Indian teacher climbs atop 100 ft tank, sets herself on fire.
Protesting against the Punjab government in support of their demands, a teacher climbed atop a 100-foot high water tank here and tried to end her life by setting herself on fire. Kiranjeet (27), a resident of Faridkot district, suffered 90 per cent burns and her condition is stated to be critical. The incident took place near Punjab Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur's residence in Kapurthala on Sunday. Kiranjeet, along with other teachers under the aegis of the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) Union, had been protesting for a long time, demanding degrees under the Elementary Teachers' Training (ETT) after admission in the course. All these teachers have taught children up to Class VIII under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan scheme in slums and remote areas of the state for over five years. Intensifying their protest on Sunday, five teachers climbed atop the water tank around 2 pm, even as another group went towards the minister's residence to stage a demonstration. While the police stopped this group on the way, the five climbed the water tank without any disruption. "All five were carrying kerosene. After reaching on the top of the water tank, they started threatening to set themselves on fire if their demands were not met," said an eyewitness, adding that Deputy Superintendent of Police Bahadur Singh was also present at the spot but dismissed their threats as "drama". Eyewitnesses said when the DSP stopped others from reaching out to Kiranjeet after she had set herself on fire, the teachers attacked him, but he managed to escape from the spot. The protestors alleged that the teachers were only threatening to burn themselves, but the police officer's "undesirable" comments provoked Kiranjeet to take the extreme step. By the time she came down, Kiranjeet had sustained serious burns, said one of the protestors. Kiranjeet was initially rushed to the civil hospital from where she was later referred to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana. Soon after the fire incident, an angry mob rushed towards the education minister's residence, threatening to set it on fire. The police had a tough time controlling them.- published: 19 Nov 2013

Read Along "Salok Shekh Farid Ji" 1/2 with Subtitles and Meanings in English
This is a home recording of the Bani: " Salok Sekh Farid Ke" the couplets written by Shekh Farid Ji. This is a long Bani scribed on pages 1377 - 84 of Siree Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Bibi Gurdev Kaur OBE recorded it at her home, while playing the keyboard, as a dummy tape in 1995. Though the sound quality is not great, but the delivery of Saloks in Raag Bhairvi touches the core of the heart.
Some of the sloks have been added to Farid Ji's sloks by the Gurus that are meant to harmonize the importance and clarify or supplement the idea contained in the original slok. The sloks of Farid, though not linked thematically with one another, describe in general the transient nature of the world and exhort man to remain detached from its false allurements and to reflect upon the name of God which is the only lasting reality. They also lay stress on the need for the right conduct and moral awareness. The attitude towards the Divine is, throughout Farid`s compositions, that of a loving wife towards her spouse. Farid teaches man not to seek God in lonely wastes as He abides in the heart (19). Creator in the creation abides, and the creation in Him (75). From this metaphysical thought of essential oneness between the Creator Lord and Jeev Aatma (the human soul) is derived the social Ideal of universal brotherhood of man.
Baba Sheikh Farid was a Sufi saint who is considered by many to be the first major poet of the Punjabi language. He was born in the Multan district of what is today Pakistan. Later, when the Sikh holy book the Adi Granth Sahib was compiled, many of Baba Sheikh Farid's poems and couplets were included, alongside the poetry of Kabir and Ravidas.
There are 134 hymns of Sheik Farid incorporated in the Guru Granth Sahib. Many Sikh scholars ascribe them to Farid Shakarganj (1173 -- 1265) of Pak Pattan, a disciple of the Sufi Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki. The tenth in succession to his post was Shaikh Brahm (Ibrahim), also known as Farid Sani or Farid the 2nd, and it is this Farid who Guru Nanak Dev ji met on two occasions.
Baba Farid is recognised as the first major poet of the Punjabi language and in recognition of his exalted status, the district of Faridkot in Punjab, northern India is named after him. Baba ji was a Muslim with a predominantly Sufi background.
Farid ji has been honoured by the Gurus of Sikhism and his verses were collected and subsequently compiled into the Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib (normally referred to as Gurbani).

The aspirants who cannot read Punjabi can read along in Hindi and can also learn Punjabi with the help of Hindi as the captions are given in both languages. Extra diacritical marks (given in the original script for grammer and translation) that are not pronounced in reciting the Bani, are removed from Hindi script to make the reciting pure and easy for the aspirants.
