Caroline Aherne’s brother has told BBC Radio 5 live’s Emma Barnett that he thought his sister would survive cancer.
The Bafta award-winning comedian died of lung cancer in July 2016, after previously surviving eye cancer when she was a baby, and bladder cancer in her later life.
Patrick Aherne gave a rare interview to publicise the coffee morning being held in aid of Macmillan Cancer, a charity which she strongly supported.
He said the moment he was told his sister’s cancer was terminal “as the worst day of my life”.
“I never expected that to happen. I probably was being too positive, but Caroline always seemed to deal with things.”

CAROLINE AHERNE'S brother has hit out at "disgusting" accusations made by the late comedian's ex-husband Peter Hook, who claimed she abused him during their marriage.
Patrick Aherne has labelled the former New Order bassist as "an excuse of a man" after the musician made a series of shocking allegations about his time with the actress, who died from throat cancer in July.
Writing on Facebook, Patrick said: "I am so disgusted by the claims made by Peter Hook in most of the tabloids today. Hook was married to my sister over 20 years ago and they were divorced because the marriage did not work well.
"What sort of man would make these claims after the death of Caroline? Is this because she is not here to defend herself? Why did it take Hook 20 years to make these claims?"
The 60-year-old musician has detailed the dark side of their relationship in his new autobiography.
Opening up about his three years of marriage to Caroline in the mid-nineties, the Joy Division co-founder alleged that the Royle Family star would attack him with knives and bottles, and even accused her of putting out cigarettes on his arm.
Addressing his former spouse's death, Hook claimed he found it difficult to mourn because of their tumultuous past.
While some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry paid tribute to Caroline, who was 52 when she passed away, Hook said he "couldn't in all good conscience" join them.
"Yes, I loved her, yes, she could be very funny, and there were times I felt privileged to have a private audience with such a great comic talent," the rocker wrote. "But she was also a very troubled person and nowhere did that manifest itself more than in our relationship."
However, Patrick has refuted the claims and has insisted that the public do not buy his book.
Continuing his rant on the social networking site, he added: "I know the general public will now realise what type of individual Hook is and I sincerely hope that they do not waste their money on his book.
"R.I.P Caroline - the world knows you were an amazing woman. I do not think the world will be saying the same about the excuse of a man called Peter Hook."

Pat Aherne
Patrick Aherne (6 January 1901 – 30 September 1970) was an English film actor. He was the elder brother of the actor Brian Aherne. He was married to actress/comedian Renee Houston, with whom he adopted two children (Teri and Trevor) and had two children (Patrick Anthony and Alan Brian). Pat Aherne was a silent screen leading man, who was reduced to playing minor supporting roles after the transition to sound (due to hearing loss). His most notable on-screen appearances after 1930, were in Green Dolphin Street, Rocketship X-M and The Court Jester. He was a champion boxer and was in the first boxing film ever made. Pat was also a motorcycle trick rider and friend of Harley and Davidson.

CAROLINE AHERNE'S brother has hit out at "disgusting" accusations made by the late comedian's ex-husband Peter Hook, who claimed she abused him during their marriage.
Patrick Aherne has labelled the former New Order bassist as "an excuse of a man" after the musician made a series of shocking allegations about his time with the actress, who died from throat cancer in July.
Writing on Facebook, Patrick said: "I am so disgusted by the claims made by Peter Hook in most of the tabloids today. Hook was married to my sister over 20 years ago and they were divorced because the marriage did not work well.
"What sort of man would make these claims after the death of Caroline? Is this because she is not here to defend herself? Why did it take Hook 20 years to make these claims?"
The 60-year-old musician has detailed the dark side of their relationship in his new autobiography.
Opening up about his three years of marriage to Caroline in the mid-nineties, the Joy Division co-founder alleged that the Royle Family star would attack him with knives and bottles, and even accused her of putting out cigarettes on his arm.
Addressing his former spouse's death, Hook claimed he found it difficult to mourn because of their tumultuous past.
While some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry paid tribute to Caroline, who was 52 when she passed away, Hook said he "couldn't in all good conscience" join them.
"Yes, I loved her, yes, she could be very funny, and there were times I felt privileged to have a private audience with such a great comic talent," the rocker wrote. "But she was also a very troubled person and nowhere did that manifest itself more than in our relationship."
However, Patrick has refuted the claims and has insisted that the public do not buy his book.

