our way, regardless of what they say
How can it feel this wrong?
from this moment, how can it feel this wrong?
Can't anybody see? you've got a war to fight
never found our way, regardless of what they say
How can it feel this wrong?
from this moment, how can it feel this wrong?
Disagreements ‒ they have killed the fire
Understanding ‒ forever's flown far away
Life's repressing ‒ all of my desires
Hopelessness ‒ eternally held at bay
Fading to grey
I have seen the path I need to follow
Time to energize
Today lasts only till tomorrow
And a king will rise
Bitterness ‒ so cruel it is out of my league
Loneliness ‒ I fall a thousand fathoms deep
Anger is ‒ dwelling in my restless mind
Here I stand ‒ both deaf and blind
But never I'll surrender!
Chase this rolling stone and see
Has it gathered greener moss?
One bridge lies ahead of me
Will it burn before I walk across?
I feel Like ‒ I'm walking towards the twilight now
Soothe me ‒ in my constant tiredness
Engines push me ‒ rapidly straight
Through the clouds
And erase ‒ my emptiness
Last night
Stopping by
Greeting me with an embracing bad breath
Five A.M.
you woke me out of a restless R.E.M.
I think it's time
To sober up and die
Now every little second is time
And every word seems to rhyme
I follow every word like streetlights
To make it home all right
Yeah
Now every little second just flies
I hold on to them like paradise
I follow every word like streetlights
I, I want to fall in love and leave tonight
Been riding in the sunset
Ignoring what follows after beauty
Fades to black now
Just riding in the sunset
Now this paralyzing cold
Always comes crawling back
I think it's time
To sober up and live
Now every little second is time
And every word seems to rhyme
I follow every word like streetlights
To make it home all right
Yeah
Now every little second just flies
I hold on to them like paradise
I follow every word like streetlights
I, I want to fall in love and leave tonight
Every little second is time
And every word seems to rhyme
I follow every word like streetlights
To make it home all right
Now every little second just flies
I hold on to them like pieces of paradise
I follow every word like streetlights
I call you they call you
Everyone's calling you my better half
I know you they don't do
Nobody will ever do and we don't care
I don't want to turn back the time
I don't want to follow the line
Still waiting not creating
Everything we do is better when we're two
Don't take it like I fake it
Everytime I try to say that i love you
I don't want to turn back the time
I don't want to follow the line
Because life is a road that is winding and dark
But i swear 'cross my heart so are you
Life is a road that is winding and dark
But i swear 'cross my heart so are you
Now you know it's true i believe in you
Yeah you know it's true I do care for you
I'm sorry you're sorry
But you can be sorry in a better way
It don't matter if I never
Never ever let you be the one I need
I don't want to turn back the time
I don't want to follow the line
Because life is a road that is winding and dark
But i swear 'cross my heart so are you
Because life is a road that is winding and dark
But i swear 'cross my heart so are you
So are you.....So are you......
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong
From this moment
How can it feel, this wrong
Storm.. in the morning light
I feel
No more can I say
Frozen to myself
I got nobody on my side
And surely that ain't right
And surely that ain't right
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong
From this moment
How can it feel, this wrong
How can it feel, this wrong
This moment
How can it feel, this wrong
Ohh, can't anybody see
We've got a war to fight
Never found our way
Regardless of what they say
How can it feel, this wrong
From this moment
When you wake up each mornin'
and you feel like callin'
I'll be there for you
When the road seems uncertain
And you can't stop the hurtin'
I'll be there for you
When there's no one beside you
I'll be there to guide you
Catch you each time you fall
When the stars won't shine anymore
I'll be there....
When the world is unkind
And your dreams they need more time
I'll be there for you
If the rules they keep breakin'
And the future is fadin'
I'll be there for you
The rainbow will end in the palm of your hand
Don't ever let it go
When the stars won't shine anymore
I'll be there....
Who knows where we'll go
What will tomorrow bring
When we have each other
Just hold on tight
We can touch the skies and fly......
I'll be there for you....
The rainbow will end in the palm of your hand
Don't ever let it go
When the stars won't shine anymore
I'll be there....
I'll be there....
