Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population. War jets flew over the Syrian town of Kobani on Saturday after days of heavy air strikes by U.S. warplanes, which slowed an advance by Islamic State militants against Kurdish forces defending the border town. The tempo of U.S.-led air strikes has increased dramatically, with a U.S. fighter craft launching six air strikes on Islamic State positions near Kobani on Friday, the U.S military said. More Islamic State targets were hit in the same area on Wednesday and Thursday after U.S. fighter and bomber planes carried out 14 raids against the militant group. Turkish and U.S. officials said last week that Islamic State was on the verge of taking Kobani from its heavily outgunned Kurdish defenders, after seizing strategic points deep inside the town. The four-week Islamic State assault has been seen as a test of U.S. President Barack Obama's air strike strategy, and Kurdish leaders say the town cannot survive without arms and ammunition reaching the defenders, something neighboring Turkey has so far refused to allow. Islamic State has been keen to take the town to consolidate its position in northern Syria after seizing large amounts of territory in the country and in Iraq. A defeat in Kobani would be a major setback for the Islamists and a boost for Obama.

The US general overseeing the campaign against ISIL says eliminating the militants will take time. General Lloyd Austin said he is focusing the US air attacks on the Takfiris’ resources to further degrade the terrorists’ ability to sustain themselves and resupply militants in the field. Austin cautioned against expecting fast victories, adding he had no way of predicting how long it would take to build a strong Iraqi army and viable opposition ground force in Syria to confront ISIL. Ten weeks has passed since the US announced its war against the extremists. Now, the Pentagon is saying it is in it for the long haul. Ancient Indonesian Cave Paintings Rewrite History Of Human Art