The Saint was a radio adventure program in the United States that featured a character ("a swashbuckling, devil-may-care Robin Hood type who, in his attempt to help people, remained just one step ahead of the police and crooks—both of whom he combatted") created by author Leslie Charteris. As the program's introduction said, The Saint (the alias of Simon Templar), was "known to millions from books, magazines, and motion pictures." Several versions of the program appeared on different networks.
The Saint began its life on radio in January 1945. Most old time radio reference books list the initial broadcast date as January 6, 1945, probably because that was when the program aired in the Eastern United States. In an initial story about The Saint, however, Billboard reported, "Series tees-off over NBC January 4 on 7 Western stations, with a repeat skedded (sic) for Saturday to hit 15 Midwestern and Eastern stations at 7:30 p.m. EWT." That Saturday was January 6. The article noted the involvement of the character's creator, saying: "All scripting will be under the supervision of Charteris, who will oversee the adaptations of his published works. If any originals are to be done, he'll do them." Edgar Barrier starred, and Bromo-Seltzer was the sponsor. This version ended March 31, 1945.
The second iteration of The Saint on radio was a summer replacement for the Jack Carson Show on CBS. It began June 20, 1945, with Billboard reporting in a preview article, "There's nothing definite now, but it's expected here that if The Saint pulls an acceptable Hooperating for its 13-week spin, starting June 20, it may stay on the air permanently with Carson out ..." Despite that prediction, the program went off when its summer run ended September 12, 1945. Brian Aherne starred, and Campbell Soups was the sponsor.
The show's third version, which began July 9, 1947, was limited to CBS' West Coast network. It ended June 30, 1948. The sponsor was Lever Brothers. Vincent Price starred in this version and in most of the show's episodes in the two versions that followed.
After a year's hiatus, The Saint returned to radio July 10, 1949—this time on Mutual. An announcement in Billboard noted that the program would be sustaining (without a sponsor), but that Mutual "will use trial summer run to showcase show for fall bankrolling." The bankrolling eventually came from Ford Motor Company, and the show lasted through May 28, 1950.
The program's final run began June 11, 1950, as a summer replacement for The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. The Saint was back on its original network, NBC, for this version, which ended October 14, 1951. The show lasted longer in this version than in any other, despite a negative review of the first episode in Billboard which said much of the script was "confusing and slow-paced" and called star Vincent Price "frightfully dull."
The title role was also played briefly by Tom Conway (whose brother, George Sanders, had played Simon Templar in several films), and Barry Sullivan. Louise Arthur played Patricia Holm, Templar's assistant. Lawrence Dobkin played Louie, the cab driver. John Brown played Inspector Fernack, and Ken Christy played Hoppy, Templar's sidekick.

