Columbia Records is an American recording label, under the ownership of Sony Music Entertainment. It was founded in 1887, evolving from an earlier enterprise, the American Graphophone Company—successor to the Volta Graphophone Company. Columbia is the oldest surviving brand name in recorded sound, being the second major record company to produce recorded records. Columbia Records went on to release records by an array of notable singers, instrumentalists, and bands. From 1961 to 1990, its recordings were released outside the U.S. and Canada on the CBS Records label (for Columbia Broadcasting System, its parent from 1938 to 1988) before adopting the Columbia name in most of the world. It is one of Sony Music's three flagship record labels with the others being RCA Records and Epic Records.
Until 1989, Columbia Records had no connection to Columbia Pictures, which used various other names for record labels they owned, including Colpix, Colgems, Bell and later Arista; rather, as above, it was connected to CBS, which stood for Columbia Broadcasting System, a broadcasting media company which had purchased Columbia Records in the late 1930s, and which had been co-founded in 1927 by Columbia Records itself. Though Arista was sold to BMG, it would later become a sister label to Columbia Records through the mutual connection to Sony Music; both are connected to Columbia Pictures through Sony Corporation of America, worldwide parent of both the music and motion picture arms of Sony.

A gramophone record (phonograph record in American English) or vinyl record, commonly known as a "record", is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat polyvinyl chloride (previously shellac) disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Phonograph records are generally described by their diameter in inches (12", 10", 7"), the rotational speed in rpm at which they are played (16 2⁄3, 33 1⁄3, 45, 78), and their time capacity resulting from a combination of those parameters (LP – long playing 33 1⁄3 rpm, SP – 78 rpm single, EP – 12-inch single or extended play, 33 or 45 rpm); their reproductive quality or level of fidelity (high-fidelity, orthophonic, full-range, etc.), and the number of audio channels provided (mono, stereo, quad, etc.).
The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder record, with which it had co-existed, by the 1920s. By the late 1980s, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, had gained a larger market share, and the vinyl record left the mainstream in 1991. After its fall, records continued to be manufactured and sold, and have been especially used by disc jockeys and many audiophiles for various types of music. The phonograph record has made a niche resurgence in the early 21st century – 9.2 million records were sold in the U.S. in 2014, a 260% increase since 2009. Likewise, in the UK sales have increased five-fold from 2009 to 2014.

Here is one of my favorite cylinder phonographs from my collection, a 1903 Columbia model AO Graphophone. This model featured a very ornate oak cabinet, considerable and attractive nickel plating, a long running heavy duty triple spring motor, innovative drop frame casting, no. 5 aluminum reproducer and aluminum horn and even a built in cylinder shaving assembly. All of this for $30 in 1903 which was a great value compared to Edison's Home Phonograph which featured a rather plain oak cabinet and single spring motor. Thanks as always for stopping in for a visit and I hope that you enjoy the video.

Here is my 1901 Top Wind Columbia Model AJ Graphophone playing "An Election District Parade In New York City" by the National Guard Drum And Fife Corps (interestingly the record's announcer attributes the recording to the "National Fife And Drum Corps"). The machine is the scarce, earliest style of the model AJ Graphophone and was the only top wind model ever produced by Columbia. It has a very primitive designed motor and is noisy as is expected from the earliest Columbia Disc Graphophone motors. These early Columbia motors did their best to maintain a consistent speed but as you can tell by my video the speed can vary a bit during play. It's all part of the fun of collecting very early music machines. I selected this particular 7 inch Zonophone record from my collection of early Zon...

picked this up CHEAP !! took about an hour and a half to get it running, the tonearm was frozen solid. once i got everything broken loose and running it is a decent playing and looking original Columbia phonograph. circa 1920... DON'T OVERLOOK THE JUNK !!! THEVICTROLAGUY@GMAIL.COM
This machine is the same machine Columbia has as an AU other than the Standard AA has the larger spindle. This larger spindle required the owner to buy just Standard records. 7" Standards like the ones in the video are rare. Some owners would drill the spindle hole of common 78's to fit their machine.
Here is one of my model AH Columbia Disc Graphophone phonographs from my collection in the early style fancy cabinet playing one of my favorite Billy Murray recordings on an early single sided Zonophone label record. This is one of Billy's more elusive early recordings from September 1907, "Take Me Where There's A Big Brass Band". It's a lovely waltz song written by Theodore Morse and delivered as only Billy Murray could sing it -- every word easily understood and in his own unique style. I also included just for fun some issues from my collection of the very scarce Voice Of The Victor trade journals. These magazines were only distributed to Victor Talking Machine dealers and of the relative few that were printed and distributed few have survived as they were typically read by the dea...
Columbia Grafonola victrola phonograph gramophone antique crank
Restored from a water damaged unit as seen in the video. new reproducer, doors and top. Re-stained and finished.
I've had this for a few years now and bought it for $125.00 in working condition. After a month or so of playing, I heard this LOUD noise come from it one night and later found out that the spring had come off of the piece that holds it in the motors spring drum. I sent the motor to a very nice man in Michigan and he totally rebuilt and cleaned the motor of all the old grease etc. Now it works great and has been for several years. These wind-up players always amaze me how loud they are without any electrical help at all. I usually use a soft tone needle for this, And even then it sometimes is almost too loud! If any of you could tell me the approximate year this was made I'd surely appreciate it.

