Stephen Leacock was born in Swanmore[3], a village near Southampton in southern England. He was the third of the eleven children born to (Walter) Peter Leacock (b.1834), who was born and grew up at Oak Hill on the Isle of Wight, an estate that his grandfather had purchased after returning from Madeira where his family had made a fortune out of plantations and Leacock's Madeira wine, founded in 1760. Stephen's mother, Agnes, was born at Soberton, the youngest daughter by his second wife (Caroline Linton Palmer) of the Rev. Stephen Butler, of Bury Lodge, the Butler estate that overlooked the village of Hambledon, Hampshire. Stephen Butler (for whom Leacock was named), was the maternal grandson of Admiral James Richard Dacres and a brother of Sir Thomas Dacres Butler, Usher of the Black Rod. Leacock's mother was the half-sister of Major Thomas Adair Butler, who won the Victoria Cross at the siege and capture of Lucknow.
Peter's father, Thomas Murdock Leacock J.P., had already conceived plans eventually to send his son out to the colonies, but when he discovered that at age eighteen Peter had married Agnes Butler without his permission, almost immediately he shipped them out to South Africa where he had bought them a farm. The farm in South Africa failed and Stephen's parents returned to Hampshire, where he was born.[4] When Stephen was six, he came out with his family to Canada, where they settled on a farm near the village of Sutton, Ontario, and the shores of Lake Simcoe.[5] Their farm in the township of Georgina in York County was also unsuccessful, and the family was kept afloat by money sent from Leacock's paternal grandfather. His father became an alcoholic; in the fall of 1878, he travelled west to Manitoba with his brother E.P. Leacock (the subject of Stephen's book My Remarkable Uncle, published in 1942), leaving behind Agnes and the children.[6]
Stephen Leacock, always of obvious intelligence, was sent by his grandfather to the elite private school of Upper Canada College in Toronto, also attended by his older brothers, where he was top of the class and was chosen as head boy. Leacock graduated in 1887, and returned home to find that his father had returned from Manitoba. Soon after, his father left the family again and never returned.[6] There is some disagreement about what happened to Peter Leacock; some suggest that he went to live in Argentina,[7] while other sources indicate that he moved to Nova Scotia and changed his name to Lewis.[6]
In 1887, seventeen-year-old Leacock started at University College at the University of Toronto, where he was admitted to the Zeta Psi fraternity. His first year was bankrolled by a small scholarship, but Leacock found he could not return to his studies the following year because of financial difficulties. He left university to work as a teacher—an occupation he disliked immensely—at Strathroy, Uxbridge and finally in Toronto. As a teacher at Upper Canada College, his alma mater, he was able simultaneously to attend classes at the University of Toronto and, in 1891, earn his degree through part-time studies. It was during this period that his first writing was published in The Varsity, a campus newspaper.

Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. By Stephen Leacock. Full Audiobook
Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town is a collection of short stories by Canadian author Stephen Leacock. The book was first published in 1912 and is set in the fictional town of Mariposa, which is based on Leacock's own experiences living in the small town of Orillia, Ontario. The stories are humorous and satirical, and they provide a portrait of the town and its inhabitants.
The book is divided into a series of vignettes, each of which focuses on a different character or group of characters. The stories are loosely connected, and they create a picture of life in a small town in the early 20th century. The tone of the book is light and humorous, but it also contains some social commentary.
The main character of the book is the unnamed narrator, who observes the events in the town with a large degree of skepticism and bias. The characters in Mariposa interact in strange and often incongruent ways. For example, Josh Smith, the power-hungry proprietor of the Smith Hotel, is the richest man in Mariposa. After being fined by the liquor board for selling drinks after hours, Smith decides to open a French cafe to appeal to the townsfolk and appease the Licensing Commission by giving them more revenue through increased sales. Down the street, Jefferson Thorpe, the local barber, is known around town for his keen eye for investments. A decent man and a chatty barber, Thorpe talks while shaving the heads of all the men in town. During one of these chats, the narrator learns that Thorpe has recently lost a fortune on a scam mining venture.
The book is a satire on small-town life and its dramas. Many of the events that take place, while enormous in the lives of the characters, are laughably minor in the view of larger political and social problems. This strategy gives the book an absurdist, humorous tone, reflecting Leacock's own perspective on small town life and its dramas. One of these major events is the national election. Though an event of much greater significance in other parts of the country, the locals of Mariposa act as if the election were taking place in their own backyards. Considering themselves at the center of the chaos, they act accordingly with townspeople fighting each other, speeches being made, and other absurd responses to a distant problem.
The book is a classic of Canadian literature and has remained popular for its universal appeal. Many of the characters, though modeled on townspeople of Orillia, are small town archetypes. Their shortcomings and weaknesses are presented in a humorous but affectionate way. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in Canadian literature or small town life..

Text me for more info on Mexican wine and our VIP trips: (845) 800-0449
Nearly 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) are planted to grapes in Mexico. Principal white wine grapes include Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, and reds include all five Bordeaux varietals plus Nebbiolo, Grenache, Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Syrah and petite Sirah.
This is the most varied wine region in the world actually. It is home to 140 different grape varietals. There are no government restrictions like Italy, France, and Spain when it comes to the grapes you can grow in specific regions. This allows the winemakers to be extremely creative. They are making blends here that you would never see anywhere else, including in California.
This is indeed the most interesting wine region in the world. You'll find winemakers from France, Germany, Chile, Argentina, the United States, and of course Mexico.
Because of the very small production, you may not be able to find Mexican wine consistently in the United States. If you find it definitely try it!

For the band's first-ever DVD concert, fans are treated to a career-defining set with punchy performances of their hits including "Stacy's Mom," "Sink To The Bottom" and "Radiation Vibe." Having perfected the sounds of summer buzz with tight rhythms, carefree melodies and humor-laced lyrics, the indie pop quartet takes the stage in prime form, knocking out favorite after favorite.

Lyrics:
He was killed by a cellular phone explosion
They scattered his ashes across the ocean
The water was used to make baby lotion
The wheels of promotion were set into motion
But the sun still shines in the summer time
I'll be yours if you'll be mine
I tried to change, but I changed my mind
Think I'll have another glass of Mexican wine
She lived alone in a small apartment
Across the street from the health department
She left her pills in the glove compartment
That was the afternoon her heart went
And the sun still shines in the summer time
I'll be yours if you'll be mine
I tried to change, but I changed my mind
Think I'll have another glass of Mexican wine
Think I'll have another glass of Mexican wine
I used to fly for United Airlines
Then I got fired for reading High Times
My license expired in alomst no time
Now I'm retired and I think that's fine
Because the sun still shines in the summer time
I'll be yours if you'll be mine
I tried to change, but I changed my mind
Think I'll have another glass of Mexican wine
Think I'll have another glass of Mexican wine
Won't you have another glass of Mexican wine?
