A semi-arid climate or steppe climate describes climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually being dominated by either grasses or shrubs.
To determine if a location has a semi-arid climate, the precipitation threshold must first be determined. Finding the precipitation threshold (in millimeters) involves first multiplying the average annual temperature in °C by 20, then adding 280 if 70% or more of the total precipitation is in the high-sun half of the year (April through September in the Northern Hemisphere, or October through March in the Southern), or 140 if 30%–70% of the total precipitation is received during the applicable period, or 0 if less than 30% of the total precipitation is so received. If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate).
According to the 2009 Kenyan census, Turkana number 855,399, or 2.5% of the Kenyan population, making Turkana the third largest Nilotic ethnic group in Kenya, after the Kalenjin and the Luo, slightly more numerous than the Maasai, and the tenth largest ethnicity in all of Kenya. Although this figure was initially controversial and rejected as too large by Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, a court ruling (Feb 7, 2012) by Justice Mohammed Warsame stated that the Kenyan government accepts the 2009 census figures for Turkana.
The language of the Turkana, an Eastern Nilotic language, is also called Turkana; their own name for it is ŋaTurkana or aŋajep a ŋaTurkana.
The Turkana people call themselves ŋiTurkana (The Turkana). The name means the people of Turkan. They are mainly semi-nomadic pastoralists.

A semi-arid climate or steppe climate are climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually dominated by either grasses or shrubs.
If the area's annual precipitation is less than the threshold but more than half the threshold, it is classified as a BS (steppe climate).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert
A desert is a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. About one third of the land surface of the world is arid or semi-arid. This includes much of the polar regions where little precipitation occurs and which are sometimes called "cold deserts". Deserts can be classified by the amount of precipitation that falls, by the temperature that prevails, by the causes of desertification or by their geographical location.
Deserts are formed by weathering processes as large variations in temperature between day and night put strains on the rocks which consequently break in pieces. Although rain seldom occurs in deserts, there are occasional downpours...
Plants and animals living in the desert need special adaptations to survive in the harsh environment. Plants tend to be tough and wiry with small or no leaves, water-resistant cuticles and often spines to deter herbivory. Some annual plants germinate, bloom and die in the course of a few weeks after rainfall while other long-lived plants survive for years and have deep root systems able to tap underground moisture. Animals need to keep cool and find enough food and water to survive. Many are nocturnal and stay in the shade or underground during the heat of the day. They tend to be efficient at conserving water, extracting most of their needs from their food and concentrating their urine. Some animals remain in a state of dormancy for long periods, ready to become active again when the rare rains fall. They then reproduce rapidly while conditions are favorable before returning to dormancy.
People have struggled to live in deserts and the surrounding semi-arid lands for millennia. Nomads have moved their flocks and herds to wherever grazing is available and oases have provided opportunities for a more settled way of life. The cultivation of semi-arid regions encourages erosion of soil and is one of the causes of increased desertification. Desert farming is possible with the aid of irrigation and the Imperial Valley in California provides an example of how previously barren land can be made productive by the import of water from an outside source. Many trade routes have been forged across deserts, especially across the Sahara Desert, and traditionally were used by caravans of camels carrying salt, gold, ivory and other goods. Large numbers of slaves were also taken northwards across the Sahara. Some mineral extraction also takes place in deserts and the uninterrupted sunlight gives potential for the capture of large quantities of solar energy...

The unit's historical lineage goes back to the 336th Bombardment Group which was a World War II United States Army Air Forces training organization. It served in the United States during World War II...
Overview
The 336th TG operates the U.S. Air Force Survival School. The school provides instruction in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training primarily to aircrew members. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert

Zoo Crafting: Side Quest! Roar of the Lion River!!
We are back in the Safari Zone for a special Side Quest - it is time to work on expanding Lion River! While we work we discuss the way that termite mounds can help prevent desertification in semi-arid landscapes and mull over what future additions to add to our Safari Zone! Also we adopt a brave chicken named Little Lion!
Welcome to the zoo! From humble beginnings we're going to build a zoo for the ages, complete with beautiful habitats for our animals, fountains and statues to decorate the zoo, museums, research centers, and even ice cream stands! Not to mention there is a whole world full of mysterious ruins and surprises to explore!

Drylands around North Africa and the Arabian peninsula are the main terrestrial sources of airborne dust. Also with some contributions from Iran, Pakistan and India into the Arabian Sea, and China's significant storms deposit dust in the Pacific. It has been argued that recently, poor management of the Earth's drylands, such as neglecting the fallow system, are increasing dust storms size and frequency from desert margins and changing both the local and global climate, and also impacting local economies.
The term sandstorm is used most often in the context of desert sandstorms, especially in the Sahara Desert, or places where sand is a more prevalent soil type than dirt or rock, when, in addition to fine particles obscuring visibility, a considerable amount of larger sand particles are blown closer to the surface. The term dust storm is more likely to be used when finer particles are blown long distances, especially when the dust storm affects urban areas.

Semi-arid climate
A semi-arid climate or steppe climate are climatic regions that receive precipitation below potential evapotranspiration, but not extremely. A more precise definition is given by the Köppen climate classification that treats steppe climates (BSk and BSh) as intermediates between desert climates (BW) and humid climates in ecological characteristics and agricultural potential. Semi-arid climates tend to support short or scrubby vegetation, with semi-arid areas usually dominated by either grasses or shrubs.

Kiambu Food Security: Govt starting food programme in Kiambu's semi arid areas
The Ministry of Agriculture is embarking on 3-year food programme in semi arid areas of Kiambu County, to increase food security, the agriculture cabinet secretary Felix Koskei has announced. Speaking in Limuru and Kikuyu respectively, Koskei said the population of Ndeiya, Karai and Nachu areas has over the years depended on food aid owing to the frequent crop failures. The programme seeks to develop an integrated and sustainable food and nutrition security model with each household receiving free seeds of drought tolerant maize and beans varieties. Demonstrations will also be carried out to enhance the farmers’ capacity in crop production through irrigation and soil conservation.

Govt launches school feeding programme for arid, semi arid areas
School pupils from arid and semi arid areas are set to benefit from a project dubbed Homegrown School Feeding Programme that was launched today in Nairobi. The aim of the project is to promote the supply of local produce to surrounding institutions of learning to feed pupils from needy regions across the country. Already 12,000 farmers from Lamu, Narok, Laikipia, Kitui, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo have been incorporated in the programme. Netherlands Development Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology support the programme. This year the government allocated 800 million shillings to school feeding programmes.

Ah, the irony. A Roundtable on the effects of our severe drought broadcasts as we take cover from a drenching rainstorm. The Kalahari Desert is a large semi-arid sandy savannah in southern Africa prolonging 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering considerably of Botswana and also parts of Namibia - formerly South West Africa - and South Africa. A semi-desert, with massive systems of exceptional grazing after great rainfalls, the Kalahari sustains a lot more animals and also plants than a true desert, such as the Namib Desert to the west. There are percentages of rainfall and also the summertime temperature level is quite high. The driest areas often receive 110-- 200 millimetres (4.3-- 7.9 in) of rainfall each year, and also the wettest merely a little over 500 millimetres (20 in). The bordering Kalahari Container covers over 2,500,000 square kilometres (970,000 sq mi) prolonging further into Botswana, Namibia and also South Africa, and also encroaching into parts of Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Kalahari is the home of many migratory birds as well as pets. Formerly havens for wild animals from elephants to giraffes, as well as for killers such as lions and cheetahs, the riverbeds are now mainly grazing areas, though leopards as well as cheetahs could still be discovered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert
