NICHE - Geographical information for sustainable development and food security The NICHE programme is helping to develop capacity for land management and land administration through a number of projects in Rwanda. In the predecessor programme, NPT, the National University of Rwanda was assisted in strengthening its newly established GIS Centre (CGIS). Staff members were trained through master's programmes, PhD programmes and short courses, and all necessary equipment was provided. Under NICHE, the support continues and is now focusing on utilising and sharing knowledge and facilities. The teaching and research skills of CGIS staff are being upgraded and consultancy activities are being undertaken. CGIS produces and sells maps to external clients. Another NICHE project supports the INES Institute of Applied Sciences in Northern Rwanda with the establishment of a Land Surveying Department. The curricula make a direct link between geographical data and food security and food production. While CGIS focuses on data analysis, INES gives priority to developing the practical skills of its students.
