Pradhanmantri Episode 14: Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Indira Gandhi
The beginning of tensions and violence in Punjab can be traced to a time nearly six years before Operation Blue Star. But the foundations for the rift were laid nearly 11 years before it. If an exact date was to be fixed for the beginning of Violence in Punjab, then it would be 13th of April, 1978. In a scuffle between Akalis and Nirankaris, two sects in Sikhisim, 13 Akalis were killed. This incident marked the rise of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. But, prior to this incident, a resolution was adopted by the Shiromani Akali Dal in 1973. The resoloution was the Anandpur sahib Resolution, which demanded autonomy for the state of Punjab. Bhindranwale took upon himself to implement the aims of the resolution. Even though Operation Blue Star was launched by the central government to tackle Bhindranwale, and the operation ultimately led to the assassination of Indira Gandhi, it is the Congress which was responsible for bringing Bhindranwale to the forefront of Punjab politics. In the elections following the emergency, the Congress lost power in Punjab and the Akali Dal formed the government. Giani Zail Singh was a prominent leader of Punjab at that time. To counter the growing power of the Akali Dal, Zail Singh, along with Sanjay Gandhi, decided to propel a counter force. For this purpose, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was selected. But once he gained power, Bhindranwale became a force they could not control. Watch how the political power plays lead to Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Indira Gandhi, in the 14th episode of Pradhanmantri. Assassination of Indira Gandhi
Assassination of Indira Gandhi
Assassination of Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi Why was Indira Gandhi assassinated? •Sikhs were very upset that their homeland, Punjab, had been divided between India and Pakistan in the 1947 Partition of India. The Indian Punjab had been divided once more in 1966 to form the Haryana state, which was mostly dominated by Hindi-speakers. The Punjabis lost their first capital at Lahore to Pakistan in 1947; the newly-built capital at Chandigarh ended up in Haryana two decades later, and the government in Delhi decreed that Haryana and Punjab would simply have to share the city. To right these wrongs, some of Bhindranwale's followers called for an entirely new, separate Sikh nation, to be called Khalistan. •In the second, post-Emergency, period of her Prime Ministership, Indira Gandhi was preoccupied by efforts to resolve the political problems in the state of Punjab. In her attempt to crush the secessionist movement of Sikh militants, led by Jarnail Singh Bindranwale, she ordered an assault upon the holiest Sikh shrine in Amritsar, called the "Golden Temple". It is here that Bindranwale and his armed supporters had holed up, and it is from the Golden Temple that they waged their campaign of terrorism not merely against the Government, but against moderate Sikhs and Hindus. •"Operation Bluestar", waged in June 1984, led to the death of Bindranwale, and the Golden Temple was stripped clean of Sikh terrorists; however, the Golden Temple was damaged, and Mrs. Gandhi earned the undying hatred of Sikhs who bitterly resented the damage which was caused to their holy place This video is one of the videos in the series of collection- Secrets. *The images and clips for this video has been taken from public domain.- published: 18 Feb 2014

Margaret Thatcher's disgust at Sikhs-1984, funeral of Indira Gandhi
Margaret Thatcher's disgust at Sikhs-1984, funeral of Indira Gandhi
Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the ruling Conservative party responding to the questions from the press at her departure to the funeral of Mrs Indira Gandhi, the assassinated Prime Minister of India. Whilst replying to the questions posed by the press Mrs Thatcher cements the revelations of recent weeks in which countless Sikh as well as humanitarian bodies have voiced concern at the British SAS involvement in/around Operation Bluestar. This short interview shows clear evidence of ongoing correspondence with the Indian Government. Mrs Thatcher expresses her own sentiments as being synonymous to those of the Indian Government in regards to the 'disgust' of the minority community "celebrating" the death of Mrs Gandhi. The interviewer confirms if Lady Thatcher was referring to 'Sikhs in UK' to which she responds positively. This is offensive, especially to the British Sikh community who pride their contribution to Britain historically and in the present. The nation is indebted to the sacrifices of Sikhs in both World Wars as well as burdened with the guilt of bringing down the Sikh Empire, stealing its treasures and causing deceit and disunity in the harmonious state of Punjab. In perspective, Mrs Thatchers expression of disgust is totally inappropriate as it is infringing the natural reaction from any persecuted minority; it is like saying the Jews cannot breathe a happy sigh of relief at Hitler's death, or the Afghan people at the end of the Taliban Regime. Similarly, were the US responses to the death/execution of Saddam/Osama 'disgusting'? Keep in mind that just 5 months earlier Indira Gandhi had sent in tanks, armoured vehicles and over 15,000 troops to attack and massacre Sikhs at Sri Harimandir Sahib (the Golden Temple). This saw over 5,000 innocent Sikhs butchered in cold blood on the command of Indira Gandhi the great 'world leader'. Even at the time of this interview, Sikhs were being set on fire and burnt in the streets of Delhi. Sikh women were being mob raped, young children were being hacked to pieces. Nowhere in this interview does the reporter or Thatcher seem bothered by the genocide happening on the streets of Delhi ... the same Delhi that Thatcher was flying in to .. the same Delhi in which security for the world leaders had been assured by India. Whilst at the same time it gave the green light for open season on Sikhs and played out genocide. Although we do not hold an opinion on this, it is interesting that Lady Thatcher's disgust met irony when many groups of people (miners, left wing politicians) celebrated Thatcher's death across the streets of Great Britain. Rajiv Gandhi's Appeal for Peace after the Assassination of Smt Indira Gandhi, Oct 31, 1984
