A court martial has sentenced 12 Nigerian soldiers fighting Islamic extremists to death by firing squad for mutiny and attempted murder of their commanding officer.
In a decision announced early Tuesday, a military tribunal found 12 soldiers guilty and five others innocent. All the accused denied the charges.
The soldiers accused their commanders of conspiring to kill fellow troopers after a convoy was ambushed May 13 on a road frequently attacked by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. They were driving from Chibok, the northeastern town from which more than 270 schoolgirls were kidnapped a month earlier.
When the soldiers' bodies were brought to northeastern Maiduguri city, the surviving soldiers revolted, throwing stones at their commanding officer and then shooting at him. The officer took refuge in an armored vehicle and was unharmed

Nigeria's military today claimed for the first time that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau was dead, saying troops had shot a lookalike who had been posing as the militant commander. Defence spokesman Chris Olukolade told reporters in Abuja that a heavily bearded Islamist fighter identified as Mohammed Bashir died during fighting in the town of Konduga, in Borno state. At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Acting President of the congress, Mr Promise Adewusi, said that such verdict was harsh, insensitive and unacceptable, as there were issues such as "unpaid allowance, poor kitting and equipping of troops leading to low morale, which should have constituted a justifying circumstance in favour of the convicted".

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the Nigerian Army to pardon 12 soldiers sentenced to death by firing squad after they were found guilty of mutiny.
At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Acting President of the congress, Mr Promise Adewusi, said that such verdict was harsh, insensitive and unacceptable, as there were issues such as "unpaid allowance, poor kitting and equipping of troops leading to low morale, which should have constituted a justifying circumstance in favour of the convicted".
He stressed that true justice should go beyond legalism to addressing the fundamental issues in any given situation.
Mr Adewusi further urged the Nigerian military authorities to commute the judgment on the 12 soldiers to a lighter sentence as doing otherwise would not restore discipline but rather sow seeds of insecurity and disloyalty amongst the soldiers.

Officials from the Nigerian city of Bama are refuting government claims that troops have recaptured the municipality from Boko Haram militants.
Muhammed Hussan, head of the Bama Development Association, told reporters on Thursday that Bama remains under Boko Haram control and residents are in dire need of help.
“We are calling on state and federal government to expedite action towards reclaiming Bama from the hands of terror," he said. "Those in captivity are under serious trauma, starvation, distress with serious degree of injuries, while on the other hand, those that have lost their lives are yet to be buried.”
Boko Haram attacked the flashpoint city in northeast Borno state early on the morning of September 1. The army said it had pushed the militants back, but residents say insurgents ultimately overpowered soldiers and took control of the area.
Speaking to reporters in the state capital, Maiduguri, some 70 kilometers northwest of Bama, Hussan said some residents drowned while fleeing across nearby rivers during the battle, while others were shot dead.
The violence has raised concerns that militants could advance on the state capital.
Despite reports earlier this week that government airstrikes had driven the militants from Bama, chairman of Borno State Committee on Displaced Persons, Alhaji Jidda Shuwa, said that does not appear to be true.
“To the best of my knowledge and from the reports I have received ... Bama appears to be still under the control of the insurgents," he said. "But I have been made to reliably understand [that] the military are pushing ahead to go and capture Bama.”
Shuwa said these reports came from 133 Bama residents who arrived Thursday. His organization estimates 7,000 displaced people from Bama have fled to the state capital since it fell, mostly on foot.
Boko Haram has been seizing control of Borno state towns since the group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, announced creation of a caliphate last month.
The group of Islamist radicals is blamed for thousands of deaths since beginning its uprising against the Nigerian government five years ago.

Nigeria's military today claimed for the first time that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau was dead, saying troops had shot a lookalike who had been posing as the militant commander. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has asked the Nigerian Army to pardon 12 soldiers sentenced to death by firing squad after they were found guilty of mutiny. At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Acting President of the congress, Mr Promise Adewusi, said that such verdict was harsh, insensitive and unacceptable, as there were issues such as "unpaid allowance, poor kitting and equipping of troops leading to low morale, which should have constituted a justifying circumstance in favour of the convicted". He stressed that true justice should go beyond legalism to addressing the fundamental issues in any given situation. Mr Adewusi further urged the Nigerian military authorities to commute the judgment on the 12 soldiers to a lighter sentence as doing otherwise would not restore discipline but rather sow seeds of insecurity and disloyalty amongst the soldiers. Bama Residents: Militants, Not Nigerian Troops, Hold City.
Officials from the Nigerian city of Bama are refuting government claims that troops have recaptured the municipality from Boko Haram militants. Muhammed Hussan, head of the Bama Development Association, told reporters on Thursday that Bama remains under Boko Haram control and residents are in dire need of help. “We are calling on state and federal government to expedite action towards reclaiming Bama from the hands of terror," he said. "Those in captivity are under serious trauma, starvation, distress with serious degree of injuries, while on the other hand, those that have lost their lives are yet to be buried.” Boko Haram attacked the flashpoint city in northeast Borno state early on the morning of September 1. The army said it had pushed the militants back, but residents say insurgents ultimately overpowered soldiers and took control of the area. Speaking to reporters in the state capital, Maiduguri, some 70 kilometers northwest of Bama, Hussan said some residents drowned while fleeing across nearby rivers during the battle, while others were shot dead. The violence has raised concerns that militants could advance on the state capital. Despite reports earlier this week that government airstrikes had driven the militants from Bama, chairman of Borno State Committee on Displaced Persons, Alhaji Jidda Shuwa, said that does not appear to be true. “To the best of my knowledge and from the reports I have received ... Bama appears to be still under the control of the insurgents," he said. "But I have been made to reliably understand [that] the military are pushing ahead to go and capture Bama.” Shuwa said these reports came from 133 Bama residents who arrived Thursday. His organization estimates 7,000 displaced people from Bama have fled to the state capital since it fell, mostly on foot. Boko Haram has been seizing control of Borno state towns since the group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, announced creation of a caliphate last month. The Nigerian Armed Forces are the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The military has active duty personnel in three armed services, totaling approximately 85,000 troops and 82,000 paramilitary personnel. Its origins lie in the elements of the Royal West African Frontier Force that became Nigerian when independence was granted in 1960. In 1956 the Nigeria Regiment of the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) was renamed the Nigerian Military Forces, RWAFF, and in April 1958 the colonial government of Nigeria took over from the British War Office control of the Nigerian Military Forces. There has been a strong military coup culture, between 1966 and 1999 10 Military Coups in Nigeria took place.
Since its creation the Nigerian military has fought in a civil war – the conflict with Biafra in 1967-70 – and sent peacekeeping forces abroad both with the United Nations and as the backbone of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It has also seized power twice at home (1966 & 1983) and today ‘has become entrenched in all facets of [Nigerian] civic and economic life,’ including manipulation of national political life – General Sani Abacha’s creation of artificial political parties – and a central role in the control and management of Nigeria’s oil wealth.

Abubakar Shekau is an Islamist leader of the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram. He served as deputy leader to the group's founder, Mohammed Yusuf, until Yusuf was killed in 2009. Nigerian authorities believed that Shekau was killed in 2009 during clashes between security forces and Boko Haram militants until July 2010 when he appeared in a video claiming leadership of the group. In the video, Shekau indicated that he had been shot in the thigh but survived the fighting.
