Robert Olen Butler on A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain - The John Adams Institute
On May 2, 1995, The John Adams Institute hosted an evening with Robert Olen Butler. He became a writer after he had served with the U.S. Army as a linguist in Vietnam. His access to the Vietnamese language and culture led him to write a trilogy of novels about the war: The Alleys of Eden, On Distant Ground and The Deuce. Butler’s collection A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain – winner of the 1993 Pulitzer Prize – contains the experiences and memories of Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana. Hailed as funny, touching and spooky, it has been compared with Amy Tan’s work on Chinese-Americans. Butler says he expects to write a book every eighteen months for the rest of his life. “I always knew that I had a lot of books in me. I’ve had so many experiences in my life, so many places I can ...

This story gives the name to the book that has won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993, if I am not mistaken.
The tales are excellent.
This one and the next are unique in that they preset a view from the other side.
So far, the other accounts that I have read had personages that supported the South Vietnamese regime and the American intervention.
The old man who is at the center of this narrative used to be friends with the communist...

Butler, a resident of Lake Charles, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. He discusses: the pleasure of being recognized with a Pulitzer Prize; the paradox of writing fiction in isolation, but feeling connected to universal humanity; working through rejection; growing up in Granite City, Illinois, where the North meets the South; the balance of his academic family and his work in a steel mill; his time in the military during the Vietnam War as a counter-intelligence agent and translator; his move from writing plays to fiction; his time in New York working in business newspapers; his move to Louisiana to teach creative writing at McNeese State University; ...

Robert Olen Butler's "A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain" is a collection of short stories that revolves around the lives of Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana. The collection of stories offers a glimpse into the complexities of the immigrant experience and explores themes of identity, culture, displacement, and loss.
One of the central themes of the book is the struggle of the Vietnamese immigrants to adjust to their new environment while holding onto their cultural roots. The stories are narrated by different characters, each with their unique perspective on the world. Through the characters, Butler explores the tensions between the old and the new world and the clash between different cultural norms.
In the story "The Ghosts of the Purple Heart," the protagonist, Miss Noi, struggles to come to terms with the death of her son, a soldier who died during the Vietnam War. She finds comfort in her spiritual beliefs, which is a significant part of her cultural heritage. However, her American husband cannot understand her attachment to the spirits of her ancestors, which causes a rift in their relationship. This story highlights the cultural differences between the characters and their inability to connect on a deeper level.
Another theme that is explored in the book is the impact of war and displacement on individuals and families. The characters in the stories have all experienced the trauma of war and the pain of displacement. They are forced to leave their homes, families, and cultural traditions behind to start a new life in a foreign country. The stories show the profound psychological and emotional scars that war and displacement leave on individuals and the long-term impact it has on their lives.
In "Love," the protagonist, a Vietnamese woman named Miss Huong, struggles to come to terms with the disappearance of her husband, who was taken away by the Viet Cong during the war. The story explores the impact of loss and grief on an individual's life and their ability to form meaningful relationships. Miss Huong is unable to move on from the past and is haunted by the memory of her husband. This story is a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the lasting impact it has on people's lives.
Butler's writing is characterized by its vivid imagery and poetic language. He uses rich sensory details to transport the reader to the world of his characters. The stories are full of sensory descriptions that bring to life the sights, smells, and sounds of Louisiana and Vietnam. Through his writing, Butler creates a sense of intimacy between the reader and the characters, allowing the reader to feel the emotions and experiences of the characters.
In conclusion, "A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain" is a poignant collection of stories that offers a unique perspective on the immigrant experience. The book explores the themes of identity, culture, displacement, and loss through the experiences of Vietnamese immigrants living in Louisiana. The stories are characterized by their vivid imagery and poetic language, which creates a powerful sense of intimacy between the reader and the characters. Butler's writing is a celebration of the human spirit and a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human heart.

I’ve had so many experiences in my life, so many places I can write about. I’m life-drunk!”

Fifty years ago he returned from the Vietnam War. Twenty-five years ago he won the Pulitzer Prize for his stories of Vietnamese immigrants in America. Through his 16 novels translated into more than 20 languages he's explored the conflict several times. But it's in his book "Perfume River" that he tackles the long shadows cast by conflict most plainly and elegantly. Robert Olen Butler talks to Eve Jackson about the scars of war, his five marriages and why it’s important to always do your best.

A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain
This story gives the name to the book that has won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993, if I am not mistaken.
The tales are excellent.
This one and the next are unique in that they preset a view from the other side.
So far, the other accounts that I have read had personages that supported the South Vietnamese regime and the American intervention.
The old man who is at the center of this narrative used to be friends with the communists.
He lives in America, where an atrocious act took place.
A Vietnamese was gunned down, while he was in his Chevrolet pick up truck, both the brand and the type of vehicle symbols of his new identity.
The reason for his murder was political.
He had said that the refugees have to accept facts and deal with the new authorities in Vietnam.
But this was anathema to the hard line wing of the community that still hoped to overthrow the commies.
The old hero of the story is worried that his own son in law and grandson might be involved in the assassination.
Although I side with the South Vietnamese and hate the communists, I strongly feel that these talibans were crazy and fighting the wrong enemy.
Salem
The title of this tale is given by a brand of cigarettes and I wonder how they allowed that, seeing as it is now forbidden to even think of smoking, never mind have a brand of killing weed advertised like this.
The Vietnamese who plays the lead role here is unique in the landscape of this Wondrous Collection.
He fights and kills Americans.
The one that we learn about was blown away by a artisanal grenade.
Made of a Coke can, with powder, metal and I don't know what else.
He threw it at the GIs feet, who must have thought for a second that it is a gift from God and he can drink it.
That is the speculation made by the man fighting for the Marxists.
A photo of his wife is discovered and the killer realized that this was a poor man, just like him.
Missing
The last of the series is about an American who stayed over in Vietnam.
He is photographed by a journalist and his picture is posted in a magazine.
The Vietnamese family that he now has is worried that he might have another family in The US.

Butler, a resident of Lake Charles, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
