Dave Nonis Talks about Free Agency - Toronto Maple Leafs.
During a brief Q&A; with the Toronto Maple Leafs management on November 20th I asked the following question, "Carlyle has recently mentioned in media scrums that the team has possession issues. I know you previously dismissed the usefulness of advanced stats like Corsi and Fenwick, so does Carlyle's recent change of heart come from the top down, or are you still skeptical of these stats and if so, why?". His answer started with "I think those stats are complete horse shit" (cut off) then he elaborates from there. Posted for the audio, ignore the video.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired Randy Carlyle. Randy Carlyle posted a 91-78-19 record in parts of 4 seasons behind the bench. Randy Carlyle was a polarizing coach for the Maple Leafs. He was the first coach to bring them to the playoffs in the shortened 2013-2014 season, but this was the start of a war between traditionalists and advanced stats proponents. The team, it was said, wouldn't have made the playoffs over the course of an 82 game season and that the season was mostly smoke and mirrors. At Maple Leafs Hot Stove, we analysed the Maple Leafs' systems and exposed enormous tactical flaws with how Carlyle employed systems; 4 and 5 players were taught to be below the goal line in their own zone, points were wide open and those ensuing shots were creating 2nd and 3rd shots which turned the Maple Leafs defensive zone into a mess. The Maple Leafs can score—we know that—but the team could never settled things down in their own zone with Carlyle as the coach and surrendered what were expansion team level shots against (and for) totals. Taking over is Peter Horachek, who is a traditional coach, who teaches traditional systems. It's a wait and see proposition whether or not he will be able to get such a soft team to be harder on pucks and more committed to one on one battles?

Toronto Sun 2015-03-15David M. Nonis (born May 25, 1966 in Burnaby, British Columbia) is a former Canadian ice hockey defenceman, former general manager and executive of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks and current general manager of the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Growing up in Burnaby, B.C., Nonis played junior hockey with the Burnaby Bluehawks of the BCJHL in 1982–83. He then began collegiate hockey in the NCAA at the University of Maine, playing 153 games from 1984 through 1988. Nonis spent his final two years for the Bears as team captain, leading Maine to back-to-back NCAA championship tournaments. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988, Nonis played a year of professional hockey in Denmark and in 1989 returned to the University of Maine as an assistant coach for one season.
Nonis replaced Brian Burke as the Vancouver Canucks' general manager in 2004. Prior to being GM for the Canucks, he spent six years working closely with Burke as Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations for the franchise. In three seasons as general manager, his most significant transaction was trading for superstar goaltender Roberto Luongo from the Florida Panthers at the conclusion of his first season as GM.