Indira Gandhi, India's Prime Minister, has been assassinated. She was mother not only to me but to the whole nation. She served the Indian people to the last drop of her blood. The country knows with what tireless dedication she toiled for the development of India. You all know how dear to her heart was the dream of a united, peaceful and prosperous India, an India in which all Indians, irrespective of their religion, language or political persuasion, live together as one big family in an atmosphere free from mutual rivalries and prejudices. By her untimely death her work remains unfinished. It is for us to complete this task. This is a moment of profound grief. The foremost need now is to maintain our balance. We can and must face this tragic ordeal with fortitude, courage and wisdom. We should remain calm and exercise the maximum restraint. We should not let our emotions get the better of us, because passion would cloud judgment. Nothing would hurt the soul of our beloved Indira Gandhi more than the occurrence of violence in any part of the country. It is of prime importance at this moment that every step we take is in the correct direction. Indira Gandhi is no more, but her soul lives. India lives. India is immortal. The spirit of India is immortal. I know that the nation will recognize its responsibilities and that we shall shoulder the burden heroically and with determination. The nation has placed a great responsibility on me by asking me to head the Government. I shall be able to fulfill it only with your support and cooperation. I shall value your guidance in upholding the unity, integrity and honor of the country.- published: 01 Oct 2013

How was Indira Gandhi Killed? Assasiation - Murdor
Indiara Gandhi's Murder History: At about 9:20 AM on 31 October 1984, Gandhi was on her way to be interviewed by British actor Peter Ustinov, who was filming a documentary for Irish television. She was walking through the garden of the Prime Minister's Residence at No. 1, Safdarjung Road in New Delhi towards the neighbouring 1 Akbar Road office.[1] As she passed a wicket gate guarded by Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, they opened fire. Sub-Inspector Beant Singh fired three rounds into her abdomen from his sidearm.[5] Satwant Singh then fired 30 rounds from his Sten gun into her after she had fallen to the ground.[5] After the shooting, both threw their weapons down and Beant Singh said "I have done what I had to do. You do what you want to do." In the next six minutes Tarsem Singh Jamwal and Ram Saran, soldiers in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, captured and killed Beant Singh in a separate room because Beant Singh allegedly tried to pull a gun on the officers in the room.[6] Satwant Singh was arrested by Gandhi's other bodyguards along with an accomplice trying to escape, and was seriously wounded in the attack initiated by Beant Singh.[7] Satwant Singh was hanged in 1989 with accomplice Kehar Singh.[8] Salma Sultan gave the first news of assassination of Indira Gandhi on Doordarshan's evening news on October 31,1984,more than 10 hours after she was shot.[9][10] It is alleged that R. K. Dhawan, Mrs. Gandhi's secretary, overruled intelligence and security officials who had ordered the removal of Sikh policemen, including her eventual assassins, as a security threat.[11] Perpetrators Beant Singh was one of Gandhi's favorite guards, whom she had known for ten years.[5] The other assassin, Satwant Singh, was 21 years old when the assassination occurred and had been assigned to Gandhi's guard just five months before the assassination.[5] Death Indira Gandhi's blood-stained saree and her belongings at the time of her assassination, preserved at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum in New Delhi. Indira Gandhi was brought at 9:30 AM to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS-New Delhi), where doctors operated on her. She was declared dead at 2:20 PM. The postmortem examination was conducted by a team of doctors headed by T. D. Dogra. He stated that as many as 30 bullets struck Gandhi, from two sources, a Sten gun and a pistol. The assailants had fired 33 bullets at her, of which 30 had hit; 23 had passed through her body while seven were trapped inside. Dogra extricated bullets to establish the identity of the weapons and to correlate each weapon with the bullets recovered by ballistic examination. The bullets were matched with respective weapons at CFSL Delhi. Subsequently, Dogra appeared in the court of Shri Mahesh Chandra as an expert witness (PW-5). The testimony lasted several sessions. The cross examination was conducted by Shri P. N. Lekhi, the defense counsel.[12] Her body was brought in a gun carriage through Delhi roads on the morning of 1 November to Teen Murti Bhawan where her father stayed, and where she lay in state.[1] She was cremated on 3 November, near Raj Ghat (a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi) at an area named Shakti Sthal. Aftermath Main article: 1984 anti-Sikh riots Over the next four days, thousands of Sikhs were killed in retaliatory violence. The Justice Thakkar Commission of Inquiry set up to probe Indira Gandhi's assassination recommended a separate probe for the conspiracy angle behind the assassination. The Thakkar Report stated that the "needle of suspicion"[citation needed] pointed at R.K. Dhawan for complicity in the conspiracy. Satwant Singh and conspirator Kehar Singh were sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out on 6 January 1989.- published: 02 Mar 2014
