Greensgrow stands as a testament to hard work and harder heads. What was once a dilapidated industrial site is today an active vibrant urban farm including a Farmstand, CSA and Nursery. The Greensgrow Philadelphia Project brings green ideas to life while Greensgrow Farms brings food and flowers to our neighbors.

From Brownfield to Green Block
In 1997, Founder Mary Seton Corboy and then-partner Tom Sereduk were exploring the market for an urban farm. They found a litter-strewn lot in Kensington and signed a two-year lease – choosing a livelier, more sustainable future for the abandoned brownfield that was once a steel-galvanizing factory and, today, is Greensgrow Farms.

Farming Ideas
The Greensgrow Philadelphia Project is farming more than great greens. Our nonprofit serves as an incubator for seedling initiatives, such as our Mobile Markets, SNAP box and LIFE Programs. We strengthen their roots and give them a few years to flower and reach a level of sustainability, branching out on their own and nourishing our mission.

Beautifying Our Backyard and Beyond
While the nursery at Greensgrow Farms inspires and educates with workshops and plants, the Greensgrow Philadelphia Project helps beautify the city. This year, plants from the Philadelphia Flower show were re-purposed for Earth Day; Greensgrow joined Subaru in organizing a neighborhood planting effort to brighten up the streets and build community.

Nourishing Our Neighborhood
Ever in support of social entrepreneurship, the Greensgrow Philadelphia Project helps local food entrepreneurs get their start inside our commercially licensed kitchen at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. The Greensgrow Community Kitchen also provides a space to prepare our line of prepared foods and for workshops led by local chefs.

Eat Well, Eat Local
Food is a community effort and shared responsibility. Through initiatives like our SNAP Box program and Community Garden Days we encourage everyone to eat well and invest in the local, living food economy. The face-to-face relationship we have with our farmers creates transparency, builds community and helps ensure a safe, resilient food system.

Fresh Food for Healthier Lives
To combat hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition and obesity, we started the SNAP Box initiative, which provides participating families weekly produce items that they pay for with SNAP benefits. Our goal is to ensure that all communities, regardless of income, have access to fresh food and the knowledge to prepare healthy meals at home.

Produce on Wheels
Each week, we cart fresh fare throughout Philadelphia and to our New Jersey neighbors. Since the start of our Mobile Markets, we’ve added neighborhoods and began satellite SNAP Box pick-ups – because we all have a right to access good food at a fair price, and farmers deserve to make a living.
