Cuba's war on Ebola

Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported: "In the medical response to Ebola, Cuba is punching far above its weight." While the world stood accused of "dragging its feet" following the onset of the epidemic, the Post noted, the diminutive island had "emerged as a crucial provider of medical expertise in the West African nations hit by Ebola". One hundred and sixty five health care professionals had already been dispatched to Sierra Leone - the largest team thus far sent by a foreign nation - and nearly 300 additional doctors and nurses were being trained for deployment to Liberia and Guinea. Cuba's...

Cuba sends 300 more doctors to fight Ebola

Cuba sends 300 more doctors to fight Ebola
Cuba says it will send nearly 300 more doctors and nurses to West Africa to help fight the Ebola epidemic. The Cubans will work in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, Regla Angulo, head of the Cuban medical relief agency, said in a statement on Friday. The announcement means that up to 461 Cuban medical personnel would have been sent to help address the epidemic spreading across West Africa. Angulo said the staff were currently undergoing intense training ahead of their deployment, working in a mock field hospital of the kind they expected to find in the region. Cuba's decision comes as health experts from 16 European countries urged their governments to massively scale up manpower and resources to fight the Ebola epidemic, now threatening "the entire world". European countries should urgently send trained medical staff, field laboratories, protective clothing, disinfectants and basic tools such as electricity generators, 44 public health professionals and academics wrote in The Lancet medical journal. "After months of inaction and neglect from the international community, the Ebola epidemic in West Africa has now spiralled utterly out of control," said their open letter. "Today, the virus is a threat not only to the countries where the outbreak has overwhelmed the capacity of national health systems, but also to the entire world. "We urge our governments to mobilise all possible resources to assist West Africa in dealing with this horrific epidemic." On Thursday. US President Barack Obama said the global community had not done enough to respond to the crisis. "There is still a significant gap between where we are and where we need to be," Obama said on Thursday while addressing a high-level UN meeting on Ebola. Margaret Chan, director of the World Health Organisation, addressed the Ebola meeting before Obama. Chan said the virus was "still running ahead, jumping over everything we put in place to slow it down". The American government has dispatched 3,000 US troops to Liberia to set up facilities and form training teams to help treat patients. The deadliest Ebola epidemic has infected more than 6,200 people in west Africa and killed nearly half of them since late last year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

France:
VideoID: 20140917-029 W/S European Parliament acting president and staff arrive and take their seats SOT, Lola Sánchez Caldentey, Podemos MEP (in Spanish): "[These people] don't need military support: if we take the example of Cuba they sent more than 165 doctors, highly specialised. Compare that with the United States which is preparing to send more than 3,000 troops with the excuse of supporting the construction of a medical structure, they are sending more soldiers than doctors. These people are suffering enough as it is without their region being militarised." W/S European Parliament chamber [CUTAWAY] SOT, Michèle Rivasi, Europe Écologie MEP (French): "The international community did not react quickly enough, even the WHO. They said to themselves 'we'll be able to limit the epidemic', and then it left off at a greatly increased speed. We saw that the countries were unable to respond, we are in a state of war, when we see the situation in Liberia, even the Prime Minister declares that 'my country will crumble'. There's no sanitary system left, there's no business, and there's even a looming food crisis." W/S European Parliament chamber [cutaway] SOT, Linda McAvan, Labour Party MEP (English): "Why have more people died in this epidemic than have died since the disease was first identified about 40 years ago? Why is it that vaccines and treatments have been 'looked at' for many years, but we haven't had the results we need?" W/S European Parliament chamber [cutaway] SCRIPT Members of the European Parliament debated the EU's response to the Ebola outbreak in Strasbourg on Wednesday. MEP Michèle Rivasi said that Liberia was facing a "state of war" with no sanitation system, no business, and the threat of a food crisis on the horizon. She underlined how dangerous the disease was to the countries of West Africa and bemoaned the sluggishness of the 'international community'. Podemos MEP Lola Caldentey brought up the example of Cuba, which has sent 300 doctors to the affected areas. She compared this with the USA, which announced its intention on Tuesday to send 3,000 troops to help efforts to combat the disease.
