Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc. (SPE) is the television and film production/distribution unit of Japanese multinational technology and media conglomerate Sony. Its group sales in 2010 has been reported to be of $7.2 billion.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is a member of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
On September 28, 1989, Sony Corporation obtained an option to purchase all of The Coca-Cola Company's stake (49%) in Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. (CPE; Columbia Pictures, Tri-Star Pictures, etc.) for $27 per share. The next day, Sony also announced that it reached an agreement with Guber-Peters Entertainment Company, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPEC; formerly Barris Industries, Inc.) to acquire the company for $200 million when Sony hired Peter Guber and Jon Peters to head CPE. It was all led by Norio Ohga, who was the president and CEO of Sony during that time. On October 31, 1989, Sony completed a friendly takeover bid for the rest of shares (51%) of CPE, which was a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: KPE), and acquired 99.3% of the common stocks of the company. On November 8, 1989, Sony completed the acquisition by a "short-form" merger of its wholly owned subsidiary Sony Columbia Acquisition Corporation into CPE under Delaware law. Sony also completed a tender offer for shares of common stock of the GPEC on November 6, 1989 and acquired the company on November 9, 1989. The acquisition cost Sony $4.9 billion ($3.55 billion for shares and $1.4 billion of long-term debt) and was backed (financed) by 5 major Japanese banks Mitsui, Tokyo, Fuji, Mitsubishi and Industrial Bank of Japan. The company was renamed Sony Pictures Entertainment on August 7, 1991.
Lauren Faust (c. 1975) is an American animator. She grew up in Severna Park, a suburb of Annapolis, Maryland. She studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts.
She has been a story artist since Season 3 of The Powerpuff Girls and was head writer on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. She also is the creator of the preteen girls website Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls. She received a 2008 Emmy Award for her work on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and has received a total of four Emmy nominations (two for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and two for her work on the Powerpuff Girls), and one Annie nomination for her work on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.
Most recently, she worked with Hasbro to develop the company's My Little Pony property My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Seeking to address her concerns with the franchise's sexist stereotypes and poor writing standards, Faust endeavored to create a version that had sophisticated writing with more nuanced characters. As a result, the series proved to be a major success with the young female primary audience, but it also gained a significant adult and teen male following popularly known as the "Bronies". Faust announced her decision to step down from Executive Producer to Consulting Producer on May 8, 2011 after the first season finale of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and left the show shortly thereafter.
Genndy Borisovich Tartakovsky (Russian: Геннадий Борисович Тартаковский, born January 17, 1970) is a Soviet Russian-born American television animator, director and producer. His best-known creations are Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Sym-Bionic Titan. Tartakovsky will be directing Hotel Transylvania, which will be his animated film debut. Although his Russian name Геннадий is normally transliterated as Gennady or Gennadiy, he changed its spelling to Genndy after moving from Russia to the US.
Genndy Tartakovsky was born January 17, 1970 in Moscow to Jewish parents. His father, Boris, worked as a dentist for government officials and a Russian hockey team. His mother, Miriam, was an assistant principal at a school. He also has a brother, Alexander, who is two years older and currently a computer consultant in Chicago. Before coming to the United States, his family first moved to Italy, where he lived next to a German family. There, Tartakovsky says he was first drawn to art, inspired by a neighbor's daughter. Tartakovsky later commented, "I remember, I was horrible at it. For the life of me, I couldn't draw a circle."
