Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan or "downtown" is defined most commonly as the area delineated on the north by 14th Street, on the west by the Hudson River, on the east by the East River, and on the south by New York Harbor (also known as Upper New York Bay). When referring specifically to the lower Manhattan business district and its immediate environs, the northern border is commonly designated by thoroughfares approximately a mile-and-a-half south of 14th Street and a mile north of the island's southern tip: Chambers Street from near the Hudson east to the Brooklyn Bridge entrances and overpass. Two other major arteries are also sometimes identified as the northern border of "lower" or "downtown Manhattan": Canal Street, roughly half a mile north of Chambers Street, and 23rd Street, roughly half a mile north of 14th Street. Anchored by Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, New York City functions as the financial capital of the world and is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies.
Manhattan (/mænˈhætən/) is the most densely populated and the oldest of the five boroughs of New York City. Located primarily on the island of Manhattan at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the U.S. state of New York. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island,Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a very small area on the mainland bordering the Bronx. The original city of New York began at the southern end of Manhattan, expanded northward, and then between 1874 and 1898, annexed land from surrounding counties.
The New York County is the most densely populated county in the United States, and one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a 2010 population of 1,585,873 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.5 km2), or 69,464 residents per square mile (26,924/km²), more dense than any individual American city. It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, with a 2005 per capita income above $100,000. Manhattan is the third-largest of New York's five boroughs in population, and its smallest borough in land area.
Put your cards on the table
Gotta lay your money down
Show your heart if you're able
Gotta lay your money down
I've waited long enough
This time I'm gonna call your bluff
And see what you got
And what you been keepin' from me
Girl if you really mean it
Put your lovin' on the line
'cause if I've never seen it
How 'm I gonna know it's mine
Baby I'm through...
With nothin' but talk from you
Gotta lay your money down
All these moves you been makin'
Like a game of keep away
I've had all I'm a-takin'
It's catchin' up to you today
'cause baby I'm through...
With nothin' but talk from you
Come
Lay
Your
Money
Down
Constant
Wave
Of sound
This is not necessary
This is not ordinary
This is my last confession
This is for my own protection now
Come lay your money down
Sick of this, i'm
Sick of hurt and
Shame is such a dirty word
Strung
Out
And
Falling down
This is not necessary
This is not ordinary
This is my last confession
This is for my own protection now
Come lay your money down
Sick of this, i'm
Sick of hurt and
Shame is such a dirty word
It's a dirty word...
We have no leader now
Punch the ballot
For the talking heads they sold
Like the cars, the pills, the booze, and the soap that cleans your soul
The tv reality shows you what's a stake
So cry like you mean it till the next commercial break.
And consider yourself for the wealth and consumption.
Me you say, i'm no spectator at the revolution.
So I asked the landlady,
'Do you really think I'm crazy,
Spending my time in here,
Drinking down you watery beer ?'.
Then she said that 'Life's too short
To spend your time wrapped in worried thought.
Oh come on and drink up dear.
And lay your money down,
And lay your money down'.
But I said 'Well there must be more'
When some man said he fought in the war
For me and I was ungrateful
He said 'Gimme another drink Mable
For all those good times then'.
And Mable said 'You can say that again'.
And they did 'till they were unable.
They laid their money down,
They just laid their money down.
Come on and lay your money down
Come on and lay your money down.
Oh then in the following silence
I tried very hard to make sense.
Of the things that the man did say
When he turned and quickly walked away.
All he said was 'Time is money, Oh I've got to go now'
and I thought
'That's funny did he really risk his life for me ?'
Or just lay his money down,
Poor old man came from Mississippi
Nothin'on his mind but a cheap fifth of whiskey
Playin' his guitar, got into the city
Workin' on the streets just to make a living
Well he could sing those coffee house blues
Mississippi John made it look so easy
Cigarette behind his ear
His eye are lookin' misty
Really let go when the bottle's half empty
Singing it loud, his voice is kinda gritty
He knows he's got nothin' to prove
He spends his time playin' in the city
Won't you lay your money down
Watchful eyes for someone who will listen
Won't you lay your money down
Everybody said he'd be better off leavin'
And he knew in his heart
That he better start believing
Better use the talent
That the good lord gave him
To get out of this place
He don't need a good reason
He's giving heart and soul to you
He spends his time playin' in the city
Won't you lay your money down
Watchful eyes for someone who will listen
Won't you lay your money down
Look downtown see the man on the corner
Working so hard just get a dollar
People walk my want to call him a beggar
Don't want too much
He's just taking what they offer
Well he's playing each note for you
Well he spends his time playin' in the city
Won't you lay your money down
Watchful eyes for someone who will listen
