Knowing, even breathing in its very faults, I cannot help but love this city. Years ago, its feeling was perhaps best expressed by George Gershwin; but when I looked to find "New York City Music" today, I was hard pressed to find a contemporary exponent. Then one night, several months ago, in a crowded rehearsal studio in Queens, nine New Yorkers blew music at me that sent tremors up my spine by its innate power, and made very clear that I was hearing that New York City sound, circa 1972! This is not the laid-back funk from San Francisco's bay; nor the lilting rock of Nashville; very few cities (in this country) are mean enough to produce this sound, or grow this type musician. MOTHER NIGHT is the sound of New York-- a rare hybrid that sounds like a cross-pollination of the best of the Apollo with the best of Fillmore East. It is, in some respects, a street sound...a feeling I often had when I would be leaving the Fillmore at dawn after long hours of rock concerts. (I know the feeling well, having done some 800 of those shows as Fillmore East's Managing director, 1968-1971.) The city streets are loaded with the unsightly in the early morning hours.