Caroline Aherne, one of Britain's best-loved comic actresses, has died following a long-running battle with cancer. The actress and Mrs Merton creator, who also wrote and starred in The Fast Show and The Royle Family, passed away in Manchester. In a statement her publicist Neil Reading said: "Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer. Ricky, who played Caroline’s layabout dad in The Royle Family, was left reeling after cancer claimed the comedy star at the age of just 52.
He said: “I’m so bloody shocked. She was absolutely wonderful and amazing to work for. Kind, funny, witty.
"A true professional and one of the most generous people I ever worked with.”
In an emotional interview Ricky told the Sunday Mirror that Caroline “never once complained”.The much-loved star revealed two years ago that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, having previously had bladder and eye cancer.But Ricky, 76, said: “She never talked about her health, ever. I can never ever remember her complaining.
“She must have gone through a lot but I never saw her looking unwell.“She never flagged in work and the atmosphere when she was writing and acting was brilliant.”
Telly fans across Britain joined the showbiz world in shedding a collective tear as news of Caroline’s death was announced.
Her publicist Neil Reading said in a statement: “Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.Caroline became a national treasure in the 1990s when she played the mischievous, twinkly-eyed, blue-rinse chat show host Mrs Merton.
She also starred in The Fast Show – and more recently narrated Channel 4’s hit series Gogglebox.Fiercely-private Caroline had to miss a number of episodes as she fought illness.
But Ricky, who is friends with Caroline’s older brother Patrick – who also fought cancer – believed her health had been improving.
He said: “Her death is the biggest shock in the world. It’s knocked me for six.Patrick said she was in good spirits last time we spoke. We were planning to meet in a pub in Manchester where I was doing a little talk two weeks ago, but he didn’t show up.
“Someone said: ‘Everything’s fine. He’s gone back to Spain.’ And I thought that’s good... she must be on the mend because he wouldn’t have gone away if she was ill.”
Ricky also spoke to Caroline’s fellow Royle Family creator Craig Cash just weeks ago.He said: “Craig told me ‘She’s not bad, Ricky.’ And I was so pleased. I’m a bit of a bloody weepy and I wouldn’t get in touch with her, see. I’d start crying.“So I’ve not seen her properly, other than the odd event, since we worked together. But I spoke to Craig and we were going to get together.”
Ricky wells up as he recalls their days on set in Manchester with him playing telly-watching Jim Royle and she his sofa-hogging daughter Denise.The Royle Family ran from 1998 to 2000, with specials airing from 2006 to 2012.
Recalling the time they met, Ricky said: “I was with Rita, my wife, and I’d been nominated for something at the Royal Television Society.
"There was a buffet and I went over and Caroline was in front of me. She turned round and said, ‘oh! You’re my dad aren’t you?’And I went back to my table and said to Rita: ‘That girl. She’s had too much to bloody drink, Rit. She thinks I’m her dad!’
"Next day we got a call – ‘can you go up to Granada to do a read-through?’ So I went and that was it.”
Caroline cast Ricky’s fellow ex-Brookside star Sue Johnston as her mum, Barbara.Ralf Little was her brother, Antony, and Craig Cash was her fella David.
Ricky’s fondest memory is the 1999 Christmas Special in which Denise goes into labour and Jim is left to comfort her.
Ricky said: “I think it was so special to her because she didn’t have children.And it was so special to me because my own girl, my Kate, was born on Christmas Day.
"And that’s why the tears were real. The cameraman was the son of Corrie character Stan Ogden and at the end he was crying and said: ‘That’s it. We don’t need another take.’ It just stands out in my mind.”
Caroline, who had been a smoker, fought depression and drink problems over the years.She spent time in the Priory clinic after a suicide attempt.
But Ricky’s memories are of a generous, warm-hearted and supremely talented and funny woman.
He said: “When you went to work you’d have a beautiful dressing room, with flowers, a card and message from her and a bowl of sweets.
"She really cared. She used to send out to Sainsbury’s and get me half a dozen cans of mild beer.And if they worked late, there might be 30 on the set and she would send out for 30 takeaways.
"Whatever you wanted. Every week when you finished filming there would always be a little present.
"A little bag of goodies and a Lottery ticket for everyone. It was those little things I loved her for. She was one of a kind.”

Telly star Ricky Tomlinson choked back tears as he paid a heartbreaking tribute to his beloved pal Caroline Aherne.
Ricky, who played Caroline’s layabout dad in The Royle Family, was left reeling after cancer claimed the comedy star at the age of just 52.
He said: “I’m so bloody shocked. She was absolutely wonderful and amazing to work for. Kind, funny, witty.
"A true professional and one of the most generous people I ever worked with.”
In an emotional interview Ricky told the Sunday Mirror that Caroline “never once complained”.The much-loved star revealed two years ago that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer, having previously had bladder and eye cancer.But Ricky, 76, said: “She never talked about her health, ever. I can never ever remember her complaining.
“She must have gone through a lot but I never saw her looking unwell.“She never flagged in work and the atmosphere when she was writing and acting was brilliant.”
Telly fans across Britain joined the showbiz world in shedding a collective tear as news of Caroline’s death was announced.
Her publicist Neil Reading said in a statement: “Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.Caroline became a national treasure in the 1990s when she played the mischievous, twinkly-eyed, blue-rinse chat show host Mrs Merton.
She also starred in The Fast Show – and more recently narrated Channel 4’s hit series Gogglebox.Fiercely-private Caroline had to miss a number of episodes as she fought illness.
But Ricky, who is friends with Caroline’s older brother Patrick – who also fought cancer – believed her health had been improving.
He said: “Her death is the biggest shock in the world. It’s knocked me for six.Patrick said she was in good spirits last time we spoke. We were planning to meet in a pub in Manchester where I was doing a little talk two weeks ago, but he didn’t show up.
“Someone said: ‘Everything’s fine. He’s gone back to Spain.’ And I thought that’s good... she must be on the mend because he wouldn’t have gone away if she was ill.”
Ricky also spoke to Caroline’s fellow Royle Family creator Craig Cash just weeks ago.He said: “Craig told me ‘She’s not bad, Ricky.’ And I was so pleased. I’m a bit of a bloody weepy and I wouldn’t get in touch with her, see. I’d start crying.“So I’ve not seen her properly, other than the odd event, since we worked together. But I spoke to Craig and we were going to get together.”
Ricky wells up as he recalls their days on set in Manchester with him playing telly-watching Jim Royle and she his sofa-hogging daughter Denise.The Royle Family ran from 1998 to 2000, with specials airing from 2006 to 2012.
Recalling the time they met, Ricky said: “I was with Rita, my wife, and I’d been nominated for something at the Royal Television Society.
"There was a buffet and I went over and Caroline was in front of me. She turned round and said, ‘oh! You’re my dad aren’t you?’And I went back to my table and said to Rita: ‘That girl. She’s had too much to bloody drink, Rit. She thinks I’m her dad!’
"Next day we got a call – ‘can you go up to Granada to do a read-through?’ So I went and that was it.”
Caroline cast Ricky’s fellow ex-Brookside star Sue Johnston as her mum, Barbara.Ralf Little was her brother, Antony, and Craig Cash was her fella David.
Ricky’s fondest memory is the 1999 Christmas Special in which Denise goes into labour and Jim is left to comfort her.