Where you are right now
Isn't where I'm supposed to be, I know
But I entertain the thought
Promise I will make it brief and go
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'm gone
I won't stay by the side of the road
And just wait for another tomorrow
Maybe we could make it there by tonight
'Cause the road always seems too long
And the right turns sometimes feel wrong
But don't stop this time, this time
Everyone I pass
Feels the same way on a different street
Fall asleep for days
It's not envy if it's just a dream
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'm gone
I won't stay by the side of the road
And just wait for another tomorrow
Maybe we could make it there by tonight
'Cause the road always seems too long
And the right turns sometimes feel wrong
But don't stop this time
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'm gone
I'm gone
We're gone
I won't stay by the road
And wait for tomorrow
Maybe we could make it there by tonight
'Cause the road always seems too long
And the right turns sometimes feel wrong
The voice of loss is sighing through the rain
And as I turn around
Nothing is to be found
For hours now upon this endless road
Is it taking me
Where I long to be?
Alone
A soaring hope is reeling in my head
I can’t remember this
But it must be what I miss
Suddenly I find I’m standing still
Staring at the ground
There’s a light in the kitchen, somebody’s home
A woman is sleeping, a man sits alone
Alone, all alone.
Then comes the dawning
Then comes the morn
The woman is yawning
And daylight is born.
The roar of an engine
The coffee pot perks
Then off to the office to a room full of jerks
Again, once again
(Chorus)
I don’t know where I’m going but I’ll get there.
Sometimes I’m wondering where will it be?
On the Riviera
A man was painting Greece
The image that he captured- Hercules and the golden fleece
Again, once again
Evening came and found him
His paintings looking fine
He put away his brushes
And went out for some wine
Again, once again
Having met a woman
They went out for some air
He loved her like his paintings
And he wondered if she cared
Did she care?
(Chorus)
Now there is a farmer
With calloused hands and feet
The wagon wheel is busted
The kids have yet to eat, again
Once again.
They gathered at the table
With loving in their eyes
He looked at them contently
He looked at them he looked at them he looked at them
He looked at them with pride
Once again
And when the meal was over
He kissed them all goodnight
And sat down by the fire feeling everything was right
All right, once again
(Chorus)
This is a song about lifestyles
Decisions that we make
Roads that we abandon
And others that we take
Roads
Nameless roads
Where you takin' me to
Now we're movin' into country
These boots ain't traveled through
And I'm losing all my heart
By going on
But the point of no returning
Is long gone
Roads
Hungry roads
Something feels mighty wrong
First you came to own my body
Now you're out to get my soul
And I can't tell which is you
And which is me
And I only have the hope of feeling free
Everybody's calling out directions
Telling me which way I oughta go
Now I never had a mind
That took too kindly to direction
But lately I don't know
I just don't know
Roads
Lonesome roads
Are you anywhere bound
Does a man have to admit he's lost
Before he can be found
When the miles keep rolling by
And he's scared and he don't know why
Does he come right out and shout
I need a friend
Or does he let his roads
Just take him to the end
These roads were long, they’ve lead to dead ends.
The trials were hard and now we are not friends.
The hardest part, the hardest part?
Now we don’t talk, now we don’t write
and that's the part that I don’t like.
It’s for the best, I guess it’s for the best.
I’ll cut off my tongue to spite my mouth,
not talking getting much easier now.
We don’t talk as we...we have nothing left to say.
We had some good times but there’s been better days,
We’ve had problems we’ve solved in better ways.
Another empty song of how it all went wrong?
So I broke my fingers to spite my brain.
The words I typed always came out the same.
I’ll cut off my tongue to spite my mouth,
not talking getting much easier now.
We don’t talk as we...we have nothing left to say.
Please forgive me all my wrongs.
I’m only learning, yeah I’m only learning.
When you speak, you speak in tongues.
My ears burning, my ears are burning.
So I’m walking in circles, trying to find my way.
I’ll stop and bury my head, this is my resting place.
We all deal with problems in many different ways.
We all feel like this but don’t know what to say.
Pretty much useless, tired of my own excuses.
I’ll cut off my tongue to spite my mouth,
not talking’s that much easier now.
Slow cold and somber
Brushing the shores
Morning never comes
I turn into a prey
Fear thy dawning lights
Hear them drown
I've been calling for so long
In a wind of clay
Just like the smoke
I'm led away
Feeding frostbitten roads
Might heal a pain
No one hears
Just raven words
One might hear the rain