Ancient Indonesian Cave Paintings Rewrite History Of Human Art Prehistoric paintings at least 40000 years old that depict animals including one known as a "pig deer" and the outline of human hands in seven caves on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are rewriting the history of art. Scientists said on Wednesday they used a highly precise method to determine the antiquity of the paintings. They found the artwork was comparable in age to the oldest known rock art from Europe, long thought to be the cradle of the early human cultural achievement embodied by cave painting. "It was previously thought that Western Europe was the centerpiece of a symbolic explosion in early human artistic activity such as cave painting and other forms of image making, including figurative art, around 40000 years ago," said dating expert Maxime Aubert of Australia's Griffith University. The fact that people in Sulawesi were doing the same things as contemporaries in Europe indicates cave art may have emerged independently at about the same time around the world, including Europe and Southeast Asia, added archeologist Thomas Sutikna of Australia's University of Wollongong. "Rock art is one of the indicators of an abstract mind of the past human, the onset of what we might consider to be one of the hallmarks of 'modern' humans," Sutikna added. The study focused on 14 cave paintings 12 human hand stencils and two naturalistic animal depictions, one showing an animal called a babirusa, or "pig deer," and the other showing what probably is a pig. They were painted in limestone caves near Maros in southern Sulawesi, a large island east of Borneo. Most of the artwork was created with a pigment called red ochre to produce red and mulberry colored paintings. The art's existence had been known for decades, but its age had never been determined. Some experts estimated it was maybe 10000 years old. The scientists used a method based on the radioactive decay of tiny quantities of uranium in small mineral growths dubbed "cave popcorn" that formed on some of the paintings. The Nigerian government and the Islamic militant group Boko Haram may have finally reached a cease fire agreement that includes the return of the abducted girls. It’s been six months since Boko Haram militants abducted 276 girls from the Nigerian village of Chibok. Nigerian presidential aide Hassan Tukur, who previously negotiated with Boko Haram in Chad said on Friday that Nigeria has agreed to a ceasefire with the Islamic militant group who are still holding 200 of the girls hostage. "Boko Haram issued the ceasefire as a result of the discussions we have been having with them," Turkur told BBC Focus on Africa. "They have agreed to release the Chibok girls." The release would be celebrated by Nigerian people but some have their doubts on the credibility of Boko Haram’s representative Danladi Ahmadu. “I have never heard of such a man,” Shehu Sani who has led previous negotiations with Boko Haram told AFP. “If a ceasefire were to come, it would come from the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau. Ahmadu claims to be Bolko Haram’s Saudi Arabia-based secretary general but admitted that he’s never met Shekau. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. UN Membership Fills 5 Security Council Seats
UN Membership Fills 5 Security Council Seats
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:55
  • Updated: 17 Oct 2014
U.N. member states elected five countries to the Security Council on Thursday, each for a two-year term. Angola, Venezuela and Malaysia were put forth by their regional groups and ran uncontested, easily achieving more than the two-thirds majority of votes needed to validate their victories. The only suspense in Thursday’s ballot was in the group known as “Western Europe and Others”. WEOG, as it is known, is not a strictly regional group as it includes far-flung members such as Britain, Canada, Australia and Israel. In that group Turkey, Spain and New Zealand vied for only two available council seats. New Zealand captured a two-thirds majority in the first round, but Spain and Turkey had to go through two more rounds of ballots before Spain prevailed. Speaking after the results, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Anifah Aman noted that this year has been a difficult one for his nation following two airliner crashes. “Malaysians from all walks of life have come together, to stand together and unite behind the nation. It is my hope that Malaysia’s election to U.N. Security Council will similarly unite all Malaysians, particularly as we pursue interests in the realm of international peace and security as a member of the Security Council," said Aman. Analyst and Executive Editor of Independent Diplomat Carne Ross tells VOA he expects Venezuela will probably echo its foreign policy opinions inside the council. “Of course a recurring theme is hostility to the United States and its interference, as they see it, in Latin America," said Ross. Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Rafael Ramirez appeared to seize on that right away, saying his country had won its seat despite a “maligned campaign” against his country and would seek to defend developing countries from its seat on the council. “We take up this challenge, determined to continue our fight against the willingness to subject countries to the subjugation, domination, exploitation and foreign occupation and the denial of fundamental human rights," said Ramirez. In a statement, U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power expressed disappointment that Venezuela was put forward by Latin American and Caribbean countries as their nominee. She said council candidates should support the principles of the U.N. Charter, including promoting universal respect for human rights. She noted that Venezuela has failed to do this and that the United States would continue to call upon Venezuela to respect the fundamental freedoms and universal human rights of its people. Countries normally begin their campaigns for council seats years in advance. In the run up to Thursday’s vote there were parties and small souvenirs - such as Turkish delight, New Zealand licorice and Venezuelan chocolates - to sweeten voters’ moods. The winners will take their seats on the 15-nation council January 1 and replace outgoing members Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, South Korea and Rwanda.

Special Report: Spread Of Ebola In West Africa
12:05

President Barack Obama\'s air strike strategy, and Kurdish leaders say the town cannot survive without arms and ammunition reaching the defenders, something neighboring Turkey has so far refused to allow.

Brazilian security guard Thiago Henrique Gomes da Rocha has Confessed 39 Murders
“We have been shocked by his coldness,” said a police official

A 26-year-old Brazilian man who allegedly killed at least 39 people in the span of three years has been taken into custody by local authorities.

Security guard Thiago Henrique Gomes da Rocha confessed to the murders after being arrested in the central city of Goiania, the BBC reports.

“We have been shocked by his coldness,” a police official who witnessed his interrogation told Brazilian television, saying that Gomes da Rocha referred to his victims by numbers one to 39.

He reportedly targeted women, homeless people and homosexuals, going up to his victims on a motorcycle with his face covered. He would then shoot them and leave without taking any of their possessions, although police said he would often demand valuables.

Other than the killings, he is also suspected of carrying out over 90 robberies.

U.N. member states elected five countries to the Security Council on Thursday, each for a two-year term.

Security Council will similarly unite all Malaysians, particularly as we pursue interests in the realm of international peace and security as a member of the Security Council,\
