Machias Seal Island
Machias Seal Island is an island in the Gulf of Maine, about 16 km (9.9 mi) southeast from Cutler, Maine, and 19 km (11.8 mi) southwest of Southwest Head, New Brunswick on Grand Manan Island. It is a neighbour to North Rock. Sovereignty of the island is disputed; both Canada and the United States claim sovereignty. The Canadian Coast Guard continues to staff a lighthouse on the island; the first lighthouse was constructed there in 1832.
Geography
The relationship of Machias Seal Island to the Grand Manan archipelago is a source of some dispute among geologists. The island is considered to be a possible continuation of the series of exposed shoals, rocks, and islets strewn south and west of Grand Manan Island. The deeper Grand Manan Channel lies to the north and west of the island, separating it from the coast of Washington County, Maine.
Machias Seal Island is a barren island and devoid of trees. Because of its location at the boundary between the Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy, Machias Seal Island is fog-bound for many days of the year. It is also a sanctuary for seabirds such as Atlantic puffins, razorbills, common murres, common and Arctic terns, Leach's storm-petrels, and common eiders.

Island
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

Grand Manan day 3, THE PUFFINS
This is what we came here to see, the Puffins. Took us 1hr 30min by boat to get to Machias Seal island. Then we needed to go in these small little sheds with side windows to see the Puffins up close. Atlantic Puffins, Eagles, and other Seabirds - Donelda's Puffin Boat Tour - Cape Breton
On my particular trip, I saw razorbills, cormorants, bald eagles, puffins, gulls, and seals. The complete tour is around 2 1/2 hours and takes you to the bird islands, which are bird sanctuaries for all kinds of seabirds. The boat leaves from Englishtown, NS, about 20 minutes east of Baddeck. I highly recommend this tour! The entire experience is lovely. The guide is very knowledgeable about the birds, plus the Atlantic puffin is probably the cutest bird you will ever see. Be sure to bring your camera (with a zoom or a long focal length lens is a plus).

This is what we came here to see, the Puffins. Took us 1hr 30min by boat to get to Machias Seal island. Then we needed to go in these small little sheds with side windows to see the Puffins up close. We had 1hr to photograph the birds then our tour guide came to get us to head back to Grand Mana island.

The complete tour is around 2 1/2 hours and takes you to the bird islands, which are bird sanctuaries for all kinds of seabirds. The boat leaves from Englishtown, NS, about 20 minutes east of Baddeck.
I highly recommend this tour! The entire experience is lovely. The guide is very knowledgeable about the birds, plus the Atlantic puffin is probably the cutest bird you will ever see. Be sure to bring your camera (with a zoom or a long focal length lens is a plus).

An unspoiled island is a rare find But an easy ferry ride from Blacks Harbor, New Bruswick will find you just that.
The ride to and from Grand Manan is itself a treat and in the right season you can easily see whales and dolphins.
(we were there a little too early, Summer and Autumn are best)
Grand Manan island guards the southern end of the Bay of Fundy. ( It's actually parallel to the Coast of Maine, at the head of the gulf)
And it's blessedly authentic,15 miles long, 6 plus miles wide and free of tourist glitz, its an honest working island.
Dulse is grand Manan's signature crop. The nutrient rich sea weed is sought world wide as flavoring, and a perfect natural fertilizer.
Fishermen rule, patient boats await the rising tide. Remember this is the Bay of Fundy and while the tides are less extreme than those further north,
they still require absolute attention and respect! Lobster buoys and herring weirs punctuate the waters.
Swallowtail lighthouse in North Head is accessible and spectacular. You can walk right to the edge of the cliffs guided by a thin orange rope.
Clearly Canadians trust that you will not step over the edge!...and a great place to meet new friends!
It's no wonder that Grand Manan makes geologists a bit giddy,with quiet harbors on one side and hair raising cliffs on the other.
The island was apparently the epicenter of tectonic movement...well before my time.
For those who choose Grand Manan as a retreat, its laced with well marked walking paths and flower dusted meadows.(What a joy to just stretch out in
one high on a south point overlook)
Author Willa Cather found a cabin overlooking Whale Cove
to be the perfect escape from unkind critics.
And there are just enough B&Bs; like the Compass Rose to keep you well loved and coming back.

Bringing Puffins Back to Egg Rock
Recorded at the New England Aquarium: Project Puffin is the inspiring story of how a beloved seabird was restored to long-abandoned nesting colonies off the Maine coast. As a young ornithology instructor at the Hog Island Audubon Camp, Dr. Stephen W. Kress learned that puffins had nested on nearby islands until extirpated by hunters in the late 1800s. To right this environmental wrong, he resolved to bring puffins back to one such island—Eastern Egg Rock. Yet bringing the plan to reality meant convincing skeptics, finding resources and inventing restoration methods at a time when many believed in letting nature take its course.