At dinner, Nancy overhears a man, later identified as Louis Kaufman, talking on the telephone telling someone to meet him in the basement apartment. Jeff recognizes the basement apartment as a former speakeasy and that the "monster" the housekeeper was afraid of is a turtle called "Old Hickory". Jeff and Nancy figure out that all the residents were being blackmailed by a man named Andrew Bruhl, who used to be a private investigator. Bruhl made all the people being blackmailed live in one building to keep an eye on them.
Jeff and Nancy figure out that Bruhl killed Kaufman, and that Bruhl is someone who lives in the building. The suspects are: Anne Carstairs; her husband, Scott Carstairs; Eddie Turner, the landlord; Polly Franklin, who works at a local restaurant; Lingle, another resident; and the housekeeper, Mrs. Salter.

Rosalind Russell (June 4, 1907 -- November 28, 1976) was an American actress of stage and screen,[1] perhaps best known for her role as a fast-talking newspaper reporter in the Howard Hawks screwball comedy His Girl Friday, as well as the role of Mame Dennis in the film Auntie Mame. She won all five Golden Globes for which she was nominated, and was tied with Meryl Streep for wins until 2007 when Streep was awarded a sixth. Russell won a Tony Award in 1953 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Ruth in the Broadway show Wonderful Town (a musical based on the film My Sister Eileen, in which she also starred).
Russell was known for playing character roles, exceptionally wealthy, dignified ladylike women, as well as for being one of the few actresses of her time who regularly played professional women, such as judges, reporters, and psychiatrists.[2] She had a wide career span from the 1930s to the 1970s and attributed her long career to the fact that, although usually playing classy and glamorous roles, she never became a sex symbol, not being famous for her looks.[3]
Russell continued to display her talent for comedy in the classic screwball comedy His Girl Friday (1940), directed by Howard Hawks. In the film, a reworking of Ben Hecht's story The Front Page, Russell played quick-witted ace reporter Hildy Johnson, who was also the ex-wife of her newspaper editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant).
In the 1940s, she made comedies such as The Feminine Touch (1941) and Take a Letter, Darling (1942), dramas including Sister Kenny (1946), and Mourning Becomes Electra (1947), and a murder mystery The Velvet Touch (1948).
Over the course of her career, Russell earned four Academy Award nominations for Best Actress: My Sister Eileen (1942); Sister Kenny (1946); Mourning Becomes Electra (1947); and the movie version of Auntie Mame (1958). She received a Special Academy Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, in 1972. The awarded trophy for the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is an Oscar statuette.
Russell scored a big hit on Broadway with her Tony Award-winning performance in Wonderful Town (1953), a musical version of her successful film of a decade earlier, My Sister Eileen. Russell reprised her starring role for a 1958 television special.
Perhaps her most memorable performance was in the title role of the long-running stage hit Auntie Mame and the subsequent 1958 movie version, in which she played an eccentric aunt whose orphan nephew comes to live with her. When asked which role she was most closely identified with, she replied that strangers who spotted her still called out, "Hey, Auntie Mame!" She received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play in 1957 for her performance.