This one is for all the classical music fans out there. I thought I would record my Columbia Gafonola Savoy playing the Bruch violin concerto OP.26 although I wonder if there's anyone out there who will have the time to watch it all. This is all three movements on six sides of 12" 78rpm record and is a 1948 recording of Ida Haendel (violin) with The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Rafael Kubelik. The Grafonola is c.1915 and has a 12" turntable and a large, triple spring motor. It is a table grand model in an oak case with adjustable louvres to control the volume. I appreciate that an older machine like this with a mica diaphragm is not the ideal player for this sort of performance and it struggles a little with some of the louder, full orchestra passages. All the same, I'm impressed b...

How a Columbia record is made 1928
THIS IS A TEST OF A VERY MOLDY COLOMBIA CYLINDER. I SHAVED OFF THE MOLD AND WAS CURIOUS TO SEE WHAT KIND OF RECORDING THIS WOULD MAKE. THE RECORDING IS LOUD, ONCE I HAVE THE NEW SHAVER I WILL BE ABLE TO TURN THESE OLD MOLDY CYLINDERS INTO REALLY FIRST RATE RECORDING BLANKS. THEVICTROLAGUY@GMAIL.COM
Here is a short story film "The Portable Phonograph" written by Walter Van Tilburg Clark. From 1977
A favorite toy from my childhood, found still sealed from 1967 on eBay! 50 years old, the motor didn't work well, and had an extra but unusable part. Another insomnia video, absolutely no sleep on the night of July 3-4, and I wanted to do this video for a long time.
THIS IS THE CYLINDER I SHAVED ON THE DICTAPHONE SHAVER. THESE MAKE EXCELLENT RECORDING BLANKS, IF YOU HAVE A SHAVER TO MAKE THEM WITH. THEY ARE INEXPENSIVE AND WORK REALLY WELL. THEY ARE USUALLY COVERED WITH MOLD AND CANNOT BE USED FOR ANYTHING AT ALL. THE ARE UNTITLED SO REALLY HAVE NO VALUE EVEN AS A CONVERSATION PIECE. ONCE SHAVED THEY MAKE REALLY EXCELLENT RECORDING BLANKS, AND OF COURSE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE ORIGINAL MAKES THE RECORDING MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE. THESE ARE A LOT OF FUN TO PLAY AND RECORD ON, THEY ARE QUIET, INEXPENSIVE AND AVAILABLE, ALL YOU NEED IS A SOURCE FOR MOLDY CYLINDERS AND OF COURSE THE DICTAPHONE SHAVER. THEVICTROLAGUY@GMAIL.COM

THIS IS A REAL TIME VIDEO OF WHAT IT TAKES TO CONVERT A DICTAPHONE CYLINDER INTO AN EDISON PHONOGRAPH CYLINDER. IT IS TIME CONSUMING BUT DOES ALLOW YOU TO MAKE A FIRST RATE RECORDING BLANK OUT OF THESE OLD DICTAPHONE AND EDIPHONE CYLINDERS. IT REQUIRES A SHAVING MACHINE TO DO IT WELL, AND STILL TAKES TWENTY MINUTES OR MORE TO MAKE THE MODIFICATION. THEVICTROLAGUY@GMAIL.COM
Thomas Edison registered over 1,000 patents, but his favorite invention was one of his first. Rare photographs and early recordings show how the young inventor and his team outfoxed Alexander Graham Bell. The phonograph is a device, invented in 1877, for the mechanical recording and reproduction of sound. In its later forms, it is also called a gramophone (as a trademark since 1887, as a generic name in the UK since 1910), or, since the 1940s, a record player, or, most recently, a turntable. The sound vibration waveforms are recorded as corresponding physical deviations of a spiral groove engraved, etched, incised, or impressed into the surface of a rotating cylinder or disc, called a "record". To recreate the sound, the surface is similarly rotated while a playback stylus traces the groo...
Some peppy favorites from the past played on a 1923 Brunswick Cortez
As is described in my intro in this clip, this phonograph was bought on Ebay around 6 years ago and was put together by the former owner using an Amberola1a mechanism in a reproduction Edison Opera case. The youtube subscriber Clydesight who has watched several of my videos about wind up machines made a suggestion that I make a video of it`s operation since he was curious as to how a wind up phonograph works, and his expertise is more into electronics, mainly fixing and collecting reel to reel and cassette tape recorders. It`s a bit of a long video, but I hope you like it. Grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy.

This very cool Columbia Stereo 360 was made by PYE in the UK around 1965 has arrived in my shop with a complaint that it doesn't sound good. My task is to find out why and fix it.
