Before Christ was raised from the dead, it would have been possible to believe that Creation was a lost cause, that sin had so undone God's handiwork that death and horror were more powerful than life and its beauties. When the modern West abandoned its orientation in light of the Resurrection, it also became skeptical about the possibility of beauty. But the resurrection of the man Jesus Christ confirms God's love for his Creation and the order he established within it. Our present delight in the reality of beauty within Creation anticipates our future delight in the new heavens and the new earth.

Kenneth Myers
Kenneth Myers (August 10, 1896 – June 1974) was an American rower who competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics, in the 1928 Summer Olympics, and in the 1932 Summer Olympics.
In 1920 he was part of the American boat, which won the silver medal in the coxed fours event.
Eight years later he won his second silver medal, this time in the single sculls competition.
In 1932 he won the gold medal with his partner William Gilmore in the double sculls event.

C. S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University (Magdalen College), 1925–54, and Cambridge University (Magdalene College), 1954–63. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.
Lewis and fellow novelist J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends. They both served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the Inklings. According to Lewis' memoir Surprised by Joy, he was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but fell away from his faith during adolescence. Lewis returned to the Anglican Communion at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an "ordinary layman of the Church of England". His faith profoundly affected his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim.

Mars Hill Audio
Mars Hill Audio is a Christian publisher based in Charlottesville, Virginia, primarily of audio materials, most notably a bimonthly "audio magazine," the Mars Hill Audio Journal. According to the company's website, the purpose of the company is "to assist Christians who desire to move from thoughtless consumption of modern culture to a vantage point of thoughtful engagement."
Most of the published materials focus on critiques of postmodernity and modern liberal values, and how an orthodox Christian worldview applies to a wide range of modern issues such as bioethics, city planning, the media, and academics. However, the viewpoints expressed in the Journal and other materials are not necessarily politically conservative, although the leaning is often in this direction; more accurately, the focus is critical rethinking of many of the assumptions of modernity and modern ethical theory.
Publications
The Mars Hill Audio Journal, produced regularly since 1993, is a bimonthly, 90-minute "audio magazine" available on cassette tape, CD, and MP3 and is sold by subscription. Hosted by Ken Myers (formerly with National Public Radio and a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary), the Journal consists of conversations between Myers and guests, most of whom are authors of recently published books. While a majority of the guests make a Christian profession, guests are selected for the merits of their arguments and the relevance of their viewpoints to the organization's purpose. Myers also provides commentary and analysis to segue from one conversation to the next.

Before Christ was raised from the dead, it would have been possible to believe that Creation was a lost cause, that sin had so undone God's handiwork that death and horror were more powerful than life and its beauties. When the modern West abandoned its orientation in light of the Resurrection, it also became skeptical about the possibility of beauty. But the resurrection of the man Jesus Christ confirms God's love for his Creation and the order he established within it. Our present delight in the reality of beauty within Creation anticipates our future delight in the new heavens and the new earth.

New Cross at The Walmer Castle
This video is of the band New Cross who were prolific performers in several pubs in and around, funnily enough, the New Cross area of London. It was probably shot sometime around 1982 on my ancient full size VHS Fergusson Videostar portapack video recording system. Cameras in them days needed a LOT of light, and there wasn't that much of it in a pub. So the video is a bit dark and muddy, but it should bring a smile to anyone who used to see them play.

This video about the London pirate radio station, Skyline Radio, was originally shot in 1983 using a domestic VHS-C camcorder, and it was edited on a U-Matic editing suite. In 2003 it was digitally re-edited, and cleaned up. It seems amazing that it all took place nearly 30 years ago. You can see the DJs, the studios, and the transmitters.

As a part of Arts Week 2013, Ken Myers, president and executive producer of Mars Hill Audio Journal, shares how the resurrection of Christ confirms God's love for His creation and the order He established within.
Before Christ was raised from the dead, it would have been possible to believe that Creation was a lost cause, that sin had so undone God's handiwork that death and horror were more powerful than life and its beauties. When the modern West abandoned its orientation in light of the Resurrection, it also became skeptical about the possibility of beauty. But the resurrection of the man Jesus Christ confirms God's love for his Creation and the order he established within it. Our present delight in the reality of beauty within Creation anticipates our future delight in the new heavens and the new earth.

Most Christians, awash in a culture of consumerism, do well to authentically wrestle with the counter-cultural words of Christ which call for denial over satisfaction, giving over acquiring. How does your church commodify the Gospel?
The Helpful Practices

About Ken Myers
Ken Myers is the host and producer of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, a bimonthly audio magazine that examines issues in contemporary culture from a framework shaped by Christian conviction. He was formerly the editor of This World: A Journal of Religion and Public Life, executive editor of Eternity, and a producer and editor for National Public Radio.
Mr. Myers serves as an advisory editor for Christianity Today, and has authored All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes: Christians and Popular Culture, and (as editor) Aspiring to Freedom: Commentaries on John Paul II's Encyclical "The Social Concerns of the Church." He has also written for numerous periodicals, including The Wilson Quarterly, First Things, and The Washington Times. He has served on the Arts on Radio and Television Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts, and he lectures frequently at colleges, universities, and churches around the country.
