The University of Szeged is one of the most distinguished universities in Hungary. The famous Open Air Plays of Szeged are one of the main attractions; which are held every summer celebrated as the Day of the city on May 21. The name Szeged might come from an old Hungarian word for corner (szeg), pointing to the turn of the river Tisza that flows through the city. Others say it derives from the Hungarian word sziget which means 'island'. Others still contend that szeg means 'dark blond' (sötétszőkés) -- a reference to the color of the water where the rivers Tisza and Maros merge. Szeged is known as the home of paprika, a spice made from dried, powdered capsicum fruits. Paprika arrived in Hungary in the second half of the 16th century as an ornamental plant. About 100 years later the plant was cultivated as a herb, and paprika as we know it. Szeged is also famous for their Szekelygulyas, a goulash made with pork, sauerkraut and sour cream. And also famous for their Halászlé, fish soup made of carp and catfish. The citizens of Szeged played an important part in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Lajos Kossuth delivered his famous speech here. Szeged was the last seat of the revolutionary government in July 1849. The Habsburg rulers punished the leaders of the town, but later Szeged began to prosper again, the railway reached it in 1854, and the town got its free royal town status back in 1860. The Szeged Symphony Orchestra (Szegedi Szimfonikus Zenekar) gives regular concerts at the Szegedi Nemzeti Színház. Szeged is situated near the southern border of Hungary, just to the south of the mouth of the Maros River, on both banks of the Tisza River. Due to the high numbers of sunstroke reported annually, Szeged is often called 'city of the sun'. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Kistelek is a town in Csongrád county, in the Southern Great Plain region of southern Hungary. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Csongrád is the name of an administrative county in southern Hungary, on the both sides of the river Tisza, on the border with Serbia and Romania. It shares borders with the Hungarian counties Bács-Kiskun, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Békés. The administrative centre of Csongrád county is Szeged. The county is also part of the Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa euroregion. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ The area of Csongrád County is flat. It has a high number of sunshine hours and excellent soil, which makes it the most important agricultural area of Hungary. Its most famous products are paprika from Szeged and onion from Makó, but grain, vegetables and fruits are also significant. Half of the onion, paprika and vegetables produced in Hungary are from Csongrád. The county is also rich in oil and natural gas. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Hungarian State Railways (Hungarian: Magyar Államvasutak or MÁV) is the Hungarian national railway company, with divisions "MÁV START Zrt." (passenger transport), "MÁV-Gépészet Zrt." (maintenance) and "MÁV-Trakció Zrt.". The "MÁV Cargo Zrt" (freight transport) is sold for ÖBB. The head office is in Budapest. In Budapest, the three main railway stations are the Eastern (Keleti), Western (Nyugati) and Southern (Déli), with other outlying stations like Kelenföld. Of the three, the Southern is the most modern but the Eastern and the Western are more decorative and architecturally interesting. Other important railway stations countrywide include Szolnok (the most important railway intersection outside Budapest), Tiszai Railway Station in Miskolc and the stations of Pécs, Győr, Debrecen, Szeged and Székesfehérvár. The only city with an underground railway system is Budapest with its Metro. In Budapest there is also a suburban rail service in and around the city, operated under the name HÉV. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ More FrontCompVidsclips are regularly added to so don't forget to Like and Subscribe! The History Of Ottoman Hungary
The History Of Ottoman Hungary
Ottoman Hungary refers to the parts of the Ottoman Empire situated in the territory of modern Hungary, in the period from 1541 to 1699. Ottoman rule covered mostly the central and southern territories of the former medieval Kingdom of Hungary as almost the entire region of the Great Hungarian Plain (except the northeastern parts) and Southern Transdanubia. By the sixteenth century, the power of the Ottoman Empire had increased gradually, as did the territory controlled by them in the Balkans, while the Kingdom of Hungary was weakened by the peasants' uprisings. Under the reign of Louis II Jagiellon (1516--1526), internal dissentions divided the nobility. Provoked into war by diplomatic insult, Suleyman the Magnificent (1520--1566) attacked the Kingdom of Hungary and captured Belgrade in 1521. He did not hesitate to launch an attack against the weakened kingdom, whose smaller, badly led army (approximately 26,000 Hungarian soldiers compared to 45,000 Ottoman soldiers) was defeated on 29 August 1526 at the Battle of Mohács. Thus he became influential in the Kingdom of Hungary, while his semi-vassal, named John I Zápolya and his enemy Ferdinand I both claimed the throne of the Kingdom. Suleyman went further and tried to crush Austrian forces, but his siege of Vienna in 1529 failed after the onset of winter forced his retreat. The title of king of Hungary was disputed between Zápolya and Ferdinand until 1540. After the seizure of Buda by the Ottomans in 1541, the West and North recognized a Habsburg as king ("Royal Hungary"), while the central and southern counties were annexed by the Ottoman Sultan and the east was ruled by the son of Zápolya under the name Eastern Hungarian Kingdom which after 1570 became the Principality of Transylvania. Whereas a great many of the 17,000 and 19,000 Ottoman soldiers in service in the Ottoman fortresses in the territory of present-day Hungary were Orthodox and Muslim Balkan Slavs. Southern Slavs were also acting as akinjis and other light troops intended for pillaging in the territory of present-day Hungary. During Ottoman administration, peace was fragile: the Habsburgs pursued plans to take the land from the Muslim control, and to promote the Counterreformation with the help of agents. Using Ottoman-controlled territory of present-day Hungary as their base, the Ottomans attempted to use this religious division of their Christian opponents in 1620, and again in 1683 with the second siege of Vienna. In these times, territory of present-day Hungary began to undergo changes due to the Ottoman occupation. Vast lands remained unpopulated and covered with woods. Flood plains became marshes. The life of the inhabitants on the Ottoman side was unsafe. Peasants fled to the woods and marshes, forming guerrilla bands, known as the Hajdú troops. An estimated 3 million Hungarians were enslaved and dispersed into the Ottoman Empire. Eventually, the territory of present-day Hungary became a drain on the Ottoman Empire, swallowing much of its revenue into the maintenance of a long chain of border forts. However, some parts of the economy flourished. In the huge unpopulated areas, townships bred cattle that were herded to south Germany and northern Italy - in some years the number of exported cattle reached 500,000 animals. Wine was traded to the Czech lands, Austria and Poland. But in the end continuous wars, Ottoman administration and Habsburg repression ruined the area. The defeat of Ottoman forces led by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha at the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683, at the hands of the combined armies of Poland and the Holy Roman Empire under John III Sobieski, was the decisive event that marked the beginning of the stagnation of the Ottoman Empire, and ultimately swung the balance of power in the region. Under the terms of the Treaty of Karlowitz, which ended the Great Turkish War in 1699, the Ottomans ceded to Habsburgs much of the territory they had previously taken from the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Following this treaty, the members of the Habsburg dynasty administered much enlarged Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary (previously they controlled only area known as "Royal Hungary"; see Kingdom of Hungary (1538--1867)). In 1540s the total of the four principal fortresses of Buda (2,965), Pest (1,481), Székesfehérvár (2,978) and Esztergom (2,775) were 10,200 troops. The number of Ottoman garrison troops stationed in Ottoman Hungary vary, but during the peak period in the mid-16th century it rose to between 20,000 and 22,000 men. As a force of occupation for a country the size of Hungary, even confined to central portions it was a rather low-profile military presence in much of the country and a relatively large proportion of it was concentrated in a few key fortresses. In 1640 when the front remained relatively quiet, 8,000 Janissary supported by an undocumented number of local recruits was sufficient to garrison the whole of the Eyalet of Budin.- published: 23 May 2014
