Gilbert O'Sullivan (born 1 December 1946) is an Irish-English singer-songwriter, best known for his early 1970s hits "Alone Again (Naturally)", "Clair" and "Get Down". The music magazine Record Mirror voted him the No. 1 UK male singer of 1972.
Worldwide he has charted 16 top 40 discs; including six number one songs, the first of which was 1970's "Nothing Rhymed" (for further information see Gilbert O'Sullivan discography). His most successful recording period was between 1970 and 1980, though he has since recorded nine studio albums up to 2011's "Gilbertville". Speaking in 2009 he said; "I write pop songs. End of story. That's all I wanted to do. That's all I want to do. And that's all I continue to want to do. I have no interest in just touring, and living in the past."
O'Sullivan was born Raymond Edward O'Sullivan in Waterford, Ireland. In 1960, aged 13, his family moved to Swindon, Wiltshire, England. He attended St Joseph's and the Swindon College of Art, where he briefly played drums in a band called Rick's Blues, founded by Rick Davies (who later founded Supertramp) and where he developed his lifelong interests in music and art. According to a 1972 interview with O'Sullivan, Davies taught him how to play both drums and piano. Other semi-professional bands he played with while at college include The Doodles and The Prefects.

one chance to show your face.
this one shot all you get.
pass by your one good thing.
lift your head back shoot and chase.
never hear you laugh like that, so full.
not since you were nine.
learn your restricted ropes.
paint a cross on your left hand.
one good thing signed away and with it your only hope.
attention focused on today.
so quiet slip behind my back.
unsettled, severing always severing old ties.
one last good-bye may last the rest of your life.
one way trip can work both ways and loose ends kept untied
make better friends.
the things you buy may someday leave you.
can you say full ride?
(Sandman)
Treat me wrong honey I don't care
You never liked much anyway
You told me meet you about half past eight
You said you'd kill me if I was late Claire
Oh Claire
You drove me up and down the street
You used me up like gasoline
I still remember everything you said
That's the reason had to say away from Claire
Oh Claire (x2)
You know what that's funny you know
I don't miss you at all not even a little you bitch
I still love ya
I still remember seeing you sleep all twisted up inside the sheets
And I still remember everything you said
Every time I hear your name Claire
Oh Claire (x2)
Dear Claire, she gets up at three
She makes some toast and a cup of tea
But she forgot and watched TV
As the water all boiled down
The place almost burned down
Dear Claire, she was a pioneer
Her sister said, she flew in WWII
She stares out the kitchen door
She says, "It looks like rain
I'm sure it's gonna rain"
The secret life of Claire
I wish I had the key
The treasures buried there
In the secret life of Claire
Dear Claire, I go and help her once a week
She tells me stories and I ask her what she needs
She told me back in '44 she slept with Eleanor
Sometimes she gets confused for all we know it's true
The secret life of Claire
I wish I had the key
The treasures buried there
In the secret life of Claire
Dear Claire, she wonders why the leaves have turned
And why the summer's been so short this year
And Claire, she asks for my name, have you been here before?
Are you someone I should know? Then perhaps you'd better go
The secret life of Claire
I wish I had the key
The treasures she could share
In the secret life of Claire
I wish that I'd been there
The secret life of Claire
Oh, how I wish I knew
And I bet she wishes too
pray to the simple machines
that do not rely on belief
the softness of steam and of gears
their energy is surely pure
the kindness of engines is not in you
claire you do it perfectly
the water is all on it's own
it goes where it wants to go
the telephone can't dry it up
and sleeplessness won't make it slow
if opposites are the best chance of hope
claire you do it perfectly
the line straight to defeat is based upon belief
that's how we are sustained
on pretty girls make graves
sweetly you punctuate weakness
claire you do it perfectly
the highway it helps to forget
the straightness it doesn't betray
it lies on in where it lies
it's courtesy is it exists
that's how we are sustained
on pretty girls make graves
the line straight to defeat is based upon belief
confirmed and catalogued
your lies
my hole in the sky
filled with sun and passion
i’m smiling and laughing, I’m smiling and laughing, I’m
smiling and laughing
and I’m restless
with high provocation
the future is crashing
I’m crying and laughing, I’m crying and laughing, I’m
crying and laughing but I’m reckless
Don't waste your life, Claire
Don't waste your life, Claire
Don't waste the things that you might do
And I love you
Don't waste your bus fare
Don't waste your bus fare
Don't waste the places you might go
And I want you
There's a cold tune
In my heart
There's a cold tune
Purify me.
Purify me Claire.
Let me see you save a mind that isn't there.
Purify me.
Clarify me, Claire.
Liquify me.
Liquify these walls.
Let me see them gushin like Niagara Falls.
Liquify me.
Vapourize me, Claire.
Purify me.
Purify me Claire.
Let me see you save a soul that is impaired.
Purify me.
Clarify me, Claire.
her dad does time for robbing banks
her shit-head boyfriend is hooked on meth
and while her bestfriend's busy getting laid
her mom took the kids and left without her
i know you're trying to keep your head up
i know you're trying to kill the pain
but you gotta stop
there's better ways (?)
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
claire
could you get better? would you get better?
i can't put you in the ground
if you hear me now, if you understand
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
she don't get (?) in her veins
cause it makes her feel (?)
she do this bullshit everyday
does she stop waking up?
you know she could've been anything
she could've literally had it all
and now she just can't stop
and now she just can't stop, so
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
claire
could you get better? would you get better?
i can't put you in the ground
if you hear me now, if you understand
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
claire
could you get better? when you get better
we could take you out
if you hear me now, if you understand
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
(whispering)
so please don't let me down
claire
i'm praying for you, i'm praying for you
so please don't let me down
claire
won't you get better? hope you get better
Claire, complicated every way but your name
Never waved the white flag in our war games
Whitecaps out there where your ashes fell might suggest
That you’ve called a truce, but it’s a storm I guess
Claire, did you see me in the paper today?
Pictured walking through a crowd around Shea
Though it shows a thousand faces, I’m the only
One with empty blue eyes where you used to be
Lost in a trance
And scared
Right there: I’m the one without you, Claire
Same old dance
With thin air
Right there: I’m the one without you, Claire.
On a constant wake, on a twitching sea,
Flood back in my memories arguing
In your shadow years, I will always be
Loyal opposition. Mess with me if you can, Claire
You were always only half aware of our friends
Not a word for things on which too much depends
But do you look down on me in the crowd at shows? You can
Spot me by these weightless arms and unheld hands
Lost in a trance
And scared
Right there: I’m the one without you, Claire
Same old dance
With thin air
